I'm currently reading The Haunting of Velkwood and loving it, maybe you might too - it's a twist on a traditional haunted house story where instead of a house, it's a haunted street!

I read the arc of "Floating Hotel" it came out yesterday and was really fun if you want a palette cleanser. It's a cozy space thriller following a gaggle of misfits (crew and guests) on a spaceship hotel. There's intrigue in the bg about a corrupt empire, but it's mostly a character study (the ship is treated like a character too). I had a blast!!

Yes yes yes! I too was a bit late to the party with Tananarive Due. I think I heard her talked up so much by other folks (and heard her speak, herself, so eloquently) in that Noire Black horror documentary a few years back, that I finally thought...I gotta read this lady! The Good House was the second book I read by her and man oh man did I love how you talked about it --I am a cheesy corndog, sure, but you really did bring me to tears! The first one I read by her was a book of short stories, Ghost Summer, and that's how I initially became familiar with just how much HEART her stories have. Her characters are so human, and she's the kind of author who doesn't punish you for caring about them. I love her so much! A five star book I read this month was Thirst by Marina Yuszczuk, a sort vampire lit fic, I guess? About female agency and mortality and motherhood...and it goes interesting, unexpected places. I really loved it.

Sarah! Thanks for sharing. That makes me so happy to hear! I’ve not read Ghost Summer yet. But I’ve read The Between which was like a fever dream. Very speculative but in a different way. What is the documentary you mentioned? I don’t think I’ve seen it.

@@ReadingWryly it’s this one! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horror_Noire:_A_History_of_Black_Horror . It led me to watch what has become one of my all-time favorite movies, Eve’s Bayou, and holy crap do I wish it were based on a book, because it would have been an incredible read, but as it is, it’s a phenomenal film.

My suggestions for possible 5⭐ books are Come with me by Ronald Malfi and Cry Baby by David Jackson. Come with me was one of the first books I read this year and I'm still thinking about it. Cry Baby was magnificent, especially the audio book. The female narrator was spot on. Cry Baby is part of series but can be read as stand alone. Both can be found on Audible for free.

Im sorry about the lack of 5 stars. I’ve read two back to back. First was They Always Come Back by Emily Smith. I wasn’t sure as I was reading it, I thought I had guessed the ending. But the way the writer used subtle symbolism, that I think mostly just seasoned thriller readers would pick up, was absolutely beautiful. It got me emotional at the end. For a debut, 5 stars. Then I finished How Can I Help You? with Laura Sims, again it’s not my favorite book ever, but for what the author set out to do it’s absolutely 5 stars. It’s not about waiting for twists, but about these two characters and we know from the start one is very dark. The audiobook narrators were also fantastic, it was hard to know which I liked best! I’m starting a random book that I’ve hardly seen talked about Little Red House by Liv Anderson today..and again from the start this book is dark, that was unexpected. Hope March is a better month for you 😊

You've moved My Husband up my TBR. I love T. Due's writing but I cannot get past the "sex" scene in The Good House. She was asleep, he went out of his way to make sure that she didn't wake up which meant that her pleasure was irrelevant and she was just a hole for him to use, they were newly dating so there was no consent to this sort of act, and at that point he thought that she was mentally ill. It gave me the heebies and bothers me to this day. And I keep harping on about it Off my soapbox, great video as always.
