I've never been to Mississippi...haven't even watched any videos or looked at Google Street View of anywhere there before, but the image I have in my head is just this depressing, downtrodden state that adequately represents the old-timey deep, DEEP south! At least Georgia has a major metro area in Atlanta, but Mississippi's largest city is Jackson........ Atlanta's a very queer-centric city too (probably the most in the South), so that sticks out for me as a reason you might consider there. Other than there, the only truly progressive areas I see in the Deep South are maybe Charlotte, Tampa, Orlando, and of course Miami (or all of South Florida).
