Feeding Baby Finches

This is a video taken from our pet finches. The mother finch just gave birth to 3 beautiful baby finches and we saw the father finch giving food to them.

I had a parakeet that was handicapped. She couldn't perch either, both her legs were twisted inward and she walked on the side of her feet. She was hatched and raised by my parakeets and I had to help her out of the nest box when the others were ready to come out. I made her special perches/platforms made from an old cage and had ladders and perches pushed together side by side so she could sit on them. She did very well and lived a long happy life with a couple of very sweet keets as buddies.

So sweet! I love this video. My two zebra finches laid 4 eggs about a week ago and I'm super excited to see the babies hatch! I've never had zebra finches before, but it's been a joy so far! My bf impulse-bought (not the best thing to do) one finch and the store said it was a female. I woke up the very next morning to singing, and concluded that "she" was actually a "he"! My bf also did not buy a cage for the bird, and would not tell me what was in the little pet-store box because it was a "surprise". Thank god I opened the box indoors! I started shopping for cages that were big enough for him to fly around in, but they were all in the $400+ range and out of my budget at the time. I decided to make a cage out of an HDX storage rack I got a long time ago ($10) and some window screening material that was left over after screen netting was installed on my windows. I cut all the screens to size individually and affixed them to a rack, and it actually came out quite nice! I started playing zebra finch videos on YT for my finch, but I sadly realized he was lonely when I saw him peering down into the cage ( I let him free-fly my room) looking for a friend. Soon afterwards, I rescued a little female finch with NO tail (the other birds at the bird mill or the shop must have ripped her tail out), and they instantly hit it off when I introduced them to each other. I leave the cage door open so they can come and go as they please, since I read that free-flying is healthy for them. Had to bird proof my entire room! I also spent hours cutting up bits of sisal and puffs of soft cotton for them to play with. They ended up building a nest and laying eggs! My little tailless female finch also ended up growing her tail back. I'm so happy and I love them so much!

Hey Fritz. Waiting for my zebra finch eggs to hatch too. Currently three but maybe more tomorrow as just layed. Was assured they wouldn't mate till next May. Am planning to do some hand rearing. Seen it done on youtube with a pipette. Egg mix seems very nutritious. Am just preparing in advance so it's not stressful when they hatch and everything here and ready. They are super cute little creatures. Would be brilliant to have the chicks trust me and be tame. Let me know how you get on. You are obviously very proud of them. Take care.

I advise you, if you are willing to, you should see a vet. But that would be expensive, but I am sure the doctor would be able to heal the leg of the finch. It is also either it has a deformity since its birth and I think since it can fly, it does have a chance of survival. But since it cannot perch, it would be a problem also, so it is either you get the bird to a vet, or just observe first.

buy nesting material thats sold in the store. leave it in the bottom of the cage..The male typically builds the nest, then they both guard them, and then the both feed them. She didn't deliver them like humans, and now he is feeding them..it takes 14 days to hatch or so. I have 16 of them and started with 2. I also breed them but I am bound to rules and regulations. Look up and research as much as you can about them, alot is out there. knowledge is power and its really interesting. good luck

putting cotton for nesting material could be very bad, it can get tangled in there toes and lead to injuries. you can also feed the baby's with boiled egg yolks or milk and bred crumbs paste.

Great video, I have a baby Zebra in the avaiy at the minute but i have a problem its legs are deformed and i dont know what to do? its parents are still feeding him and he can fly just not perch any advice would be greatly appriated.

Thank you for your question. The same with what we feed the parents. When babies are small, their parents will feed them. When they grow biger, they eat by themself.

@G0left The bird parents only eat ordinary finch seeds. When they come to the mouth of the baby, they are already half digested.

Do you give the finch birds different food or dry seeds wil be fine. Will they feed the dry seeds to the babies? My finch babies just hatched no more then 48 hrs ago.

Hello I was wondering if you could answer a question for me my baby my finches had babies I noticed the seeds and their necks of the newborns is that normal will they die I know I am feeding them the correct kind of seeds but isn't the mother supposed to eat the seed and break it down and then feed the baby or does the baby also get seeds and does the baby process the seeds on its own they had babies before and they all died on me this is the second round of newborns they have

I think they're ok. In a ton of pics and videos, you can see baby zebra finches with their necks full of those little light-colored granules. Those are seeds regurgitated into the crop (which is like a storage area before the food reaches the bird's stomach) of the baby from the crop of the parents. Unfortunately I do not know the circumstances that led to the death of their previous clutch of babies, so I can't make a judgment call there. So many things can go wrong in the nest, especially with a pair of finches that have never had babies before. There is a possibility that they died from drafts (they're very sensitive to cold temps) because the parents did not brood them property. Also, it could have been that their babies weren't fed enough, or a myriad of other circumstances. They're so fragile when they are babies, which significantly narrows the scope of tolerance to potential mishaps; human error or otherwise. Make sure your breeding cage is clean and far away from any door that could cause a cold draft. Though curiosity sometimes gets the best of us, be very careful if you decide to handle one of the eggs or babies. Zebra finches are tiny prey animals, so they can easily be scared off of their nest if they believe a predator has become attracted to the nest. With that said, I hope your new babies survived and good luck to you! Zebra finches are awesome, and I can't imagine my life without them!

ok so my finches layed egg and for a while they would take turns sitting on the eggs one day I come home from work and noticed my mom moved the cage even though I told a thousand times not to after that they would only go in there when it was night time it's been a week and today I noticed they were pecking at the bottom of the cage and when I looked it's was a dead baby bird I looked in the nest and there's two more and another baby on the other side idk what to do idk what happened idk if they hatched or if my zebras ate the shell should I just remove the nest clean it and put it back or should I just leave it alone?? someone please HELP!!!

The mother chews up seeds and regurgitates (throws up, basically) the seeds into the babys'/baby's mouth.

You need to use a special solution or something. I don't know what it is, so try looking up "baby finch food". I think you mix it with water and use a small stick (like a toothpick) to feed the baby the solution.
