I haven't tried cooked chicken, but my crabs LOVE unseasoned, rare beef. I've tried strawberries and bananas several times, but they don't seem to care for it. They don't seem to care for steamed broccoli or raw carrots either, however they'll eat those veggies in the form of baby food. I never realized scavengers could be so picky!! They do love apple, and they also love popcorn (popped in coconut oil, no salt or butter)! Peanut butter is their once in a great while sweet treat, and they're crazy over uncooked quinoa, millet, and buckwheat (not so much chia seeds). Oh, and worm castings. They love that, too. Thank you for these videos, I've learned so much thanks to you!
@CrabCentralStation4 жыл бұрын
Yes they love all those things! I think the pickiness just depends on the crabs, some love one thing some hate that thing! But universally they all love worm castings and green sand for sure! @CrabCentralStation3 жыл бұрын
Yay! I'm so glad to hear this! We usually mix up a gallon of saltwater at a time, that makes it super easy to measure. You just need 1/2 cup of instant ocean per gallon of water. The great thing about Prime is that you can't over Prime and hurt the crabs. You need two drops per gallon. For your four cup pools, just put one drop in every two days. You can use a toothpick to poke a small hole in the foil seal of the Prime bottle to help you only get one drop. Also, don't be alarmed, Prime stinks like rotten eggs.

@CrabCentralStation4 жыл бұрын
There’s not an exact set time period to wait. Since you have only a few options you can feed it every day if need be, it’s better for them to have as many options of foods as possible rather than just one because you’re trying to rotate them. Once you get some more options try to rotate them as much as possible, introducing a variety is best. Make sure to feed all of the food groups and they will be healthy! We go over nutrition more in our Hermit Crab Food 101 video!
@jessvitz61934 жыл бұрын
Also I was wondering if you give them bone meal and if you do where do you get it? Bc I found out that Espoma (the brand that the Greensand that you recommended is) sells organic bone meal but I’m afraid to give it to my hermies bc it’s used for gardening
@CrabCentralStation4 жыл бұрын
It is only bone meal, but the thing is that since it’s processed as being intended as a fertilizer it does not need to meet any safety standards. These bones could be from significantly sick animals, chemically euthanized animals, etc. While buying fertilizers can be a way to save money, there’s a trade off in different processing that has unknown outcomes on animals consuming them.

I have a question. How do you know if your crabs are eating the food you put down for them. My daughter's crabs, Nugget, Blueberry and Hermie don't show us any signs of eating the food other than popcorn and coconut flakes which they absolutely love?
@CrabCentralStation2 жыл бұрын
Hello Lisa! Crabs are nocturnal and usually only come out to grub at nighttime. If you don’t have lots of crabs, it is hard to tell a difference in the food you put out because crabs take such tiny bites! Trust that your crabs will know when they are hungry and continue to feed them as you are. Some crabs can be really picky, which is why switching foods every once in a while can be beneficial. We find that our crabs especially love smelly foods such as coconut oil cooked eggs (no butter or seasonings) and fish such as tuna and salmon!

@CrabCentralStation3 жыл бұрын
It’s really hard to say because all hermit crabs eat a different amount. As long as you feed all of the food groups then you can really gauge how much you need to feed based on how much your crabs eat. So if you feed a lot and they don’t eat all of it, feed a little less. Then, if you feed a lot less and your crabs eat all of it maybe feed a little more. It’s really a balance

Some of them block the molting hormone which is needed for hermit crabs to grow. If you notice, her hermit crabs are still really small even though she’s had them for 8-10 years. HERMIT CRAB NEEDS Random shells-Petco Hiding spots-Walmart Play sand- Home Depot Sea sponge- Walmart Eco earth- Petco 20 gal tank- petco Heat pad- petco Random shells- need so that if your hermit crab is molting or need another shell they can easily switch. Hiding spots- Hermit crabs want to climb and hide and explore, it’s good to get them places to wonder around. Play sand- safest sand for them to dig and lay in, other sand can be extremely toxic. It can clump up in there gills witch they need to breath. Sea sponge- needed so they can drink/bathe without drowning. If you get a normal sea sponge, it can kill then due to cleaning chemicals. Eco earth- also for them to dig and lay in. It’s extremely helpful when molting there shell. Only use a light layer of this in the tank. 20 gal tank- when having hermit crabs, they get very stressed. In small spaces they get stressed, therefore it’s good to have a good tank. Each hermit crab means 10 gallons. So if you have two hermit crabs, get 20 gallons. Heating pad- Hermit crabs are cold blooded, they need heat. They are used to the heat in the tropical habitat. When you get your heating pad, put it on the back of your tank. This will give them all the heat they need. Keep it at 70-80 degrees. At all times keep it at least to 74. Nothing more nothing less.
@CrabCentralStation2 жыл бұрын
This is all great info! The only thing that could be updated is the sponge! Hermit crabs actually don’t need a sponge at all! They are naturally from the ocean, and are quite excellent swimmers! They have modified gills, and can stay under water for HOURS at a time! Hermit crabs actually need deep and large water pools to live! One salt water and one freshwater! They should be deep enough that your largest crab can fully submerge to take a drink and swim! Sponges actually collect mold in a tank environment and are not safe as water drinking spouts! Check out our video in hermit crab water pools for more!

Thank you so much! I’m thinking of getting one for my birthday but I want to give it a good life! I have watched all your videos, also, for the heat pad, I know you don’t put it on the bottom, you put it on the back, does it stick or Velcro? How would I go about doing that? Thanks so much ❤️🦀
@CrabCentralStation4 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! Another great resource we recommend for research is www.crabstreetjournal.org just giving it to you since I know we don’t have all of the care videos up yet. As for your question, some heat mats come with adhesive that you just stick on the back with nothing else needed. The ones we like don’t use adhesive and we just stick them on with packing tape around the perimeter to hold them on

Either is fine.... just no seasonings, salt, pepper or breading. Fry in coconut oil or olive oil.

Boiled shrimp is fine also ? And should I let it cool off or put straight in tank
@CrabCentralStation2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Boiled is good, always cook shell fish! It cools down pretty quick so it should be fine but if you’re worried you can let it cool

How many time would you say they eat normally?
@CrabCentralStation4 жыл бұрын
Most of our crabbies eat every night. I definitely see a molt cycle in the eating habits though. They bing eat before and after a molt. Then pretty much pick at foods a little each night. They love to forage for natural foods a lot. For example; leaves, moss, millet, bark, cuttle bone, snake shed, green sand, worm castings.

I prepared a similar meal to this after watch your other video on crab food. I have two medium sized crabs and they dont eat the food fast enough and it ends up molding. What should i do differently? Btw I loved the editing in this video, it made me laugh! :)

They are social animals living in colonies of 100's in the wild. They need at least one species buddy to thrive.

Can you feed hermit crabs baby food
@CrabCentralStation3 жыл бұрын
You can as long as it’s just a pure formula with no preservatives, sugars, salts etc. A good ingredient list may read: mango, strawberries, banana. The only thing about baby food like this, is that because there are no preservatives it goes bad quickly
@amandacudworth3 жыл бұрын
Wondering why you cook the meat? Obviously it wouldn't be in the wild ...are you worried about some kind of contamination?
@CrabCentralStation3 жыл бұрын
Mandy Thames, you are full of AWESOME questions, I LOVE it! Everyone reading these will gain knowledge through your questions 😊. You are correct that in the wild our hermit crabs will not encounter cooked meat. You are also correct in the reason we suggest cooking it - we don't want to bring harmful contaminations into a closed environment. The ONLY type of meat that MUST be cooked for this reason though, is shell fish. Any other meat can be offered to your crabs cooked or raw.
