Your absolutely right about beekeeping being local. Love the experimental stuff and especially the shop videos. I always wondered why you didn't have more subscribers. Not being monetized the platform doesn't recommend the videos. Maybe think about turning it on for a bit just to get more interaction with the channel. You can always turn it back off. Thanks and all the best Scott. Good health and God bless

You do a nice job on your videos. Your side stacker has intrigued me from the beginning. Remember without experimentation there would be no advancement. I have tried numerous things like using rough lumber on the inside of Nucs and still using them and now there's a company selling hive boxes this way, too funny.
@BeekeepinginNorthernOntario11 ай бұрын
I think the rough cut lumber is a good idea, I remember reading a research paper from the university of Minnesota if I remember correctly and it talked about the benefits with the rough cut wood. Apparently the bees coat the wood with a layer of propolis and it helps them fight off diseases. It is on my radar and I hope to build a few hives this way at some point.

Thanks for sharing this. I keep bees in Ontario as well and although I did see cleansing flights in my yard this weekend, the temperatures never seem to get as high as I would like, especially for the smaller colonies. Also, I agree, its not the cold that is the problem but the extended time/periods without a substantial cleansing flight.

yesterday we had -57 F in interior alaska. Been cold for 3 weeks here. My hives are insulated and alive.
@BeekeepinginNorthernOntario11 ай бұрын
"My hives are insulated and alive."..If its working keep doing it. I was following a fellow from up your way a few years back and he had a small shed/hive stand that was insulated very well and he may have even had a light bulb for the real cold nights. If my memory serves me well I think he had four hives in it. The south side had two large doors and the idea was if he got a warm sunny day in the middle of his winter he could open it and give the bees a chance for a cleansing flight. I always thought it was a very good idea and have often thought if I start to see problems with my bees not dealing with the cold (my cold not yours...LOL) I may try something along these lines. As I said if what you are doing is working stick with it but if not the little shed might be an idea to think about. Thanks. Scott

Hello from NB. Been enjoying your videos. I see you like having a bottom and top entrance. Have you watched any of Professor Tom Seeley's videos/experiments/research he's done on bee hive entrance locations and sizing? You have a fantastic opportunity to perform your own experiment regarding single bottom entrance versus top and bottom. As a 66 year old first time bee keeper with simply 1 hive my experience is minimal. Cheers

' As a 66 year old first time bee keeper with simply 1 hive my experience is minimal.'.....never to late to start, I help a fellow a few years back , he got his first hive at 85 years young and he had a ball playing with them. I run a top entrance in the winter as most years the snow is to the top of the hive and the bottom one is covered. In the summer I only run the bottom one so that when I work the hive I don't have them coming back to the top entrance which is not there and they end up looking me in the eye and getting mad...LOL Thanks for watching Scott
@wstepnout721511 ай бұрын
@@BeekeepinginNorthernOntario I live on the south coast of NB We have many thaws here and the snow would rarely be deep enough to cover the entrance. Also my bottom entrance is about a foot high. I have a camp 2 hours north, not uncommon to have 7-10 feet of snow on the ground.
@BeekeepinginNorthernOntario11 ай бұрын
@@wstepnout7215 Very good, so long as they can get out on a warm day there is no need for the top entrance then, the only other advice for a new beekeeper is to watch the bottom entrance. Sometimes it gets clogged with dead bees, a year like this I check it once or twice during the winter. Thanks. Scott

How are the late season mite loads in your snelgroved hives vs your other hives
@BeekeepinginNorthernOntario11 ай бұрын
Most years by the time I get the honey off it's getting too cold for me to open too many hives, and way too much robbing, I use oxalic vapour and no need to open hives so I just treat the whole yard.

Do you use bot boxes on top
@radsk511 ай бұрын
Hot boxes
@BeekeepinginNorthernOntario11 ай бұрын
No, I just let the hive vent and allow the moisture to leave, I see no need to save the moisture, I have seen beekeepers locally use wood shaving or wool in the top of their hive and It just collects the moisture and then freezes. My inner covers are insulated with a small hole that just lets the warm moist air vent out the top.I am going to try to shoot a video to show this. Thanks for watching Scott
