If you do prune shrubs with buds set, put the branches in a vase inside and they will bloom indoors and give you a spectacular flower arrangement to help you get through the winter!

So strange how the climate varies across the same zone. Here in Baltimore, I'm Zone 7B also, but our ground is totally frozen and will likely stay that way for quite some time. Our lowest temps in the winter might be the same, but we have so many more cold days than Raleigh! No planting for me any time soon. :-(

What turf do you have? We just moved to the Raleigh area and pur lawn is dormant. I think its a bermuda type grass but its not my favorite. Is there a turf you recommend? I love the look of a kentucky bluegrass/rye/fescue mix.

Thank you for all the great info!! Are you using Plant Tone on your grass? Also, would it be an ok time to put together a drip line? I'm starting a pollinator garden and want to have the drip line laid out before I start putting plants in (already have it all planned out). Obviously I wouldn't actually hook up the drip line due to possible freezing temperatures quite yet (in the Sandhills area). Or, is it better just to wait till April to do it?

About Birds ... Aside from safflower sprouting here and there, I do not get lush growth below my feeders. One of my assumptions is that it is due to bird trampling. However, are the seed remnants best to be left to compost in place (is it beneficial) or is the accumulation of oils a problem. I have predominantly safflower, niger thistl, and sunflower hearts.

I shovel it up occasionally and spread it over a wider space. I think it's never good to concentrate anything.

You can use old sheets or you can buy a frost protection blanket, which are pretty inexpensive. It doesn't have to be fancy! You'll be taking them off as soon as it warms up.

Drag out that weed eater (or lawn mower) and cut down the monkey grass! You will be so glad you did! Monkey grass will reward you with beautiful, fresh growth that will be bright green and so smooth.

Only thing sucks about using a weed eater it makes a huge mess. I have an battery mower and a gas mower and the battery mower does a lot better job cuz it don't seem to suck up my mulch from my beds. Of course I always use bagging mode too so it don't make a mess either.
