Federal Signal Unitrol Touchmaster Siren

This is my rather rather beaten up Federal Signal Unitrol Touchmaster Siren Console. I purchased it from eBay for $30. As stated in the video, I believe the polarity is somehow messed up on the "RLS" switch. If the polarity was positive rather than negative, then I would have wired the "Horn Ring" to the "RLS " instead of having the push button, but as it is, the button works fine. All other functions seem to be working. (Have not tested a mic) The speaker is a 100W Federal Signal AS-124. (Neither the siren console or the speaker are for sale)

That Hi-Low sweep siren I LOVE IT! I know Milwaukee County Sheriff uses it, love hearing it, if it were up to me I would use that siren every time I had to turn my sirens on...

I used to do a bunch of ride alongs with a local cop in my hometown PD they had this siren and it’s a beast. It does a lot and I saw it in action first hand!

That hi-lo tone is used by the Chicago Police. I play a game called Midtown Madness and that siren sound is in the game.

You are correct in game they used the touch master delta tones, which were at the time in real life during 1999 and 2000 Chicago was using the touchmaster delta.

The real Chicago P.D. have been using the Code 3 RLS and having been moving to (I think) the Fed. Sig. PA 640...in Midtown Madness, the Chicago Police cars have the Touchmaster Wail and Ultra Hi/Lo and Air Horn tones with the Yelp tone being more of the older PA-20 siren.

Nah Chicago Police from 1992-2005 were using the Federal Signal Touchmaster TM-4’s up until 2005 when they switched to LED’s & Code 3 Mastercom-B’s

My Unitrol only does the wail, air horn, & hi-lo, I can never get the yelp, the sweep tone, & the manual tone to work.

Empire Gaming I'm assuming you have a Touchmaster too. The yelp and sweep modes are activated with the horn ring terminal on the rear of the unit. I ended up being able to wire the horn ring directly to the RLS terminal and that gives it momentary positive power. From there the sweep modes will be available.

Yes! There is a way to get Hilo. Inside the unit, there are a series of dip switches that control the siren tones. There’s one that deactivates the Hilo. I don’t remember which number dIP switch it is off the top of my head, but it is easy to look up online which dip switch controls what and by switching it to the opposite position you will have hilo back.

1 off = Disable 3rd tone in Wail sweep 2 off = Disable Yelp in Hi-Lo sweep 3 off = 2-tone Hi-Lo instead of Ultra Hi-Lo 4 off = Disable Hetro in Hi-Lo sweep 5 off = Hetro instead of Hi-Lo in Wail sweep

What's the different between dip-2 and dip-4?

Un3qual The difference is not on the wail setting, but on the Hi-Lo setting, which I did not use. Dip 2 alternates Ultra hi-lo/hetro, and dip 4 alternates Ultra hi-lo/yelp in sweep mode.

W with lights the ground wire and another power wire. but the yellow which is ignition isnt hooked up maybe it something internal im not sure

There should be 3 red wires labeled "W lights", "Siren", "Access". Those need to be connected to positive power. There is also the black wire, (ground), and the yellow wire, which operates the RLS. "W lights" is power to the slide switch. "Siren" does all siren tones and air horn. "Access" works the TDKN, Left, and Right alley switches and AUX.

All 3 are connected except the yellow 1 i even ran a seperate wire from horn ring to the speaker and got nothing im not sure what the issue is

I'm not sure why it's not working... Actually, horn ring needs to be connected to momentary positive power. That's why I connected mine with a jumper wire to the RLS terminal (yellow wire to positive for power to RLS)...What power source are you using, and what kind of speaker?

Denny Holt I’m glad you are enjoying your touchmaster! It does not have an official “off” switch, but as long as you don’t leave any functions on, it will not draw power. I had mine hooked up to an external battery for about a month and it did not drain the battery beyond just using it. However, I would recommend a relay that is tied into your ignition, just Incase you accidentally leave a switch on, it won’t drain the battery. Hope that helps!

Is there a way you can repair the rls option? I opened up the unit and the light by rls is not lit up when on. All others are. Does this mean the rls is not working on my unit?

I don’t recall seeing a light for the rls. There is one for the aux that will blink but not “click”. I’m also assuming you have it wired properly? (Wire running from rls to terminal 12 horn ring).

+justin selvage Same with mine when I first got it. But there is an easy solution. First try to use a piece of copper wire to connect the RLS terminal, on the back, to the Horn Ring (12) terminal. If it works (not all siren units will) by depressing the RLS switch, it will activate the sweep and yelp tones. If that doesn't work, then you will have to purchase a momentary push button (like I have in then video) [Any Lowes or Home Depot will have it] and connect one end to Horn Ring (12) and the other to a positive power source (usually the same one the console is wired to). That is the method I had to use, because my RLS would not switch the tones. Hopefully that helps.

Is there a futara tone to this specific model? Or is it only limited to the TM Delta? Also, would you rather get this model or the delta?

No futura on the the TM4, just Hetro. Just on the Delta. I personally prefer the TM4, it has a smoother transition from wail to yelp, and I like the sound of the wail a little better. All personal preference of course.

+justin selvage Unfortunately, I won't be selling at least anytime in the near future, so for me to put a price on it would not be a good idea. Prior to this, I had been looking on and off for about 2 years and one day I just happen to see this one on ebay for $30. In my case I settled for one that was cosmetically in distress. So my best advice would be to keep at it and some day you'll find just the right one at an affordable price. Thank you for your interest and best of luck!
