Hi Dave, Best video if seen about Filter shrimps! Love it !!!how is the vortizella situation going? I am planning a bigger tank with the main purpose of housing various filter shrimps. I would assume a reasonable amount of vortizella should be benefitial. Thus would a cleaning crew of neocaridina or Armano shrimp or even bigger snails reduce vortizella to a manageable level? Also I am assuming that after molting / shedding their skin they would be vortizella free (until reinfection) . Love to here your thoughts on it.
@TheDave33311 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching the video. The vorticella are still around, but in small numbers. The best way to control their numbers is to keep the water column from getting too dirty, but just dirty enough to keep the filter feeders happy. Vorticella thrive on the bacteria living in dirty water. Adding more shrimp won't really help. Target feeding the filter shrimp is one way to keep the water clean while still keeping the shrimp fed. If their numbers get out of control, you'll see them on the shrimp and that's when you need to seek treatment (salt baths). Yes, I would imagine that they're vorticella free immediately after molting.

Hi Dave, thanks for your video, you’ve inspired to get some wood shrimp! Q - are vorticella easy to distinguish from detritus worms?
@TheDave333 Жыл бұрын
Yes, detritus worms are much larger, and if the substrate is disturbed, they can actively swim through the water column. They can easily be seen. While vorticella are very very small and tend to remain stationary. A small colony of vorticella looks like a tiny bit white fuzz growing on a shrimp, or on a piece of wood, plant, or rock. You'll need a magnifying glass to see them, while the detritus worms can be seen with the naked eye.

Is vorticella an issue in a tank with low flow on, say, an amano shrimp? Or would it end up just starving itself due to a lack of particulate to feed off of?
@TheDave333 Жыл бұрын
It really depends on how bad the infestation is. They do feed on suspended particulate matter, so the cleaner the tank is the better. A dirty tank with low flow can still develop a vorticella problem.
@crab1507 Жыл бұрын
Hey Dave! I absolutely adore bamboo shrimp and I was wondering: what are your thoughts on keeping one in a betta tank? I know they prefer higher flow while bettas prefer lower flow, but I'm wondering if it'd be doable with target feeding.
@TheDave333 Жыл бұрын
It would be doable with a consistent daily schedule of target feeding, as long as the betta was passive. Because some bettas can be very aggressive and will bite at the shrimp's feathery claws. As far as flow goes, even a gentle current from something like a sponge filter is better than no flow at all. If there is some flow, position a piece of hardscape (driftwood / rock) near the outflow of the filter and the bamboo shrimp will use that as a perch to help it feed. Bettas can handle some flow. So, if there is filtration/flow, then the main issue will be the temperament of the betta. It's hit or miss . . .
@crab1507 Жыл бұрын
@@TheDave333 I've been considering getting one for my 20g community tank that has a betta living in it. Target feeding doesn't seem like it would be an issue for me to do, but my concern would be if I accidentally miss a day (like going on vacation) or in general if the shrimp decides they want to stop fanning and instead scavenge, since I do know that is harmful to their fans. I have a HOB as my filter, with the flow set relatively low, so there's not a huge amount of it in my tank, especially after being baffled by a lot of my plants currently floating in the water column. I'm also not sure how much the bamboo shrimp would enjoy eating microfauna either. The plus side about my betta though is that he is a long finned one and doesn't have much of an aggressive temperament. He flares at my Nerite Snails while ignoring my Cappuccino Spike Snails (which are the largest of all of my snails) and Malaysian Trumpet Snails and he completely ignores my amano shrimp 😄
@TheDave333 Жыл бұрын
With lots of plants and other life forms living in the tank, there may be enough food circulating in the tank to keep the shrimp happy. If you miss a day or two of target feeding, the shrimp will still be okay.

@TheDave333Ай бұрын
Yes, it's pretty normal behavior for them to keep a low profile. Changing the flow in the tank might help because they tend to find a favorite spot in the current and stick to it. But it has only been three days, so it might be still a little afraid. Give it some time to become accustomed to its new home, and be sure that there are no aggressive fish in the tank that might be pestering it.

vorticella is awful. For so many months I was treating individual shrimp until I started just dropping 2-3 grains of aquarium salt in the tank every day. I never even got up to a teaspoon in my 5gal before I noticed no more vorticella. I did a water change and then repeated every other week 3x to try to get rid of any in different life cycles. After the final water change I haven't seen them and this didn't harm any of my neocaridinas or their babies. Not recommending it because anyone could have different results but its the only thing that actually made a difference for me

V-eels tend to swim at the top of the tank because they need to get oxygen from the surface. They do get mixed around in the water column by the current. So, they should work as long as there's some water movement. Be sure to rinse off the vinegar completely.

@TheDave3332 жыл бұрын
@Kathleen Monsegue Vinegar eels can't survive in freshwater forever, so as they weaken, they'll drop to the bottom. As long as the shrimp are finding some flow where they can sit and feed, you don't need a powerhead. Providing a place to stand where there's good water movement from the filter will help.
