Federal budget 2024: Liberals failed to tackle “corporate greed,” Singh says

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh expressed disappointment in the Canadian government's 2024 budget on Tuesday, saying the Liberals "ignored the opportunity to take on corporate greed."
The NDP has a supply-and-confidence agreement with the minority-governing Liberals, which will face a federal election no later than 2025.
Global's Mercedes Stephenson breaks down Singh's comments on the budget and whether they could hint at the NDP voting against it.

All MPs are in the top 10% of income earners in Canada. They are elites. But which party has the most social support policies? Even if they all are elites, you can talk policy and see which would be better or worse for the lowest Canadians. Because if the lowest level Canadians benefit then everybody else can. As in, if Housing became a human right, like Universal Healthcare, the poorest Canadians would benefit as well as everyone else on up. But if housing was socially funded and managed, Pierre wouldn't be able to be so rich on exploiting people, he might be sad.

Conservatives slash social spending, while, of course, keeping their very generous MP salaries of $180,000 a year, Pierre gets a PM raise, inequality keeps rising in Canada, corporate profits increase, more privatization of healthcare, housing, education and other sectors while people realize "they've made a huge mistake" thinking PP and the Cons would fix everything because they thought Trudeau was the root of the problem. Turns out the system is the sickness. Capitalism is socially, economically and ecologically unsustainable and needs to change. Singh doesn't understand the fundamentals of economics in a free trade market. Corporations move out of Canada if you increase corporate tax too much. Then you get no taxes from that company at all. If you have a factory that has 1000 employees making $100k per year, those workers are paying roughly $35k per year in income tax. That's $35 million in tax revenue, just from the income tax that the factory generates. Let's say that the factory makes a gross profit of $150 million per year, less $100 million in wages(which contributes $35 mill in tax). They then have $50 million for simplicity's sake (Not including operating costs outside of wages). Let's say they have $20 million remaining after all operating expenses. Now they pay another 28% tax on that. Another $5.6 million in tax revenue. That's a total of $40.6 million dollars that the government earns from that factory when the corporations stuck with 100% of the risk only make $14.4 million. How much more of that money does Jagmeet expect companies to cough up? They'll simply close their doors and move to a country with a more favorable tax structure.

USA has the most favourable tax structure for many major corporations. Very low taxes on big corporations, famously major corporations like Amazon and Wal-Mart paid $0 in tax. Yet USA is off the charts in horrible public health scores, violence, inequality, crumbling infrastructure and medical and college debts. USA should be the best place to live in the world BY FAR for every single person if this theory of low taxes on corporations so they don't leave is supposed to lead to a better society. It doesn't. Give it up. Capitalism is unsustainable. Inequality rises, corporations take over more and exploit more people to the detriment of the society at large. We need system change. How about economics for the 21st Century? As Kate Raworth explains "Doughnut Economics." How about that for a measure of public health of a country or region?

@@italiaskate25 If you avoid investigating the structural problem here, which is market economics on a world stage, then you'll only see the symptoms like you said, sociopaths at the top, debt and inequality, etc. And you'll miss the opportunities for change because you aren't looking for it. Might I suggest you open your mind and investigate more to find the truth? Check out "A Viable Society" talk by Peter Joseph and he has other great works like Zeitgeist: Requiem the film coming out and Culture in Decline series. Free market capitalism IS the problem and it has not 'worked for quite a while' by any scientific, public health framework. Look at the world: every country is either way overproducing, wasting and unequal or deprived, robbed and exploited by the richer powerful nations all for the sake of private capital growth. Quite disgusting really. Just because capitalists found a profit motive to create more SmartPhones and TVs doesn't mean 'capitalism works' and that we couldn't come up with a MUCH BETTER system that creates things we need and yet also manages resources much more humanely.

@@stevenjohn1470 The problem with capitalism is that it destroys small business, local co-ops and it promotes mega multi-national corporations that do no pay their fair share in tax, like the many mega corps in Canada such as Loblaws or Rogers, etc. We have a fundamentally unsustainable economic system and that is what really needs to change. Capitalism is structurally unsustainable and the way taxes work are a part of the symptoms of the sickness generated by a backwards social system. No politician I know of is even close to understanding this, but the socially progressive ones like NDP at least propose some mitigation policies and more social supports to give people a hand up. I wouldn't cry a tear if corporations were taxed out of existence as well as billionaires and mega-millionaires. Inequality is unhealthy and you don't have to take my word for it, take Dr. James Gilligan, who do loads of research on this topic. Doctors, surgeons, dentists and pharmacists are important roles in society among MANY important roles in society that should all be compensated well. If we change our thinking to the 21st century we stop worrying about national debt, which is grossly misunderstood and a perfect political scare tactic often used by Conservatives to not help people and give more power to corporations. We focus on things like "Doughnut Economics" put forth by Kate Raworth or One Small Town Contributionism by Michael Tellinger and we build local cooperation, collaboration and co-ownership towards a more prosperous and sustainable society for all. Totally agree. Raising the minimum wage doesn't help when the people on the top refuse to take a cut to their profits down. All it does is kill the middle income households.

Corporate Greed has narely destroyed this country. 50% of Canadians barely survive each month, 25% more are homeless and whats left is rich people living large off of everyone else. We have stores and companies making record profits and still jacking up prices everywhere and it's created the largest degree of poverty since The Great Depression.

The ignore the largest business markets greed which is real estate. Prices are based on what they can force people to pay and not what their actual value. Anyone in most markets that sells something gets a few bucks, real estate gets a the insane value of a new car (upwards of $40k total). Real estate is nothing more than rape and pillage with no real reason for it.

The conservative leader didn't say why he didn't like the budget, just the same old carbon tax rant. The NDP leader did say it didn't tax the greed of large corporations eg. Grocery stores, enternet companies ,brewers retail stores owned by a monopoly of 3or 4 players or any other corporations that have monopoly that can be excessively greedy gouging people using their products or services.

Carbon tax + tax on the 2/3 of capital gains is bad for tax payers and the economy. Instead of increasing tax on the individual tax payer, the government ought to broaden the high income taxpayer base.

Profitable tax paying industry pays tax paying employees. If you over tax a company they go away.. and no money = no tax income, no employees = no income tax income for the government. Less profits = less industry = less tax imcome for the government. No income for the government = failure. Failure = debt Debt = interest Debt + interest = more debt All this combined is the liberal government. So supporting this = more debt. More unenployed more poor. That is bad NDP. Dont support Bad
