I'm the proud, non-pilot, original owner of a Seiko 7T34-6A09 Flight Computer (bought in 92), the predecessor for the SNA411 Flight Master. With only battery changes, this quartz gem still works like a charm. Thanks to pages like this, TGV, and Marc at LIW, I just pulled the trigger last week and received the sna411 two days ago from Jomashop. I'm liking it a whole bunch, and hoping it will show the same robustness it's ancestor continues to display. Keep up with the great videos.

I used to fly planes, all the way to twin-engine turboprops, and I do own a Flightmaster as well. I bought it as a replacement for my Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute Ref. 809 that I foolishly sold about 8 years ago for, if memory serves me, around $1,650. The Flightmaster costs less than a simple service of the Navitimer, and it has a wonderful wrist presence. In my opinion, it looks way about its price point, although I had to pay $315 for an open box item but price are already around the $400 mark. A great all around watch to own indefinitely!

I looked at this watch about a year ago, but ended buying the SND253P1-4. Currently only $130, with a less busy dial and a better chronograph function (12 hour totalizer and 1/20 second resolution), but only 100m WR. I did end up gifting that watch to a friend, in a generous moment after I bought a Citizen Blue Angels World Chronograph AT8020-54L (a major step up in features, quality and price).

I like the Citizen Nighthawk and this Seiko Flightmaster for the GMT function and 200m water resistance. Great for a travel watch. I can't even read the pilot bezel on either of them due to the small print, even if I did know how to use them.
@JohnClarkW
@JohnClarkW 4 жыл бұрын
I still think the Citizen Nighthawk is the cooler looking inexpensive slide rule pilots watch, but it isn't a chronograph. I use the slide rule occasionally for unit conversion, so it is pretty handy. It is also a 200m watch, and it has a GMT hand and the hour hand can be set in one hour increments without changing the minutes or seconds, which is cool when you are travelling.

As usual; great presentation and review. I've owned this watch about a year. As with most that buy this watch, I only use the chrono and alarm features. I love that Seiko made the crown and function pushers screw-down. How many people actually utilize their time pieces in regards to what they're designed for... F1 or other racing, Diver, Aviation, etc.? I have 30+ Divers rated from 200 - 1000m but have never been more than 40 ft beneath the surface. I love collecting the different types of specialty watches. The best part is that I have family, friends or work associates that have experience utilizing their true functions. It's fun to watch them "play" with watches especially when they explain to me what they're doing. My favorite experience was letting a coworker "use" my Flightmaster. Surprisingly, he enjoyed it. He had been a navigator on a B-52 and most of the squadron had Breitling's.

If you can find a good strap to match both main colour & the red features on the dial, the Nighthawk looks incredible. Love my flighty, of all the features I use the unit conversions the most. The bracelet is good and bad at the same time. Solid endlinks are always nice. The polished center links, help the watch dress up a bit but the center line in them kills it. I ended up getting a 21.5mm super engineer bracelet (meant for the seiko tuna) with straight links, and shaved down the ends (with a dremel) to fit. Love it to bits, always gets a worried reaction from my friends when I jump into the water with it haha.

I had this for a short while. It's a great watch for the price. Love the yellow accent on it. Often discounted and up on Mass Drop a lot.. I think for around $200, not a bad watch at all. Couple notes that might be worth considering should you keep this watch for a while and information of interest below: - I appreciate it comes with a bracelet option, although this is probably best paired with NATO/Zulu or 2-piece strap. That being said, I never liked the high-polished double center links. It looks cheap, especially since you can see the seam between the 2 pieces.. why they did this and not just make 1 solid center link, IDK? I remedied and improved it by brushing it out to match the brushed finish of the rest of the bracelet which looks a lot better. It even helps reduce that thin seam in the middle, also. - As you know, it's obviously a strap monster, but, the spring bars are really close to the case. I recommend getting a set of curved spring bars, 21mm.. Yes, it's an odd lug/strap space. BUT, you should have no problem fitting 20mm straps to this as the 0.5mm gap on either side is negligible. Attacking from the opposite end, you can squeeze in perhaps the next most common strap size of 22mm. With the aforementioned use of curved spring bars, it will facilitate such attempts. - There are many cool complications and features on the watch.. mainly to look at and rarely, if ever, to be used in practice. The alarm subdial on the bottom. It is a bit finicky to actually set the alarm if you've read or familiar with how to do it. As such, I might set and possibly use it as a 2nd-time zone instead, a pseudo-gmt. If you like this, maybe you might like the rarer panda white dial blue subs variant SNA413? You say that you are not into vintage, but you may at least want to familiarize yourself with the older automatic Flightmaster SBDS001 which I believe you will find pretty cool and be more useful to you overall in terms of the details and features.

I picked up one of these awhile back when I saw TGVs review. I hadn't really ever considered a slide-rule pilot watch before that. What got me was the depth of the thing. You can look at it for the time and see one thing, look further and you see the chronograph, look further and you have the alarm, ticking seconds and dual-time, look further and you have conversions to your heart's content. It's like staring into the depths of a successively complex bowl of complication. Yet, it's also legible, not very monstrous and can take a beating. So I roll it out every now and again and enjoy it. Lately, I've had more wrist time with the Arnie reissue, but I come back to the flightmaster and it feels like I never put it down.

Maybe it raises my IQ?🤔💭 Yeah ok that’s subjective! I put mine on a nylon NATO & yes it was fiddly to do but the result was worth it. I also have several flieger watches, some WW2, some modern. The nostalgia gets me, my dad was a WW2 veteran. But the modern interpretation I think harks back to those simpler older watches, obviously with a today application. Good review as always mate👍🏼😎

I’m going to say I’m in a rare camp of being a pilot, a diver, and a watch enthusiast, but if I’m really honest, in both diving and flight watch’s have been made as obsolete by better interments, as the have in everyday wear. I actually have a Garmin MK25 that works as a technical tri-mix dive computer and will communicate with flight instruments in a plane “hell I’m fairly certain in I can set auto pilot with it in the right plane”. That being said, I still value the capability of using the traditional tool watches as a redundant back up gear “even though I could remember one of the damn slide-rule conversions to quite literally save my life”.

Single engine planes are surprisingly economical in the states, you can get a used one for the price of a good quality used pickup truck ~$15-20K. These planes can also be used to make money especially in rural areas where it can be used as a pesticide plane. So I wouldn’t call this wonderful piece something that a person with a plane wouldn’t buy. I’m sure that plenty of flight enthusiasts will appreciate this timepiece.

It also has a tachymeter and a compass bezel, something you don't see often in combination with a chronograph, alarm AND slide rule. It definitely is feature-packed. Also the slide rule can be used for any calculations, for example you could use it to figure out how much to tip at a restaurant, engineers and mathematicians could use it for quick on-the-go math as well. Just like the chronograph can be used to time laps or the tachymeter can be used to calculate how many envelopes you can seal in an hour, all these features are useful in aviation in the event of electronics failure but certainly aren't limited to it.

It can do so much “everyday” math with just a quick twist, and yes it can do more advanced mathematics too. There are a couple of things that have been putting me off from buying the watch. I can get past the hardlex crystals, but I will say, Seiko’s bracelets drive me nuts!

Great Video Jody. I bought this watch 12 years ago in the Blue and White colours....really love it especially for the Alarm/Dual time features. I just love the look of mine especially in the blue and white. Its a keeper for me!

I have a feeling I'll be using all the features/complications the watch offers if I'll buy it. I'm a pilot myself and I simply love when something actually has lots of useful functionality.

The trick to adding alternate straps (Zulus, NATOs, etc.) are a pair of Curved Spring bars (works "a treat" as Jody might say ;- )

A pilot wearing a Flightmaster came into my hotel the other day. And while I can't say I'm a gigantic fan of busy watch dials, I am a huge pilot's watch fan, an aviation fan, and a Seiko fan. The watch was beautiful... think my favorite part is how the crystal distorts the face from the sides... I'll probably never own one (busy dials make me think of math. Math is evil. Just say'in...), but I can definitely appreciate a beautiful, well made watch when I see one. 👍😎

I have solar version without the screw downs. I love it, I always wanted a slide rule watch as a kid. One useful trick is to set it to convert currency if you are abroad!

I know this review is old, but I have to say, I love my Flighty. It looks like it's on a mission, it's reliable, and some day I'll go through the manual and figure out how to do a few of the functions for a party trick.

I must admit I was waiting to see one of that features I would never used and was I disappointed when I did not even get unit conversion. This one needs a sequel!

The slide rule is not just about pilot things, you can actually use it for calculating or converting a lot of every day stuff. Really love that watch, but i have a quite similar solar seiko with chrono, alarm and 100m wr that I love so I've always wondered if they wouldn t be a bit redundant...

I'm a former commercial pilot who owned 3 aircraft (all 11 seaters setup for freight) and I would never use my Flightmaster in the aircraft - impossible to use in flight in smaller aircraft. Like most pilots I used a 3.75" pilot's circular slide rule (fits in the shirt pocket) that could be more easily read inside the aircraft and had a ton more features needed by a pilot. Also I always used a sub-$50 digital watch with 2 time zones and full backlighting. Pilots need UTC and local time - that's all we need a watch for. But, I just love the look of my Flightmaster.

I have pretty much the same watch - mine is blue and white. That being said, mine is a 2005 model, but nothing has really changed. Comfortable as all hell with the bracelet and am still wearing it regularly. 2 battery changes since purchase. Bloody brilliant watch!

I agree with you Jody. A lot of watch for the money. I wear mine with a black tropic rubber strap, a 20 mm yellow rubber strap, a 20 mm stainless steel engineer watch bracelet or a marine nationale khaki green and yellow strap.

Another one that I've been considering in direct competition with this 1 is the citizens blue angel with the blue leather strap AT8020 I'm really digging on that 1. I am not a navy pilot nor have I been in the navy or military I like to watch.

The new solar powered versions - like the blue SSC609P1 are really good looking watches - I went with the new Seiko 5 (blue SRPD52K1) since my local watch dealer had it in stock - but the SSC was a strong contender.

Jody great video, very thorough as always. This watch was on my bucket list. Youve actually talked me out of it. Gonna turn my attention to the new Seiko 5 SRPD series which are just as stunning to look at but "featureless"!! Until i get my first plane that is!

What back and watch this video again in anticipation of receiving flight master number 2. I’ve regretted selling my first one and can’t wait to get it back in my collection… Having owned it I can share that it is a great wearing watch and the NDC style/Parachute stretch cord straps work wonderfully and makes it even better wearing watch...It is a great alternative 28 die watch…

If you own an X-Wing Fighter, then it is prudent to wear a Seiko Flightmaster for a redundant system just in case R2D2 is taken out during an engagement with an Imperial TIE Fighter.

I wear this usually on a so called killer bee nato strap, black with a yellow line in the middle, matches the chrono hand, 21mm wide. You can get some curved spring bars, and most natos will fit it nicely.
