Breguet is for kings, most Pateks are for prime ministers. I like both brands, but I agree with Federico, most Pateks are boring, and the fun ones cost more than a house, so I don't care much about them.

After 3 years of contemplation, during which I purchased several watches including a bespoke with amazing guilloche, I purchased a Classique. The other choice was a Calatrava. I could not be more pleased with my decision. The Breguet has so much more detail and craftsmanship displayed. Both luxury, one interesting.

So happy your back my friend! Personally I prefer Breguet, many Pateks are absolutely wretched in respect to the design. They are overpriced for what they are, and the company it'self is far too stuck up for me.

Breguet is in my opinion one of the best looking watches, and the the way they are handcrafted is amazing. However, as you said they do not get a lot of love and they seem to lose their value quite a bit. Unless you absolutely have to have a brand new one, you can buy preowned for half the price.

Great to have see you back Federico! Totally agree - Breguet was my first watch crush after I stumbled acccross their website when I was about 16. Got them to send me a brochure and was expecting something cheap and cheerful as they were giving them away for free. Two weeks later a massive book landed on the doorstep which was exquisite for a book let alone the watches it contained. Pretty sure there was a handwritten note too.. I probably had a £7 Casio on at the time if anything. If I ever have 30K burning a hole in my pocket I would definately go for a Breguet over the any of the 'Big 3'

Federico i was in Red Square in Moscow and went to The Brequet store and in the front window they had only 6 watches in a simple display case and you are correct i felt like i was in a art museum they truly are works of art and i am a diver and sport watch guy but they were the most amazing watches i have ever seen, and there was a crowd of people just standing there taking pictures and admiring them.

Agreed 100% everyone and their grandma knows a Rolex, a Patek says, this person not only knows watches, but has a nice collection at home. A breget is for the true luxury connoisseurs it is not understated not one detail was overlooked. Been a fan of the company for twenty years hope to be able to afford one. Till then I have my iwatch. 😀

I think they are absolutely gorgeous watches that unfortunately have gone largely unnoticed by the majority of people. The price point is WELL above what most can afford, and like Patek, they are a brand that only serious watch lovers, and the most refined among us can truly appreciate. For myself, I cannot justify the exorbitant cost of owning any watch in this range, but if I was swimming in cash, I would most certainly turn to one of these perfected works of machined art.

Great analysis. Breguet has amazing finishing details. The brand is less well known, has a high price point for entry, and I think in general is just a less accessible brand given the styling details for most. It is clearly underrated. If u are in Vegas, the boutique there is amazing and the staff will give u a great introduction to the brand.

I saw in my bar on the right side, "Federico Talks Watches", and was going to ignore it, but then I noticed they were new videos.... So, welcome back Sir! Great to see you. I don't blame you for not wanting to move again. I sort of made the same decision as you a few months ago. About 2 years ago, some of us got forced to move. I guess we weren't "forced", but it was, move or you're out. I'm only like 4 years from retiring back then, so I felt like I had to do it.... So then, things were done wrong, offices were papered with grievances... Fast forward to a few months ago, as the "settlement" for all that, it was on the table for me to move back.... But geez, I just moved. I didn't have it in me to move again. I sold my house, I would have had to try and find something else.... I couldn't do it. I may as well just sit here, finish it out, and then move again to where I REALLY want to be.... So, long story short, I don't blame you.... I wish you continues success, and look forward to your videos!

I think, the watches that Breguet makes, aren’t for everybody. And that has nothing to do with the quality, but rather the design of the hour marks (the numerals themselves, whether roman or arabic), the hands, the placing of the second hands or additional functions in the dial. I also think, Baroque is a very appropriate term. Many watches seem to be manufactured for royalty. But the point here is, that they don‘t have appeal to a greater market, as long as they have a sustainable business.

I knew from the title that this was going to be a great video! Personally, the classique and calatrava are two of my favorite lines of watches. Being a dress watch enthusiast, I love the subtly, simplicity and elegance of both. I do understand what you mean when you say the calatrava is a bit restrained, but I kind of like that. I personally loath flash time pieces and I love how the calatrava can can go unnoticeable and be special just to me and other watch enthusiasts who are able to spot it. The classiques, like you said, are a little more out there but in a posh way. I think they have just the right amount of flashiness for a dress piece without going overboard. On top of that, the guilloche dials are simply to die for! In the end, I adore both, and can see myself one day having both in my collection.

Totally agree! The history alone warrants more love for Breguet - I just found my "Grail" in the 7337 and will attempt to purchase the 5104 as my first Breguet in Gold. To me they are "The Watchmakers" vs JLC. I love the Guilloche they produce and the fact they still use the tools from the 1800s to produce the watches by hand. I feel it's just a lack of marketing, as to why Breguet is a "silent surprise" once you look at the history and the selections. I'd wear this 7337 over a Patek, AD, or VC any day. Nice summary for Breguet.

As a discerning watch lover for quite a few years, I find Breguet a bit problematic because: 1) the present Breguet is recreated from Lemania, essentially a movement manufacture, after Swatch bought Lemania and renamed it Breguet; 2) the original Breguet went bankrupt many decades ago; 3) regarding the details in finishing, from my experience in person and from the pictures on the different forums, at the places that are hard to reach in certain models of the movements, the bevelling work is skimped, and one example is that either the left or the right side of the balance cock--which can be seen through the display back--is not bevelled at all (I forgot exactly which side). I get that the present Breguet has the style of the original, but the present one is just a namesake and there is a disconnection of history between the original and the present company. Other present brands that claim the history they do not actually have are Jaquet Droz, Glashuette Original, Arnold & Sons, H. Moser & Cie.... and the list goes on.

Harold 刘 we could say that for most of them now. A Lange and sohne had a gap so did blancpain and even vacheron have been bought by richemont. Ultimately how long does a company have before they are bought by a massive conglomerate. I don't think it discredits the watches though
@harold8832
@harold8832 7 жыл бұрын
Lewis, let us look at what you said case by case: 1) For A. Lange & Soehne, because the company was forced to disappear by the communists, and it was reestablished by the fourth generation of the Lange family, Walter Lange, exactly 145 years after his great grandfather first established Lange, there has been a meaningful connection of history between what the brand was before and what it is now; furthermore, in terms of engineering and craftsmanship, most Lange watches are clearly superior to literally any Breguet ones. 2) Regarding Blancpain, you are correct; if this brand somehow becomes extinct in the future, I won't care much. 3) For Vacheron Constantin, even though it was bought by Richemont, Vacheron has had an uninterrupted history, so it has a clear connection of history between the past and the present of the brand; moreover, the craftsmanship of a Vacheron is, for most of the time, superior to a Breguet because Vacheron has not skimped on the painstakingly meticulous work required for flawless craftsmanship. Overall, on a sentimental level, the disconnection of a brand's history, and on an objective level, the standards of engineering and craftsmanship, both can discredit the watches. Hence, we cannot say that most of the watch brands are similar to Breguet.
@Murmedon

I think that Blancpain is in a rather interesting point in it's life. When you think about the Blancpain of old, making tool watches like the original 50 fathoms to the modern haute horology house that it tries to be, it's rather interesting.

I fell hard for AP Royal Oak even before I knew anything about watches... now feeling the same way about Breguet. Its elegance and sophistication is hard to match. I really want to love Patek for reasons other than it is ‘Patek’, but I am struggling... most of them are blah (design wise)

I definitely think that these are watches for the "connaisseur", the ones that don't get street recongnition exactly because they are rarely seen in the streets; but then you must ask yourself "who is this watch for? Is it for me or for the others?" I love Breguet watches.

Due to my vague steampunk inclinations, I have a heavy bias towards so-called "skeleton watches," in particular. I love the tiny, precise parts that work together in functional unison. The Breguet skeleton watches I have seen are the most beautiful, surpassing even the "Holy Trinity." And this video *perfectly* expresses my own thoughts on why I regard an aesthetic like Breguet so very highly!

I love Breguet as well...their past innovations cannot be cast aside. Love the Breguet hands! They have gone through tough times in the past 2-3 decades. At that price point, it bothers me that they have less and less in house options. Patek on the other hand has never gone through moments of weakness and their movements are incredible. Their watches (aside from the grand complications) are more simple, but when you look at their attention to detail, the simplicity is amazing. It amazing how they and Vacheron can make such thin watches and produce such complicated movements. There's a reason why they're a step ahead of everyone!

Agreed. For a luxury watch, "simple" and "plain" would be the *last* things I'd want! A Breguet is a thing of beauty, and if I'm ever looking to buy in reality, that brand will be my first choice. That said, AP's "Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked" is a pretty impressive exception to the brand's usual plainness

A little note for those who aren't too familiar with Breguet. I used to overlook Breguet. For a very long time a Vacheron was my grail. One day an AD who saw me looking at the VC's showed me the Breguet classique chronométrie 7727 and when I took a loupe that dial my entire world changed. If you are ever near a Breguet AD, I urge you to walk in and ask to see a Breguet dial under a loupe, you will not regret it.

Fed! Couldn't agree more. My two favorite pieces of all time are the Patek 5970g and the Breguet Tradition Tourbillon Fusee 7047 (first seen by me on the wrist of Batfleck). Both are incredible pieces, and represent something kind of funky in around the same price point (i.e., north of 100k). The other thing is that both are executed in a way you just can't find elsewhere. I could go online right now and get a Frederique Constant that looks just like a Calatrava. Will it be executed to the same level of finishing? Absolutely not, but to me, the finishing doesn't justify a 100x price increase. That damn Breguet, though, I can't even find a decent watch with Breguet numerals and those gorgeous lugs at a price point that I'd consider accessible. Moral of the story: they're watches that, really, are immune to homages, and that makes them worth it perhaps more than anything else. Glad you're back, man!

I own a Longines Elegance 18k gold (888.2, 64 hr power reserve) a poor mans Patek Philippe Calatrava . It’s a keeper as an any time affordable stab at luxury horology that gets the odd glance other than me checking the time. Yet I have to admit that I am lusting after the Breguet 10Hz 7772 in white gold for that extra bit of invisible heft.Its way out of any predictable budget for me any time soon. Realistically I’ll probably settle for a Zenith Captain DualTime in steel (possibly rose gold) as it sports tasteful yet very legible guilloche dial appointments and carries an in-house movement. I watched this episode over a year ago and it still serves in letting everyone know who is interested that Breguet really is the benchmark for luxury horology not without innovation.

I def think ALS (Lange) and Patek first When it comes to the very best ..but I have always respected and lusted after Breguet as well...I still dont think their movements or modern day passions to be as focused as Patek or even Lange, but they are right up there with my favorite brand VC and also AP, JLC (which I put up here only because VC is so reliant on them)..

Breguet Classique 5277 as a cheaper version of the 7727, the ultimate, in white gold. These would be my ideal dress watches. Not a moon phase guy at all, but really appreciate the dial layout. One thing that might influence a dress watch decision of Breguet versus Glashutte (sorry, Lange, can't get over the date digits being at different planes, the visual imbalance, just like cyclops, irks me to no end) is the maintenance and reliability of the watches. I would actually like to hear more about the wearability or the reliability of the movement of these luxury watches. Will they require yearly maintenance? The more complications, the more maintenance. But how does the Breguet Classique 7727 with the 1/10 sec hand stack up against the Glashuttes and Langes or even Rolexes in terms of durability? How about versus Patek and AP? Lastly, I agree with you Federico, about Patek's somewhat lack of flare, extravagance, and yes, boring look. That said, I have not owned one so there may be other things emerging that would give it personality. But since I am not impressed by chronographs or moon phases, I am not sure Patek can offer something exceptional for me over Breguet except exclusivity.

Agree 100%. If one is going to spend large sum of money on a watch, better make sure it gets noticed. Breguet does the job well.

Thx for the vid. I have the Breguet 7727. There's something that stands out about a Breguet that always gets people's attention. Thx for the love. FYI, Hodinkee has been chatting up Piaget recently. You talked it up first.

You are right. I've seen couple weeks ago a new one with the equation of time in a store where the other top brands are for sale ... and the Breguet was standing out!

I am someone who does not like to flash money around. A Breguet watch is very flashy and in your face, Pateks are not. I like to have wear a very nice watch, but at the same time be under the radar. This is why a timeless or "boring" Patek watch is elegent in its own way. Hopefully this answers your question about why people like Patek watches.

I don't know if you guys will read this because it's an old video, but VC would be a much closer comparison to Breguet. Part of timepiece merit is HERITAGE, and VC is linked with Jacque Droz through the Laschot family, and is a very old brand that is still pure and has an extremly momentous past. Breguet had its moments in the late 18th century, and VC had its moments in the early 20th, but both have advanced beyond Cox and Droz while AP and PP are merely swimming with flippers adorned whilst VC and BG are the magestic whales of the industry.

Frederico, I fell in love with the beauty of the Breguet classic. I own one. It is amazing that you can buy one, used, at a very inexpensive price that is used in excellent condition for a really low marked down price. Especially the one you showed a picture of with the moon phase, power reserve and large seconds hand. Where the Patek Officer's Watch, similar to the Breguet is listed well above the manufacturers price, and has been discontinued for over 15 years. This Patek is a beautiful watch. But have to ask you, why such a large variations in price points on the resale market? I mean really extreme. Breguet goes down to half the price, where Patek in this case has doubled. Any assistance will be appreciated. Most Pateks are very boring or even not pretty. Breguet on the opposite are pieces of art at face value. Any assistance would be appreciated.

People whom appreciate watch, should know Breguet. It is one of the most artistic watch that still follow traditions horology at its best over the centuries. Breguet watches is an artistry of perfection that never alter any classical perception from day one. That is the beauty of Breguet dedication and allegiance. A brand that has stood the test of time and worn by King George III, Queen Victoria, Alexandre I of Russia, Napoléon Bonaparte, Ettore Bugatti, Sir Winston Churchill, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Gioachino Rossini, Arthur Rubinstein etc. It is also my most adorable watch because of its extraordinary historical associations with royalties and famous leaders in the past. Breguet is synonymous with notable history of the past events.

None of the watchmakers in the world got me into watches, but definitely you did. When searching internet to buy my first watch I'm coming across with Raymond Weil watches. What is your opinion about that brand? There is one on particular that I like which is Raymond Weil Maestro Gold-Tone Mens Watch 2867-PC-00659. Will it worth the money or should I move to a different brand considering the money I want to spend up to a £1000. Thanks Federico and please keep up with the best work you do on your you tube channel. Thanks,Raz.

Nothing invokes deep emotion than looking at a Breguet timepiece. I looked at a Patek vs. Breguet. Breguet gave me some weird emotions. 🤣 Definitely luxury par excellence.

I am having a tough decision wanna hear your opinon - the omege 50th anniverasry speedmaster with enamel dial vs the breguet type 20 limited edition the one with black bezel . Hey Fed, this video has been up for way too long for you to see this, but no you're not wrong. First, I happen to agree with you about Breguet being kind of underrated and Patek being a little boring (though I'm pretty uninformed compared to you si maybe take my opinion witb a few grains of salt). Second, and this is the real key imo, your opinion can't be wrong so long as you are true to yourself. So long as you can honestly say "I've seen everything and even though I'm supposed to like that other thing best, this is actually what speaks to me", then you are right.

Thanks for shedding some light on the lesser talked about high-end brands like Breguet, Piaget, Lange etc. I remember these brands from when I first got interested in watches, and I think they're not playing the online game very well. But maybe they don't have to ;)
