I watched a lot of mine molt before it got too cold. I have one that was beautiful and puffy and there is an oval of feathers now missing from the front of her neck where it meets the breast. I think she is doing it herself. What could this be? She is otherwise very healthy.

There are a couple of different reasons why a chicken would pluck out her own feathers (apart from them going through the Annual Moult) the top three being stress, boredom or lack of protein - all very common around this time of year, especially with them being a Housing Order here in England. Giving them extra entertainment through hanging pecking blocks or cabbages in their run and spraying anti-feather pecking spray will help with the first two, and increasing the protein in their diet will help with the latter.

@@flytesofancy They have been on increased protein since the first sign of molt. They don't care about hanging toys or cabbages I have tried. It seems to be when they come out of the coop in the morning I notice her. Is it possible she isn't doing it but her perch mate is? Are there toxic chemicals in that spray? I raise them organic and use herbs and such around the yard and coop. Thank you for your response.

@@vickyannpaintingwithoils There is every chance that another hen is pecking her feathers out, in which case you may need to invest in a product such as Barrier Anti Feather Pecking Spray which is used in organic farming systems, so won't contain any toxic chemicals - once sprayed onto the affected area, it will make it foul tasting and should put off any birds attempting to peck at her again

Valuable information - thank you. My speckled sussex bantam lost some feathers on her back due to feather pecking/bullying 10 months ago. All bullying was stopped, happy hens now but the feathers have not grown back. Can you tell me why? Or if they ever will grow back? Thank you.
@phillipweymouth4303 жыл бұрын
Dear Michelle, It would be unusual for them to never grow back again, so I would imagine that with the next moult they will come back. If they don't, there is a chance that another bird is pulling the quills as they emerge. you could try putting a poultry saddle on her in that case. www.flytesofancy.co.uk/brown-poultry-saddles.html please let me know how it turns out. :)

Hi Phil, please suggest something for a hen with EDS symtoms and anything to make her feel better or recover

Hi Nash, are you sure that your chicken has Egg Drop Syndrome? If there any chance that she is just laying soft-shelled eggs?
@nashwaran4733 ай бұрын
Why is my two year old hen suddenly disposing soft eggs in the middle of night and then goes in to the nest in morning, sitting there but never lays I am giving calcium liquid as well as powder form . she also shows signs of diarrhoea. She otherwise eats and drinks normal and acts normally.

Hope you can help? I have a 3 plus year old red sexlink hen, who is losing feathers. But it's not the normal loss...I can easily, without trying, pull clumps off her. It looks like something killed one of my chickens because of her feather loss. I'm so worried about her. She has been acting a little different lately, can't seem to pin point? She's, I guess more quiet. I did notice on the 2 older ones (she is one of the older girls) there waddles, and cheeks have a blackish appearance. I have dusted all the girls for parasites, but I never dusted the inside of the coop. I would think if she had parasites, the rest of the girls would be showing symptoms?

Hi , this sounds like depluming mite to me. You need a topical spot on treatment such as Ivermectin or Harkermectin.this will only be available from a vet.

I have an Indian Aseel breed which is 6 months old with very little feathers on it. can you suggest me any medicine for better feathers on it?. Thanks in advance :)
@flytesofancy5 жыл бұрын
Dear Chandra. I have no experience of the Asseel breed although I do know of it. I would suggest that the normal rules apply, ie. check for lice and/or mites and if found apply a proprietary pesticidal powder. This could also be a de-pluming mite in which case you would need to use a topical "spot on" treatment like Ivermectin which would be sourced from a vets.
@chandrasekharkomma29225 жыл бұрын
@@flytesofancy thanks for your valuable suggestion. Request you to do some research on Indian Aseel as it is one of the largest growing industry every where. It also adds a colour full feather to your crown.
