I own one of these and quite like it, but the danger is that it's a gateway drug for the hard stuff. Maybe a Brightz Chronograph, then onto the hardcore Ananta or Automatic Flightmaster, then one day they'll find you: all your belongings sold, rocking back and forth clutching a Grand Seiko Spring Drive Chronograph. "What is he saying?" They'll ask when they come to take you away. "He just keeps repeating: 'The sweep. Look at the sweep.'" Buy with caution.

My boss has a beautiful Blancpain solid gold Chronograph. Out of the blue it just stopped working (it was on a winder). He has spent over a grand servicing it and two months, and it is still not back. Automatic chronographs scare me. I have also heard horror stories about Rolex Daytonas.

The SNA413 has been on my wrist nearly every day since 2009 and it has been incredible. It's been dropped, scraped, and submerged with no issues. The battery life has been impressive, with only one battery change since I purchased it. As my daily watch, it's worn both casually and with a suit. Despite the the 42mm bezel, the slim case makes it easy to wear with dress shirts/french cuffs. Definitely an attention-grabber around the office. I certainly have an sentimental attachment to this watch. I recently was given the SNA411 as a gift, and immediately put it on a NATO strap. Excited to see how it wears, but I suspect the 413, will always be my favorite. I can't say enough about the durability of this piece.

Buy what you like. It's your money. Nobody cares. I love my SNA411. Though I did put on a Polarised AR sapphire crystal, which destroyed the 200m WR. But I don't fly and I don't dive. It's all just novelty. Probably a way to satisfy my carnal desire to be a man. Probably stems from years of parental neglect. I don't know. I like collecting watches, so I cannot afford therapy.

To all you "wanna be, me too, snob watch enthusiasts" the minute you disrespect a quartz watch, you immediately show your hand as an amateur, shallow, casual commentator. This type of movement plays an integral role in an a proper watch collection and if you don't get it then you have not though about the balance between design and purpose - get it?

You nailed the two reasons why I sold my blue/white dialed version. It wore way too small, especially for such a busy dial, and with no anti-reflective coating, the sharp colors of the dial never did pop. I spent the first two days trying to peal off a plastic protective coating that wasn't there because the crystal was so cloudy.

Appreciate your review. I just ordered a SNA414P1 SS which is virtually the same watch and arriving 9-17-18. I am not a pilot but do have uses for a math aid from the slide rule. Very anxious for its arrival. This will be my 5th Seiko and feeling like that will be it for a while. If I am still feeling the need, a Spring Drive may top off the collection. Do I need it, NO. Some tools and watch bands are arriving as well to help refresh the look of my timepieces. Happy, Happy, Joy Joy.

I had this watch to use at the gym and for bike rides. I figured the quartz movement and 200m WR would make for a very robust beater. Also, I wanted to use the chrono to time sets, laps around the park etc. Unfortunately, I found the chrono minute hand extremely hard to read. Also, the slide rule scale was so tiny I couldn't read it. I ultimately had to sell it.

This watch is a great symbol of aviation, like having an aircraft instrument panel on your wrist! It is durable and affordable and just says "let's go flying on this sunny Saturday morning!". But for practical purposes, the dial is too crowded with tiny unreadable numbers that, along with the sub-dials, prevents fast and easy reading of the time. But it is still a beautiful watch!

It's a slide rule bezel, no more complicated than the Navitimer. It has reference points to different categories such as US gallons , Imperial gallons, miles, kilometrres etc, but it is a slide rule. Simple if you know how to use a slide rule. Great as a currency converter or similar. I grew up with slide rules so no problem to me except for reading it with my tired eyes without my strongest reading glasses!

+Garry Perkins, for sure it is worth it. After doing a bit of research, here is how it falls in placement. SKX, Monsters, Turtles, Sumo, MM300, MM600, GS diver. So the Sumo is that sweet spot giving you the styling of say the MM300 but with the 6R15 movement. The truth is the Sumo has more alternating curves than maybe any of the watches in the line making it punch way above its weight. Also you can buy the ratching clasp that is on all the high models for it. For sure, jump on the Sumo.

Hi Federico, now I don't personally don't like the Flight Master at all! For me , there is to much going on on the dial. I like it more drawn back! Now to the new Seiko paddy turtle! Wow what a nice comeback for Seiko! There are only two things I really hate on watches! 1st it's the paddle on the end of the second hand! I hate those! At nite when I want to look at the time, it always draws my attention to the wrong position of the second hand. and it looks like it doesn't belong there.And 2nd, is the red minute hand! Same here,it disturbs the over all picture of the watch. But man, would I love to get my hands on one of the turtle Seikos of the seventy's! Another thing I wanted to ask you. I own a citizen Promaster NY2300-09LB The dark blue dial with gold writing and 200 m water resistant . I really love this watch, especially the hands and the dial with it's markers. It looks really great and coherent. Also the movement is very reliable and durable. Would you consider make a comparison to your Seiko SKX ? I really would like to hear what you think about the Citizen. What makes me wonder is the fakt you guys never even talk about Citizens divers at all! Now why is that? greetings from Germany Frank Schroth

If that was automatic or manual wind, I would have one. It's easy to do whatever functions in quartz and quartz watches are far better in every way, but I just love the lowtech complexity of mechanical movements. Slide rule bezel really is a good reason to make the watch as big as you can handle. Usually I find today's big watch fashion just silly, for telling time there's no need to make the watch bigger than 34-38 mm. Even in big wrist that size is more comfortable. But I have a 45 mm Seiko with a slide rule bezel and that could be even bigger.
@GarrySkipPerkins8 жыл бұрын
Automatic chronographs are EXPENSIVE to service. They also need to be serviced often.
@esa0628 жыл бұрын
True, but mechanical chronograph movements are beautiful. In quartz movements there is nothing interesting. You can make it do anything, it's just electronics. On mechanical movements complications are done with gears, springs and levers and they are much more intriguing. Chronograph function itself is much better in a quartz or better yet phone, but that's not what's interesting.
@GarrySkipPerkins8 жыл бұрын
esa062 Good points. I agree with you, but the total cost of ownership terrifies me. I would have a hard time swallowing triple-digit servicing regularly.

I LOVE this watch, I wear it on a beat up leather strap that matches an old leather bomber jacket I have and it just works. Ive bought nicer seikos, the blueberry GMT, the new Alpinist, but I always find myself throwing this on in the winter because I dont have to worry about it at all and it just works. I hope they make a new Flightmaster. I brushed the entire case and bracelet, imo tool watches shouldnt be polished. would be even nicer if they bead blasted it. People complain about the bracelet but its beautiful for $200. the alarm is useless. you can barely hear it, might be a good reminder in a quiet office or library but not much more. also the alarm is a pain to set as it can be used as a gmt. I often set the alarm by accident while trying to set it to a second time function. perhaps if you become more familiar with it you may find it useful however I would not rely on it.

I bought a Flighty on TVG's recommendation. I like it, but I don't love it. A pilot watch needs to be legible.The 411 needs to be Seiko Monster-sized, with high contrast hands. When I was flying, I wore a G-Shock which displayed both local and Zulu (UTC) time. As for as the E6B (calculator) functions; I had two flight computers (one digital, and an analog backup) in my bag; both much larger and easier to read in the cockpit. My Flighty gives a different look from the Seiko divers I usually wear; and a "toolier" look from standard chronos.

In the early days pilots had to do a ton of calculations. During WWII guys would write tables on the plane (tale gunners and such). Navigators often had to calculate fuel burn at various speeds and altitudes. These watches are for them. The slide rule is a pre-calculator thing. If you were flying a decades old Piper Cub, this watch would be essential.

Garry, I flew a 10 year old Cessna 152. We were trained to use the "Whiz Wheel" style E6Bs. Calculator style flight computers didn't appear until the late 80's or early 90s. I kept my old one in the bag, just in case.

UPDATE - it wasn't the watch, it was me. more to the point, I didn't like the NATOs I tried on it (black and yellow, solid black, admiralty gray). nothing really worked; until for some reason, I put on a Bond (classic). Man, that just changed the look of the watch from I should sell this thing to - it's the watch I wear even in the house. You wouldn't think a strap can make a real difference, but it can.

Nice review Federico..the watch is just far too complicated and looks messy..I love the Navitimer not sure it should be mentioned in the same breath as this .....now the Padi is a very nice piece of kit uncluttered and stylish....

The Navitimer is on another level. It is also one of the few Breitlings that do not look like crap.

i would not waste another minute without the PADI dive watch. The dial is absolutely beautiful and looks even more amazing underwater. The bracelet is just ok. I bought a strapcode super oyster bracelet (the one with the 22mm to 18mm taper which pushed the watch over the edge). For you, I recommend the strapcode super jubilee. Four-hundred dollars (including the bracelet) is chump change. Sell the skx!

I have the flightmaster in a gold version! I do like it but it is small for my liking. On my small wrists it looks like a lady's watch. I like the crystal thou making it thicker than most watches.

I see this listed as SNA411, SNA411P, and SNA411P1. Any differences?

I heard letter suffix is for manufacture locations: there's K, J and P and prob. some others too. Japan mfd. (J) most desired, nothing wrong with the others tho.

It’s a nice watch. Good tool(that I mostly don’t know how to use, honestly) and it has some wrist presence.

Bezel functions are insane! Marc at Long Island Watch has a video "Watch and Learn #11" with the math/skill to use it. Looked in the comments below - sorry if this is a repeat comment. Go watch and learn, you might be surprised how it works!
