@@BobJones-ey1xm Actually no what he said was not stupid. Watson in the books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was not a bumbling idiot he’s actually quite smart and a good match for Sherlock Holmes. In the movie, he provides a comic relief to Sherlock Holmes seriousness, but in the books he’s just a serious and as smart as Sherlock Holmes. He’s a doctor, so that says a lot.

Jeremy Brett was also an excellent Sherlock Holmes and the difference between the two was the quality of scripts and the screen adaptations. Hollywood took too many liberties IMO, and the later British production stayed closer to the original writings and storyline of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Nigel Bruce epitomizes Watson? Read the books and short stores. These are the only series of films that depict the character of Dr. John Watson as a brain damaged idiot. Yes, 2 from Fox, 12 from Universal. Also, don't miss their hilarious cameo in the Olsen & Johnson comedy, "CRAZY HOUSE", where Rathbone says... "I'm Sherlock Holmes. I know EVERYTHING!" But don't forget the SHERLOCK HOLMES radio show, which Rathbone & Bruce did for years, during the entire time between the Fox films and all thru the Universals. And when Rathbone got sick of doing it, Bruce continued, opposite Tom Conway as Holmes! After Bruce passed away, Rathbone played Holmes twice on TV-- but sadly, both appearances are "LOST". He did however record 2 sets of "books on tape"in the 1960s, where he read original Conan Doyle stories! As the stories are narrated by Watson, this means Rathbone was actually playing Watson-- and in the 2nd set, where he did voices, he actually impersonated Nigel Bruce's Watson!

They took a lot of liberty with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories..., but the acting skill & charisma of Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce (along w/ Dennis Hoey) carried these old "pot-boiler" flicks!

Don't make them like this anymore. Absolute classics. How much better they must have been during the original screenings in beautiful ornate movie houses and on the big screen. What a time that had to be.

@@paulconway384 Curious as to how any of this isn't politically correct ? I can't imagine how any modern renditions of Holmes is any more or less politically correct as compared to the old films. Also, computer generated imagery is really nothing more than a set. Looks to me that they are using sets here. Not like it was all filmed on an empty stage without props.

This was one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes movies. If I were in that movie, and could associate with the Good Comrades, I would like to be friends with Captain Simpson because he was a sea captain. By him being a sea captain, I can imagine the adventurous stories he would have to tell. I would sit by Alestair's fireplace, with a glass of wine, and listen to the Captain tell those fascinating tales. 🍷🔥⚓🌊

Has anyone else ever wondered how this would have played out if Holmes and Watson hadn't been hired by the insurance company ? Would Alastair have been the last one standing and if he had got all the insurance money then the others would have just come up from the underground cave to extract the money from him then bump him off. And presumably they would have bumped off Mrs Montieff as well to avoid any loose lips. And then as they were all supposed to be dead they would have to disappear again overseas ......on Simoson's boat ?

The wonderful ‘House of Fear’ - one of my favourite Sherlock’s. Used to watch these as a kid when they were shown on BBC2 back in the 80’s, back when tv wasn’t filled up with reality crap and concerned with being woke. Just good old fashioned entertainment with classy actors and talented film makers. Thanks for uploading. Excellent quality.

Have you ever read any of the original stories or novels? Dr. John Watson was an intelligent man of action. Nigel Bruce portrayed the character as a brain damaged bumbling idiot. How could such a moronic buffoon even become a doctor? I have always hated how the producers decided that Watson was a profoundly stupid imbecile.
