Federal Copper Plated 12ga 2-3/4" 16 Pellet 1 Buck 40yd Test W/ 11-87 & Stock Full Choke

Today we bring out some of the Federal Premium Copper Plated 12ga 2-3/4" 16 pellet 1 buck shells and put them to the test at 40 yards through the Remington 11-87 and its stock full choke. Were these shells a surprising disappointment? Stick around and see how they perform!

Flush modified did amazing for me the full threw all over the place for me

I talked to an ammo tech at Federal a couple years ago. They were just starting to roll out the new roll crimps (no pun intended) and said they would transition over to all the buckshot. Stated reason was that police officers were complaining about leaking buffer material from their shells when stored in the shotguns that could cause function issues. They just should just heat seal their star crimps like Winchester does vs using these new roll crimps.

This is the only Copper Plated shell that I've seen with a roll crimp on it. That's why I was curious about it. It does seem like they changed more about the load than just the crimp though because these didn't perform anything like what a Copper Plated shell usually does

It's about what I expected really....People think chokes make a huge difference....at 40 yards it's gonna spread out....actually some buckshot groups tighter out of a modified

Chokes can absolutely make a huge difference at 40 yards. You can look at any one of our tests with the same load through different chokes and see that. Sure, some loads may do better with more or less choke, but I pretty much always start with a full choke first and see what happens since that is what's recommended more times than not

Agree. The older shells don’t have this. I’m not sure why it’s different now but they are. Is one reason I have went to the BB.

I'm curious if they are in the process of changing all of the copper plated shells or not. So far, it seems to have hurt them more than help them, but we'll see as we continue to test these I suppose

Thanks for testing. It’s why you test ammo and choke combos. I do think it can do better.

It wasn't the worst we've seen at the end of the day, but it was definitely disappointing for a Copper Plated load

Always keep in mind not every shotgun likes every load. A different gun with the same choke might do better...or worse.

I’ve found that 00 & #1 Buck seem to preform better for me out of a modified for coyotes out to 50 yrd. I run a Mossberg 500 28in accu-choke barrel with an extended mod choke. - if I’m using Fed-FC I use an IC choke. I only use a full if I’m shoot 2 3/4 #4 Buck or BB… or shot for upland bird, ducks, grouse, etc.

Yeah, it was a little bit of a letdown to start off with. I guess we'll see how they do with some other chokes

Yeah, Federal makes a ton of options in the Copper Plated line
