Wish I had these on line supports yrs ago. Severe Crohns 37 yrs..10 surgeries..all water high output ostomy. Every complication there is, fistula, abcesses, sepsis, organ failure, life support x 3, infusions, picc line for TPN for life, kidney stones, short bowel, anemia, perforated bowel, skin issues, blockages, N &V, compression fractures from the steroids lost 5" n much more. Lost my job, house, car. It's a nightmare. Constant pain. I pray no one has to go through this. I've clinically died 3 times. Depression n suicide thoughts in the past. I have strong faith n know there is a purpose for me still being here. Ty for advocating. I was in the med field too which helps along navigating hosp n Dr's. When I was pregnant I felt the Crohns subside. But I've only ever had remission for 5 Mos with Remicde then became allergic, anaphylaxis twice. Ty for a place to talk about this. Keep the faith n thank God Zak is so supportive. Love your channel. Sorry so long.

I am sorry that you’re struggling. I am currently going through a bad time with my health, and I really appreciate how you share honestly and try to be optimistic. I can’t express how helpful it is to me to just hear from you. It reassures me that I’m not alone and the bad times don’t last forever. I really hope to reach a point where I can follow your example in doing things to improve my quality of life to be satisfied even with chronic health issues. Thank you for sharing. Truly, you say what I need to hear without even trying to and it gives me hope. Even knowing that there will always be medical stuff to deal with, I feel inspired to make the most of my life because you show us how it can be done. ❤

I agree with taking the iron supplements. I too am a pescetarian, but even when I was still eating a little bit of chicken my doc. Would put me on iron from time to time. It helped me with my energy. If you have to eat some meat to keep healthy that’s ok. The vet I had for my dogs, was a vegetarian and she was a GI specialist (for animals) and she said people are meant to be carnivores and to be a vegetarian you have to be extremely planned and careful about what you eat to make sure you get the balanced nutrients that you need. Congrats on Lily, your brand new niece. What fun birthdays Zack and Lilly will have 🎉

Hey Maggie! Congrats on being an auntie for the second time! When you meet with your new GI consider discussing talking to a hematologist about your iron levels. A GI really isn’t the best specialist to analyze bloodwork in this situation. It makes no sense to say he didn’t want you becoming dependent on iron infusions if your body isn’t retaining iron. You might just need a jump start to get to the normal range for your body to maintain a normal level. You might need to try different supplements to get there but my experience is supplements themselves won’t get your iron sats in the normal range. I also eat lots of scrambled eggs, quiche and salmon to help supplement my iron but I’m not sure if your diet allows eggs. I wish I could eat a vegetarian diet but Crohn’s devastated my colon to the point where I have to eat a fiber free diet. Hang in there!

I’m sorry you’re struggling so much. I went through a similar situation recently. I decided to have a jpouch made and with my temporary loop ileostomy, I lost a ton of water and got a blockage, and needed to get fluids 3 times a week after school. I just had my final reversal and I’ve been having pain, and became very sick again. I became nauseous and started losing my vision and muscle movement. Called my surgeon for 3 days and never got answers. Finally went to the ER and learned my sodium was so low I was about to have a seizure! I also tested positive for cdiff, without a colon! So things have been absolute chaos lately, and I understand having so many questions while going downhill.

It’s not you being crazy at all. I don’t have an ostomy bag but I have plenty GI issues. All the signs, symptoms are there and Dr suspects (or suspected) Carcinoid Syndrome but because my labs looked normal for the most part (my iron very low as well) he wanted me to change my diet and take supplements. I kept being passed around to the point I’ve just given up. I know if I eat I lose it so I don’t eat when I’m out. Thank you so much for always being so transparent ❤ You are sunshine in our lives ☺️

Why it is soo difficult to book appointments in the USA? I am from South America and you have the public health system with takes for ever, but you also have the option of the private sector $$$. Here every thing takes months and it is F... expensive. In my country for the same money you have a great service an you can make an appointment within a week. I am thinking to go back to my country just to be able to see a Dr. and make lab tests. I have insurance, but it is worthless if I cannot even see a Dr.

My iron saturation was 7 and my ferritin was 4. Hemoglobin was 15. My hair was falling out, I had zero energy, had shortness of breath… so I was given an iron supplement to get iron sat and ferritin levels back up to normal range. Once that was accomplished hair loss stopped, energy was back, and shortness of breath no longer an issue. That’s my experience. There are also iron supplements that are designed for better absorption for people with gut issues. So follow your instincts, like you always do. You’re not wrong on this. Also, I was a vegan and when the gut issues started I dropped 25 lbs in 2 months and my kidney fell into pelvis (cause: rapid weight loss). I went back to chicken and turkey just to sustain myself. So I understand you going back to meat. It is what it is.

Thank you so much for the update and I will follow your progress with interest. Like you I have been told that my lab results are good even though I have felt awful. The map is not the territory and doctors should appreciate that. I wish you luck with your iron supplements but there is also the option of buying iron infused water that is very easily absorbed. We have a product here in the UK called Spatone and I am sure you will have an equivalent in the US. The water is sold in sachets and can be bought over the counter in pharmacies. This product was recommended to me by a specialist who added that taking iron every other day rather than every day has better results. Take care Maggie, thanks again and I wish you well.

I have a shortened GI tract also and my gastroenterologist recommended Feramax Powder for iron issues. Apparently it gets absorbed throughout the GI tract and not just in certain areas like pills and has the added bonus of not being pills and when mixed in cold water it tastes like grape Kool-Aid. Its also not an animal byproduct and you can decide your dosage based on how many scoops you put in. Definitely look into it. It works really great for me.

I’m 88 Ibs and 5ft and tiny frame like you I completely understand! My goal is 95 but I’d be happy with 105 but I’m trying to be realistic Having a home medicalized is awful mine is currently like that. I have been chronically ill since birth and have a lot of different things going on. Feeding tubes, a port-a-cath, I manage all of it by myself it’s a lot but it’s also all I know so I’m used to it. I’m a fan on iron infusions, I can’t take it orally. I have gastroparesis and I aspirate on reflux which is literally killing my lungs. I have a j-tube for formula, hydration, meds, etc. and a g-tube to drain my stomach. You should try to find someone to get the iron infusions, I know in the USA you can just go to different doctors right? I may be wrong, I’m in Canada we can’t doctor shop we get who you get it’s a process to switch.

Congratulations on the birth of your little niece, and on Zak's birthday, too! I understand about the infusion. I wouldn't want to do mine at home either. I have one done every four weeks for my rheumatoid arthritis and I look forward to meeting up with the nurse there and chatting with the one or two other patients in the infusion room. We get snacks and watch TV shows or music videos. That's been my routine for about 15 years so far. I hope you gain the weight you want. I also have diverticulosis, so I understand about vacillating between special diets depending on how our "gut" feels. We have to go by our "gut feelings" (pun intended) because sometimes doctors don't agree and confuse us, while we pay the price for their ambivalence. I think you are right to err on side of caution. I think you need that iron supplement, at least for now because it seems not eating red meat deprived your body of iron. I eat a small hamburger made of grass-fed beef once or twice a week. Good luck with your diet.

I take supplements from time to time, to try them out, when the doctors aren't helping. All I know about iron is that iron from red meat is absorbed in a less regulated way (by the body) and faster, and that iron from vegetables is absorbed slower in a more regulated way. That's what I've read at least (heme iron versus veggie iron). Good luck with the iron supplements!!

Ohhhh the iron irony! Before my first infusion, I was in the ER for liquid output (not osteomy, I don’t have one) for about 6 months straight and they couldn’t help me. Then about a month later I was in the ER for crazy heart feelings and was diagnosed with sinus rhythm tachycardia. The next day I had my first ever GI appointment and he was like “so what are we doing about your iron???” You know this level can cause these loose stools and the tachycardia?” I’m like oh, well I’m on like my 15th different iron supplement to try and I just started it…hoping it helps! He said there was no possible way I could supplement my way out of the situation I was in and let my PCP know that this was serious. But I had been to a hematologist who said I was “fine”, the ER said I was fine… It’s not fine. My poor PCP has the worst time ordering my infusions…I’ve been needing a new one for like 4 months now and I’m sleeping about 11-12 hours a day also!

Listening to your body, is the right decision. For whatever it is worth, I agree with the iron supplements. I wonder if there is such a thing as a timed-release iron supplement? With nutrients running so quickly through the body, one tablet at one time might not be adequate? (I have no idea, just asking the question.) I would imagine that blood tests happen more regularly due to IBD so be sure that whomever is ordering the tests, iron levels are measured. Keep track of levels yourself, unless all tests are already being consolidated onto one health site. While HIPAA is a valuable tool, sometimes even with signed releases, physicians do not share findings. On a less medical note, congratulations on a new niece and not having to remember another birthday 😉!

It's crazy how underestimated iron deficiency without overt severe anemia can be in the medical world. It's as if they just don't believe it is a thing, and it can be so disabling. I have had iron levels read "undetectable" and still be sent on my way by doctors saying everything was normal. Many times. At which point I usually am so fatigued I pass out everywhere and anywhere, am so dizzy I can barely stand and have absolutely no cardio reserve to walk or go up stairs. At some point I found a GI doc who was quite alarmed and immediately ordered IV infusions ASAP more than once over the years. Recently I had to move and she was able to treat me for a while but at some point had to let me go and I have had a lot of difficulty finding another physician who will take this seriously. My new doc told me that she would prescribe iron infusions even tho my hemoglobin wasn't 7 and that I would have trouble finding an infusion clinic that wouldn't laugh at me. Turns out infusion clinics were very concerned that I had not been treated earlier. Many doctors just do not believe thst iron deficiency needs to be treated unless you hemoglobin drops below a nine or so. Anyways, I managed to get infusions figured out, since apparently I do need them every now and again, and they help tremendously. I hope someone can figure those out for you, you should feel so much better afterwards.

I too have to eat chicken and meats along with my fish. Instead of a 15 minute time frame I get at least an hour before I have to run to the bathroom. Eat what you can, eat what you enjoy but also eat what your body needs to survive.

Another food You might want to consider is Chicken liver. Because Chicken Liver is high in Iron. But if You want to still stick to mainly a Seafood Diet You might want to consider eating Mollusks. Like Clams, Octopus, Cuttlefish, Oysters, Mussels. Anchovies and Sardines are good sources of Iron as well. Shellfish has Iron but not as high as the Molluscs. Herring, Tuna, Mackerel and Pike . Oily Fish has higher amounts of Iron. Plus eating Seafood provides one Omega-3 Fatty Acids . But, yes I totally agree with You eating Beef and Chicken and support You doing so. If that’s what Your body needs to have at the moment. Your Health Must Come First before ethics in this. Ethics are fantastic but they shouldn’t come at the expense of One’s Health…. ⚛️☮️🌏

Have they checked your Ferritin Level along with your iron level? My doctor said my other blood work was all good but I was feeling so weak and tired so much. My daughter who is a nurse, said to insist on getting that iron & ferritin checked. Sure enough, I end up being anemic and had a iron infusion.

@@LetsTalkIBD Ok. Mine was 11 which is at the lower level of Ferritin. Bless your heart Maggie. Having Crohns is no picnic. I am 73 and was diagnosed in my early twenties with Crohns. Before that they diagnosed me with ulcerative colitis. I have been on Apriso (masalimine) for a long time and it has been a God send. Been in remission for quite awhile. Saying a prayer for you Maggie. 🙏🏻💞

Truthfully, you just need to take care of yourself and eat what makes you feel good. I hope eating meat really does make that difference that you need, so why not give it a go? Like everyone here I want you to feel good and healthy, and bc every IBD patient is different we each have to decide what foods work for us. I think you are doing the right thing by adding iron supplements, and I can’t believe that doc was gonna let it go. My doc got on to me recently for low vitamin D bc I had stopped my supplements. I went off them bc everything was being reported normal for my last few appointments, but….Sigh. Back on them again. 🤷‍♀️.

Naturelo seems to make a reasonably healthy and well rounded whole food vitamin. Please check with your doctor to see if they would be right for you.

I know you have a nursing background and likely know this, but just thought I’d throw this out there. My Iron is always low and I don’t tolerate iron at all orally. I learned that I need to ask for my ferretin checked. I am still not sure exactly how it all works but apparently iron back-ups or building blocks or reserves depend on ferritin. Last time I had this checked bc of the issues my ferretin was completely depleted even though my iron #’s were just below the threshold where they say, not really a problem. Also just a thought how is your potassium. Even though I was receiving fluids, I was still having very low potassium levels unknowingly. The symptoms were very similar to dehydration but at at one one point they were so low, I blacked while driving. Not safe! But had felt no different, “ than my normal” . Knowing you probably know all of these things and are checking them yourself really I’m just wanting to reaffirm to you that you are not alone. IBD is so complex! All the pieces and keeping them all in line is a FT job. Hang in there and know that you’re doing fabulous! I wish I could approach it all with the same calm collected manner you portray. And CONGRATULATIONS on you’re new niece! Happy Bothday to Zax and your Niece! Amy

Do you ever get muscle cramps when you’re dehydrated? Like in your hands or feet? And if so, do you know something to relieve them (apart from fluids, obviously).

I've had gastric bypass so I take bariatric vitamins (lots of iron specifically) because of the malabsorption that comes with it. I wonder what makes bariatric supplements different; if they're actually easier to absorb? And I wonder if that would be helpful to anybody with less absorption going on, not just weight loss patients?

I know everyone person with chrohn is different, but beef and other red meats are know to make chrohn systems worse. My mother wasn't able to eat beef with getting sick to her stomach, so her doctors told her to stop eat red meat and just eat chicken and Turkey because there easy for people with chrohn to digest

Heavens I’ve never heard of people acquiring dependency on iron infusions! Various drugs yes - but where’s the literature on iron infusion addiction?
