I went to see U2 about three or four times very early on in their career. The last studio album that I bought was the fantastic Unforgettable Fire. A brilliant record. Did you like their music all the way through? Funny. I have never been a huge collector of live albums. I always tried to go and see the bands that I loved in person. That was the only way that I could really hear how they sounded live. Without the studio overdubs. But one of the live albums that I loved was Briefcase Full Of Blues. You can clearly hear John Belushi's vocals were getting blown out at that point in their short career. They did not bother to overdub a lot of it which was great. But I also loved it because the band was playing so well. I was a huge of fan of early SNL. So that may have added to my appreciation of that record. Really enjoyed the variety Martin. You never and I mean never disappoint~ Rob/Boston

A quarter of an hour is long enough for me Jack. I'm actually quite a placid person but what gets my goat I can be pedantic about it for ages so that was a build up of moaning. Old rock stars and their opinions can be quite tiresome sure. Bono seems more tolerant and open minded to me than others. We all prefer, dislike certain people for personal reasons. I'm being diplomatic about these ones. How much of a sheltered rock star lives these guys live it's difficult for us to know. Right, enjoy the rest of your weekend. Martin.

Hi Rob, in answer to U2 i like from start up until and including Achtung Baby. Discoteque was ok too but then generally they went backwards to quite average in my book maybe the odd song here or there like Yahweh or beautiful day. Live albums I'd agree are difficult to relate to even if you've been to the concert and on the same tour.

Allegedly, Kylie and Nell Mangle were serial bullies who mercilessly targeted Harold Bishop for months. Australian tv execs have long whispered, in hushed tones, tales of on set name calling, body shaming and hiding Harold‘s lunchbox. Kylie‘s certainly a wrong ‘un.

Good evening Martin. I was telling James today in response to his Peter Gabriel video. That my cousin from Queens/NY sold his whole King Crimson/Peter Gabriel collections for $100 k. But I made a mistake. He paid $40, 000 for all of them. The person who bought it paid him $10,000 at a time. He paid it all off within a year. But with that being said. He got over $400 albums. There were quite a few rare pressings from all over the world. In my opinion it was only worth buying if you were a huge Crimson/Gabriel collector. So I guess if you are selling off your collection. Some people may want to sell them all in one shot. con't Rob/Boston
@Thevinylscavenger5 ай бұрын
I'm more trimming the collection than selling off lol. If you see your records more as a living organism it's easier to buy or sell bits. Very evolutionary for a Christian I guess 😂 otherwise it'll just be dead and 'a thing'. Libraries change their books it's not some exclusive club. Hope that makes sense.

Our Aldi's don't have free stuff at the register. I think the Greatest Hits for Hall and Oates is enough as well. I have had an outbox with 200 titles for the past 10 years and I still haven't moved them.

The Bono book was interesting. That band really had some strict ideals that they stayed firm to especially early on. It gave me a better understanding of him and the band. I just finished a book on Richard Hell, another interesting guy.

Hey Steve happy Easter to you. Sorry on the late reply my end. We had a UK VC meet up few weeks ago which was Awesome 😎 sorry I've not watched you lately just life being busy. Hi Martin - I once had an entire box of stuff to purge, and then I changed my mind, but now I realize that I haven't listened to any of the records I put back on the shelf. The U2 backlash is very interesting to me. It seems that when some bands become very famous, people turn on them. I still like Morrissey, but some of his statements are concerning.
@Thevinylscavenger3 ай бұрын
Backlash yes, here in UK in general we build up people then the press knock them down. It's a national pastime. Mozza and U2 have both been victims to some extent though both have dabbled into politics and we don't like that here. A bit like here religion and politics don't generally mix.

I also watched the NTX guy's video.. It was slightly depressing, actually ! 😅 I mean.. What to do with all of these records ? For now, I love collecting and having a huge assortment of music .. Speaking of Doobie Bros. John McFee was the guitarist on My Aim Is True " Alison" and Almost Blue..CA. He is a sensational multi instrumentalist from Santa Cruz, Ca.
@Thevinylscavenger5 ай бұрын
Yes it was depressing but realistic I guess, but doesn't mean you cave in and trade in for peanuts. Best to join them and trade at fairs a bit or sell on-line a bit. Or even give away to friends or charity (here charity get decent money for them though sometimes overpriced them). Maybe as a retirement plan it's interesting hobby but ATM I'm so busy with work I can't yet. I think this January has been first month in years I've not bought any records. There's a planned VC UK meet up next month hopefully I'll be there. Smaller country less people here 😁

Hi Martin. I thoroughly enjoyed your ranty ramble. Nasty Kylie, or Rev Al and his poor sermons, or Murderer Manilow, should all be cancelled immediately. I wanna hear more Barry Manilow chat in the VC! And, as a kid, I used to have a recurring dream about Hamble from Play School.
@Thevinylscavenger5 ай бұрын
Tell me more of this Hamble and the relationship with your mother hmmmmmmm 🤔 (psychologist Freudian 🤠 hat on)...... I heard Kylie asks if anyone has same dress on before she arrives in a room but isn't that all women?

Hi Martin, this was a lovely and very enjoyable mini-rant (to be encouraged). But then even mentioning the Pop Princess in a less than perfect way is a capital offence, and to say Dame Julie is Honourary American is a bridge too far. Consider yourself chastised 😂 Hall and Oates, Frampey nice. Back to the Egg, one of my fav Wings albums. Btw congrats on the 6-0! The hammers were ‘mullered’ by Rice (as I heard someone say). Mike

Happy Easter Mike this comment slipped me by. Poor Kylie I laid into her but I never watched neighbours or like her SAW produced songs. I think probably the more shy introvert pop star can suffer from we want to know more about them combined with they probably just want their privacy intact. I'm not saying I like a loudmouth but it kinda goes with the pop rock star image. We have the audience expectation of that (media studies remark). Are you still off The Smile album or have you warmed to it yet?
@TheVinylVoyage-ud3uf4 ай бұрын
Hi Martin, I really like the new Smile album. They just sound like Radiohead-lite to me. More conventional songs and a sound that is possibly more appealing to the mainstream.

Nice ramble Martin. I went to a fair yesterday and made my first proper purchases (sort of) of 2024. I seem to have arrived at only wanting to keep 'War' by U2. I don't really have an opinion on Bono. We don't need any more figures of hate, let's protect our national treasures. Looking forward to seeing the BBC Records collection grow...I have given quite a few albums a second chance after moving them into the sell box and even listing on Discogs. Not struck on Mr Ben?
@Thevinylscavenger5 ай бұрын
Would I be right to say U2 not bono are an enigma? I mean you could argue their songs are full of hope particularly Christian roots (end of sermon). I hope national treasures includes given back other countries national treasures 😄, am seriously considering having a BBC section and in numerical order too that'd be revolutionary for me a strict non numbers non alphabetical person. It's a subliminal place to hide a bit of OCD. The last bastion of order in my life. The merry go round of ins and outs is fascinating. I'm glad you have joined me in the club that most of us probably are in anyway. Mr Benn? Hmmmmmm not really no. It remains sealed ATM and in the pile to possibly move on. Was it Southampton fair you went to? Any good?

U2 are an enigma to me but that's probably because I haven't tried, or felt inclined, to look too deeply into them. Quite happy if we return what we seem to have found. It was Andover fair which is normally small but even smaller yesterday. However very happy with my purchases and I saw Richard Warwick and had a quick chat with him.@@Thevinylscavenger

@Thevinylscavenger3 ай бұрын
BBC was very different then wasn't it? Far fairer and definitely more conservative though cracks were covered up like Saville. The Mr Benn is little bits of incidental music from the series and all under two minutes per track so not really my thing tbh. It was an impulse buy and there was other bits leftover the weekend after but I chose that for some reason ho hum.

Hi Martin. Ever since Bono had a terrible mullet and leather trousers at Live Aid, I've taken against him. It does sound like you've taken offence at Mazzy taking offence at Roger Waters, so maybe the three of you need to get round a table and chew it out. The drawing on Symphony of the Body is the thing they used to have at the start of World in Action isn't it, which had that incredible analogue synth theme tune. Nice to see the Liberator on the cover of the BBC Sound FX record. I've never heard that Frampton live album. My dad disliked most pop music but he had a particular antipathy to Shakey. Cheers, James
@Thevinylscavenger5 ай бұрын
If Shakey double denim'd which is a fact then Bono's mullet clearly needs locking up too. I think I'd be waiting for Roger and Norman though, they'd be at the UN trying to sort it out. Fight maybe? World in Action yeah I remember it but not the tune so will have to Google it. Ah ironically I was outside the BBC today for something completely non vinyl related as you'll see on Facebook. Gary (Lineker) didn't come out with tea or cakes which disappointed me. Frampton started the vocoder thing passed it to Cher who owns it now?

I became a U2 fan in the summer of ’97. It wasn’t Pop that got me. That disco theme was awful. What happened was: I bought The Joshua Tree on CD, and I liked it. I still held these negative opinions about the band: 1.) Too many of their songs sound the same. 2.) Bono is very lame, and he embarrasses himself when he (constantly) tries to be cool. He is pushy, and the need for constant attention/praise is not an indicator of good mental/spiritual health. 3.) Bono’s messiah complex isn’t cute. 4.) The vision of America that U2 served up in Rattle and Hum was cartoonish. 5.) The band doesn’t rock very hard. Of course, the band’s inability to rock later reached new lows with “Elevation” and “Vertigo.” (“I Will Follow” was their best rockin’ tune.) 6.) The Edge’s guitar effects try a listener’s patience. Guitars should be played instead of programmed. The Edge’s guitar noises are too clinical and sterile. Rock came from the blues. It wasn’t developed in a laboratory. 7.) Henry Rollins was correct when he criticized U2 for having a weak rhythm section. (I don’t like Henry Rollins’ music. I’m using the fallacy of appealing to the experts/authorities.) As a U2 fan in the Y2K, I again agreed with Henry Rollins that All That You Can’t Leave Behind was adult contemporary music rather than rock. Even as a member of the U2 cult, I found that the compositions were forced and clunky. “Stuck in a Moment, etc.” was a very awkward and jerky tune. “Kite” was the most “organic” song on the album. (Bono’s talents make him a tragic figure.) U2’s Atomic Bomb was slightly better, but the band’s mid-life crisis was evident. They were becoming culturally irrelevant. Things would only get worse. Their biggest fans no longer like their new music. They want to see The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby when they go to live shows these days. U2 tacitly agrees that their new music really sucks and gives the crowd what it is capable of stomaching: nostalgia. My opinion of Bono has changed. I don’t consider him to be lame. He is detestable. Here are some objections that I have to his spiritual nature: 1.) Bono promotes The Message Bi(b)le. For your consideration: There’s a short documentary video on KZbin of Bono’s pilgrimage to the home of Eugene Peterson. (I liked Eugene Peterson’s house.) 2.) Bono’s charities are suspect. Remember the ONE scandals? Also, RED’s self-righteous branding was truly sickening. Dollars for us and pennies for Africa. Like the RED celebrities sang on The Jimmy Show in 2017, they’re all going to Hell. 3.) U2’s decision, to throw the weight of their fame into backing legalized abortion in Ireland puts the blood of innocent children on their hands. 4.) Bono is very cozy with the Clintons. You can’t do that if your moral compass is working. His needle points south… to HELL!!! Cheers, Jacob
@Thevinylscavenger5 ай бұрын
Message bible yes it's fiction. I've seen that video at Eugene's house a while ago. I agree it's a lovely house how bizzare I thought that too. The charities and abortion are dodgy. Personally I can't agree with abortion or I may well not be here today. Regarding the music they've done a decent amount of stuff. Two parodies that are hilarious you may know are (1) negativland - the Casey Kasem spoken word sample and (2) English comedian Bill Bailey's total power failure at a U2 gig. Maybe I'll find the linkages for you now. Both funny. Bono is an introvert and the other three keep quiet. How does that work? 😄kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGfKgYaJjt2YrpIsi=aFHPMX2rP4d3mgAS kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWGsZ2uVibOWZ8ksi=3UvzK8k9X2VPCYsU kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmnHi6qOo7KliLcsi=WV1mhGBtK2KBN1oZ Yup Bill Bailey a funny musical man has done parodies of Kraftwerk and Metallica to name but two more.

Haven't seen the comedy bits, yet. The wife and I enjoyed Bill Bailey in Black Books. (I've also enjoyed his live act(s) on KZbin.) British TV was still putting out entertaining comedies in the early 2000s. We tend to get things on delay over here. Have there been any great comedy sitcoms in the past ten years? I tried John Cleese's show about the elderly couple with the middle-aged son. Like Gervais' After Life, it wasn't very good. I've gone down the rabbit hole of watching Limmy react to James Corden and Cilla Black on Twitch clips posted to KZbin. Like Cliff Richard, I can't remember ever hearing Cilla Black on the oldies radio stations. Cheers, Jacob @@Thevinylscavenger
