Feeding and petting wild Mandarin ducks

I remember it was around autumn when i first saw this pair of mandarin ducks at the lake in my hometown in Zurich. They really seemed out of place because i know they werent local. As usual i started to feed some of the birds at the lake and this pair decided to join in. But that wasnt the time i recorded the Video. I took some Months until we became "friends" and they were comfortable enough to join me on the riverbench. It realy felt unreal because first i never saw mandarin ducks in real life and second they jumped on the bench to get some food. This went for a couple of month. One day i went to the lake as usual to feed some birds but i couldnt find them anywhere. a deep sadness hit me because i kinda knew they went away. i didt saw them ever since. I hope they are still alive and well.

In Warsaw there's a nice polulation and I even had some mandarines outside my window too - they appear out of nowhere, stay around for some months (sometimes days) and fly away - but still it's a thrilling experience!😊

It really has more to do with the fact that he's prettier. And a lil more willing to approach the human. The goodlooking and confident tend to win out. Also more likely to be hunted, but there's pros and cons to everything.

@@sw3604 Nah. Male mandarin ducks all generally look like that. Matter of fact. Most bird species, the males have decorated feathers in order to attract mates. Their colors don't indicate how much they will eat. They also generally bring food for an interested mate. If you see roosters, they're usually much prettier than the hens, but the main rooster will always call his hens to eat first or he just won't eat until they do.

I used to feed wild geese in spring and on two occasions a male got very close to me. I couldn't resist petting it and touched it's wing. The goose just gave me a confused look just like the mandarin duck but seemed to tolerate it.

You're probably already familiar with them, but if not, do an image search for Mandarin Fishes (Synchiropus spendidus), and Red Tailed Wrasses (Anampses chrysocephalus). The Mandarin Fishes are iridescent, so their colors can be hard to replicate. Most images don't really show their huge lacy blue pectoral fins, which they gracefully wave and flutter whenever they move about. What all of these animals have in common is good color vision and visual communication. Meanwhile ugly, drab mammals use their feces, urine, glandular secretions, and pungent bacterial metabolites in lieu of beautiful colors and forms for communication.

As a duck enthusiast myself I have trained about three generations of the same duck family to eat out my hands. My favourite one I named marinette (though it’s for a cruel reason, it means marinated duck) she sits right on my lap and has cuddles my my pet cats. Its an odd friendship but it works and it’s cute.

My boss has got two males and a female and they are the most skittish birds I've ever known. He had two females but one flew into the cage/run door (that was covered) and broke her neck, he didn't hatch them so god knows what happened before he got them. So basically it's nice to know that if they do have young that the babies might not be as mental as their parents.
