I've raised worms for 40 years, my dad did also. We used the highest yield of protein chick starter, soaked it in 5gal buckets of water until it ferments, then feed. The red worms love it.
@lynnhowdeshell2641 Жыл бұрын
Is there a recipe for using the chick starter (an amount) to the water? Thank you. I have started to grow worms.
@anaitisfairy42736 жыл бұрын
The liquid that drains from the box is a great liquid fertilizer and allows you to use your scraps (they love tea bags).. If you add some brown material with your scrapes (which is better for your worms anyway) the moisture stays pretty spot on. Brown materials are organic things that sit and won't smell bad over time and are not overly wet. Popular ones include coffee grounds, AGED dead leaves/yard cuttings/grass (do not use fresh of any of those, the material should already be beginning to break down and dry. A leaf/yard pile is awesome for this) , shredded newspaper, chemical free wood pulp/saw dust (in small quantities-they break down very slowly). There may be others but don't give your worms citrus, onion family (onions, scallions, garlic,etc.), or chlorinated water. If you use tap water let it sit and air out over night or more. If you have a yard or garden check out worm tea (made from castings) and free range worms here on YT. There are so many great videos out there from people who know more than I do. Happy worming friends. Be blessed. --Caution,I heard someone crashed their worm farm with cornmeal so do your research and add it slowly.

Having given up on worm composting for years after the meltdown I am now going to start again after watching your videos and since I have time to see to the compost properly now that I have retired.

Rolled oats is less processed but either will work! As far as the egg shells add some to the food but you can also sprinkle on the worm bed!

Have been raising red wigglers for the past few years decided to try European nightcrawlers. Ordered the worms and set up a 27 gal tote with natural bedding ( leaf mold, compost, shredded leaves and a bit of native soil). When the worms arrived I dumped them in the bin, gave them a good shower and left them alone for a few days before feeding them. After giving them a good feeding, I checked the bin a week later to see how things were going. The food was all gone, but even after I fed and covered them, these little darlings were climbing up the sides of the tote. The red wigglers have never done that. So now when I feed them, I disturbed them as little as possible and do it under a good light. Live and learn. Just subscribed to your channel, look forward to taking a closer look. Stay well!!!

Thanks too for the excellent tip on feeding compost worms. Years ago I had a 10 litre bucket with bought worms. Though I just threw the waste in it went fine till I put some mackrel scraps in it. It got so hot the worms melted. Did it stink. I could not save 1 worm.

Keep a light on the worms at night, and during lightning storms, this will retain the worms, they will never crawl out.

I think the whole point of having a worm farm is to feed them healthy kitchen food scraps ! Not to buy worm food . They eat your food waist ! If you want to supplement that … add crushed egg shells for calcium and grit !

That depends commercial worm farmers use grains!

Nice job Larry, you've got some beautiful castings working there. A couple of notes that may be of interest, the 5 gal buckets can work great for anyone, but they're only about 3/4 sq ft of surface area so only about 3/4 lb of worms in each bucket for their optimum production. Also, the Worm Chow is great stuff but at over $2 a lb...with worms eating 1/2 their body weight a day (some say their entire body weight) a lb of worms will cost you over $30 a month to feed! Yikes!

@tvanbrown11 жыл бұрын
It's a great supplement, just add a little in like you've been doing, but it would be hard to raise worms solely on that stuff unless you're buying wholesale and turning a lot of volume in a short time. Just make sure that you're feeding those Alabama Jumpers "grits" instead of just plain corn meal! LOL! Keep up the good work!
