Fed Up With Youth Soccer Clubs Stealing Players

Soccerwire.com Letter to the Editor: "I am speaking out concerning, what I feel, is a massive issue facing our soccer organizations, and most importantly, our youth soccer players. This year has set a new low in the mission to provide an environment where our kids can thrive and adults foster long-term participation in the sport that sees a large scale drop off by the age of 13. As a collective group, we are failing to properly serve the youth soccer community in the United States."

Most kids are not going to D1 or a PDL. But if you do your job right, they will still be paying soccer well into old age, with friends from countless teams and with an attitude of fitness for life. But the only way to do that is to gift the youth a love for the game.

I had my son play club for a year and a half. I saw it first hand. Our club, which was Michigan Fire, but is now Michigan Rangers, only cared about money. We saw the stacked teams. My son was a decent player, and we were even approached by other teams to play for them next season. It is a mess. We left. We started our own team for our Catholic Elementary School and joined a co-ed "Lutheran League" of private school teams. The kids got way better, my son included. They had more fun. They got more ADDICTED to the game. We even got a Nike sponsorship. Thats mission accomplished.

How do you never cut players? Just keep adding teams and coaches? Many of these tournaments and state leagues have a max roster of 16-18 for 11v11.

This just came up on my feed--interesting and valuable advice. Parent's don't know what they don't know. Coaches have no scruples. AND, I no longer referee (after 13 years) because I'm tired of having to accept their abuse. Well-done, coaches. Our country sucks at this sport due to your terrible influence on USSF. Nothing has changed since my kids started at U6, and continue to play the sport despite all the idiot coaches and clubs (and universities) that house them.

It’s not the club’s responsibility but the parents. The parent makes the decision to where their kid plays. Especially since these programs aren’t free. As a parent with a son that plays, I will look for a program that will benefit my child.

Saw that during tryouts this past May where large group of players were being poached at their own fields. So to properly explain this, clubs were training at their own facilities and "scouts" from other clubs were showing up and convincing players to move away with them. It really is not necessary to explain how this is wrong in so many levels. However the inherent brokenness is that there are too many clubs, with talent spread too thin and each club could care less about the development of youth soccer players but rather how they can get ahead of other clubs. And what's worse, is if I am so inclined, I could go out there and start my own club adding further to the maintenance of mediocrity in US Youth Soccer.
