There’s something problematic we need to address… the very nature of things being “problematic” and how manufactured controversy is used to market otherwise mediocre cinema.
Nowhere is this more perfectly expressed than the recent HBO Max movie, ‘The Witches.’ In the film, a dark fantasy comedy based on a Roald Dahl novel, Anne Hathaway plays a witch with claw-hands and a few missing fingers. A few angry tweeters were angered that Hathaway’s character bears some resemblance to people with split-hand syndrome (yes, really).
Here’s the kicker, that film would have gotten very little attention if it weren’t for the “controversial” Hathaway hands. It’s unbearably boring, the characters are terrible, and the effects are garbage. By being outraged at something minute like this, we’re giving media and filmmakers undeserved attention.
But this isn’t to say we shouldn’t be sensitive or seek to correct historically racist and grotesque depictions of minorities and underrepresented backgrounds, like Mickey Rooney’s Japanese landlord character in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s.’ It is only to say that we shouldn’t be upset at actors playing characters with different backgrounds in an artistic way, which is what acting is all about!
Marketers will only respond to what’s working, and if we continue to be perpetually aggrieved at the slightest things, we’ll be creating a system and incentive structure that might make the problem worse. Sometimes the best (and easiest) thing to do is to change the channel or not consume something we dislike. Instead of being outraged, we should simply choose not to take the bait.

@@KnuckleHunkybuck This is the unfortunate truth. People *naturally* recoil from the deformed. We need to learn to look beyond the horrifying, and accept each other for who they are. One can be physically deformed but still have fantastic character. The flip side of that coin, though, and one can make the case that "The Witches" is dangerous for this reason alone, is the reinforcement of the idea that someone with horrible character will look horrifying too. Some of the most evil monsters in history were (and are) charismatic and handsome.

I think that the main problem is that most of the journalists in the first world are the kind of people who are good at nothing and have no real way to contribute to society, but really feel like they are the messiahs of social consciousness or something. They see something they doesn`t confirm with their beliefs, write about it with obligatory mention of how it hurts poor *insert some social minority here*, present it to other journalists to show how wonderful they are and keep that huge circlejerk going while not doing anything actually useful.

I've tried to share this point of view with other people but they are so deep in the outrage mentality that they simply don't want to hear it. I'm from Brazil and here there is a comedy group called "Porta dos Fundos". In the end of last year they released on Netflix a Christmas Special filled with, obviously, "jokes" directed towards christians and the figure of Jesus. I put under quotation marks because it's obvious outrage bait that a lot of people are quick to bite and give them free publicity. That is usual for them for a long time. People got angry about the jokes, and other people got angry about those who got angry in the first place and then everybody talked a lot. There was legal action into play, trying to censor it, and even a attack with molotov cocktails on the group headquarters. That was so bizarre (and convinient?) that some questioned if it was not manufectured. They got a lot of views because there was people that would watch anyway and also those that only came because of the controversy, to artificially and automaticly hate it or to love it, based on the ideas and views their group want them to adopt. I feel that the same thing happend to the game The Last of Us 2 concerning some story decisions and character models. I hate what Disney did with Star Wars. It made me sad that I'm no longer the target audience for the SW movies now. So I won't give them money and atention. I have a deep dislike for SJW mentality and politic correctness. And I hate when they hijack things that people like only to insert their agenda, disregarding long-time fans and the things that made it great in the first place. I get angry but does not fill the outrage bubble giving them free publicity. I simply don't watch it. There are people that like, so leave it to them. If it's bad, it will be short-lived, but if you take the bait, it may grow and live longer. If it dies quiclky maybe they will drop it and other people can pick it up and help it return to what it was before. (Maybe that is what is happening to The Mandalorian) Not everything has to be about you and make you take a stand, pro or against it. You are not a mirror of the world and the world is not a mirror of you. Free yourself.

I love this type of politics, as opposed to the more mainstream right and left. A basic premise, do not regulate the market, any issues that arise should be dealt with through societal change; government intervention is not the solution. Funny, In Japan, no one was outraged by the casting of Scarlett Johansson. The themes of the source material deal with self-identity and the blurring of artificial and natural bodies. Even Mamoru Oshii, in an interview with IGN, defended her saying "The Major is a cyborg and her physical form is an entirely assumed one," The name ‘Motoko Kusanagi’ and her current body are not her original name and body, so there is no basis for saying that an Asian actress must portray her. There's so much superlative language used to describe controversy. "Thousands OUTRAGED at the depiction of Y in X" is used instead of "Some complaints about the depiction of Y in X". And then the persons being interviewed about the controversy describe it as if it is the most grave offence ever committed. Everything is always "disgusting" and "unacceptable" not "could have been portrayed a bit better" or "not the best depiction". Objection is turning into a binary, either you're totally fine with something or you're spitting feathers over it. There's no space to be just "a little irritated" any more it seems. You can't just roll your eyes or grimace a little, you've got to be blue in the face with rage. I think we need to re-learn the art of being a bit annoyed at something, all of us, left and right. Yeah, Y in X is not great, and if asked I might voice my objection, but it's not worth me going on a Twitter crusade and a bilious -blog post- article on Medium. Just a little roll of the eyes, an "oh, for fucks sake..." under your breath, perhaps a little rant to a friend or significant other, and then move on with your life. Don't get me wrong, there are certainly some things that _do_ deserve outrage, but there's so, so much that doesn't, so many mountains made out of molehills.

I think this touches on the outrage regarding much of the stuff trump says. I've been told that his (or someone close to him) use of the term "Kung flu" is inherently racist and is causing violence against Asians in America to rise (sent to me along with an npr article that says as much). Whether or not that's true, does it make the problem better or worse by putting a magnifying glass on the situation and sensationalizing it, making sure that many more people see him use a phrase that "gives a platform to racists?" Wouldn't it be better if fewer people were exposed to this information so fewer people would be "emboldened" by his racism?" By their own logic, making a big deal out of it would almost necessarily make the situation worse, wouldn't it?

People in Hollywood saying "fans have become entitled" is kind of a redundant saying because as Zachery once said "you bet your darn right we're entitled". I work at a job that I hate, If I pay for something, I have an expectation of it to be worth my time and money. If it's of poor quality, then I'm gonna voice my displeasure. I don't pay for something I know is going to suck or insult their primary target audience. "Toxic fandom" really is one of the dumbest phrases to come out of the internet in recent years or at least one that is abused to no end. Most fans who take issue with your work are not toxic people who "don't like change", fans generally want your brand to be the best that it can be. People in charge of such brands really do need to know that there is a difference between legit criticism and actual harassment. I along with many other people invest in stuff that I'm a fan of like 007, DC Comics, Star Trek etc. and have certain expectations or them. If I get more shitty products like "Die Another Day", "Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey", or "Star Trek: Picard" and less products of actual quality like "Casino Royale", "The Dark Knight" or "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", then your primary target audience will go somewhere else to invest in.

It didn't even exist as an official word as recently as 2021. I saw an article about it on the BBC and I was like 'wtf is this bullshit ableism?!' And I looked it up and it wasn't a word. I would recommend getting into anime. Production culture in the anime industry churns out more shows in a wider array of genres, and the ridiculous woke backlash doesn’t quite reach into the anime community like it does in Hollywood. Despite the “Japanese cartoons” stigma, plenty of anime are quite good and carry thematic elements just as deep as any western story. I would suggest a Death Note for its themes on human nature and the nature of justice (far better than the botched Netflix adaptation), and Psycho Pass, which is a look into a world where crime can be predicted and fair trials cease to exist.

While I only know her as Natasha from the MCU, I do know she’s a popular actress and any movie would want to have her to boost sales. Canceling her because she isn’t Japanese (which I believe was actually a point of the character itself) is just people whining who wouldn’t have seen it anyway to act like their opinions mean something. Also, she was supposed to be playing a trans character in a documentary kinda movie that wanted her as a star power boost since it was already gonna be a tough movie to sell. The perpetually offended bullied her and the production team cause they wanted an actual trans actor. Johansson stepped down, they couldn’t find a trans person with the adequate acting chops, other parts of production pulled funding since Johansson wasn’t attached anymore, and now that movie is probably stuck forever in production hell. So instead of that trans person’s being told by a high ranking actress, it’s now shelved indefinitely because the perpetually offended can’t see how their actions ruin everything.

We have an empire. The polarization results from the fact that centralized, aggrandized authority turns any society into a struggle for power. Talking about how movies are made and marketed is interesting, and you're making valid points, and that may educate some viewers, but even if certain social segments, like Hollywood or Madison Avenue, stopped playing to the polarization entirely, it does nothing to address the root of the problem. Also is it even possible for artists and marketers to "play neutral" when members of the public are increasingly tribalized and polarized, and many are aggressively pushing the idea of attacking the uncommitted or neutral on the grounds that "You're either for us or against us..." The fundamental problem is that those with political authority, and those who are invested in aggrandizing political authority, are pushing an agenda whereby the political sphere, the segment of society presumed to be empowered to dictate coercive, non-consensual associations, is usurping decisions about more and more of what have traditionally have been consensual associations. That's what is polarizing people. When more and more of our association choices are being usurped and are presumed to be made by the decisions of coercive authority, then nobody can afford to allow their own "faction" to lose control of the coercive decision-making system. It's a destructive feedback loop that doesn't end until "the throne becomes way too hot for anyone to sit upon" and then the society collapses, and people reconfigure their society or successor societies along governance lines "which seem more likely to effect their safety and happiness." Hollywood and art are symptoms, not drivers, of the process.

I mostly agree, particularly insofar as the core of polarization is the centralization of power and the struggle to control that power. That said, I do think Hollywood *is* a driver as much as or more than it is a symptom. It's a primary cultural influence, and while of course artists respond to culture and political conditions, they also create them.

The only thing that I would've complained about the appearance of the witches is that they're not what was described in Roald Dahl's book. They got the baldness and having no toes right, but in the original novel, the witches also had large nostrils (to sniff out children), long fingers/nails (a full five fingers, not the amount in this film), and blue spit. see, you missed the most important and damaging aspect of this - normalization and dismissal of "outrageous" things. Much like when you KNOW you are looking at an advertisement, eventually "outrage" and emotional responses will only be looked at as a marketing tactic - meaning something ACTUALLY terrible can be happening, and people will be so eroded and numb to it due to the overzealous nature of corporate marketing people that they will literally not care. The extended memetic effect of this kind of behavior is REALLY not good.

My main issue with the movie, is that the original was still solid and did a great job with the source material. it even had Jim Henson directly involved for goodness sake. To me, the bigger issue is the "New-Washing" (if I may create a clunky term) of old-yet-solid works, by greedy studios looking to cashing on some trend, holiday, etc. (particularly, when they don't seem to be ADDING anything of value or uniqueness to justify a remake in the first place. Personally, I think remaking The Lion King in "live action" was dumb and unneeded (and perhaps a bit disrespectful), but at least you can maybe argue they created an entirely "new" thing, in that it plays very differently than the original (albeit, with less emotion, in this case.))

A funny idea for a simple exercise occurred to me. Go to your local library catalog, and look up "Mein Kampf" and "The Communist Manifesto" -- and see if you can check out a physical copy. Now, if Adolph Hitler and Karl Marx can *still* voice their opinions to this day, despite the horror that these political opinions have inflicted on humanity in the 20th Century alone, why shouldn't we be tolerant of speech that *literally* isn't nearly as bad as Hitler's and Marx's? My line in the sand? Any viewpoint, no matter how vile and unpopular, should be expected to stand, so long as conforms to objective rules of decency -- eg, no swearing, no porn, no ad hominems, no doxxing, etc -- that are established beforehand by the platform in question. (And the standards of decency can vary from platform to platform, depending on what standards the creators are willing to stand by.)

Thing is, they already adapted this book into a film once before and it didn't do so hot. Got a cult following but it was a box office failure 30 years ago. I don't know what they were expecting with this version. Plus, Angelica Houston was the Head Witch in the 1990 version. You can't top that.

To this day I laugh about the whole "Whitewashing" debacle surrounding the live action Ghost in the Shell. Even the Japanese were excited about SJ in that role as she was a perfect fit for the role as Major. Sadly, as your whole video points out, the live action Ghost in the Shell was a flop because they did a terrible job bringing the Anime to life. Those fans of the franchise had a problem with how weak they made the Major through most of the film....by the time she becomes part of Section 9 she is this badass woman cyborg hacker....in the movie they make her STRUGGLE HARD and that killed it for me.

There are endless ways to be a victim...I'm not a religious person but it seems like that's religion 101 when it comes to the idea that life is full of suffering and death, but the pursuit of an ideal (like the concept of god) is what allows you to move forward. Without these ideas all you have are people attempting to tear everything down and work towards hell - an equally valid ideology, but it leads to an endless suffering.

"Where is that line for you?" For me it's no longer liking an artist/creator/performer etc if they rubbed me the wrong way and doing what I can to not have that person be a part of my life. I've left fan groups, unsubscribed to channels, and carried on without ever feeling the need to run people through the dirt. I'm always willing to talk about my experience from my perspective, but I'm never going to discourage people to stop being fans if they don't want to.

Some of the campaigns I can understand like with anime adaptations, it’s best to go with Asian actors and not leave out the Asian influences. Ghost in the shell is a good example b/c the original story is heavily Asian inspired and deals with Japanese criminal Justice system specifically. Trying to westernize something like that will always fail

Appreciate that you stayed to the end. Fwiw, I think the difference is 1) the emotionalism inherent to the response, and how capable the critic is of articulating a meaningful point vs. anger; and 2) the totalitarian quality of the response - ie. are you demanding the artist/creator bend to your preferences or face threats and whatever other harm you can visit on them, or do you simply say, "I don't like this, it's bad, and not for me". A good example of the difference to me is Red Letter Media's critiques of Star Wars and other movies vs. the Vogue articles you often see that claim a movie is "problematic" and the filmmakers should be ashamed of themselves/removed from their roles.

To answer your question, the line for me is consistency. There's no reason, as you said, to go back to a time where Mickey Rooney played the Asian landlord (although I believe it was his star power and comedy chops more than racism that got him selected for the part). The hypocrisy I see now, which you didn't address in your video, is the selective outrage nowadays. For example, the same people who are upset about Gal Gadot playing Cleopatra even though she fits the part don't hesitate to play the victim to anyone pointing out the inconsistency of casting Jodie Turner-Smith as Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's wife. When confronted with their hypocrisy, they say it's okay because either non-white roles have been historically played by white actors in years past or a non-white person was cast in a white role in the past. As far as I'm concerned, if the person fits the role, their DNA shouldn't matter. But they should fit the role. I enjoyed Dwayne Johnson as Hercules because he fit the role, even though Hercules wasn't a combination of sub-Saharan African and Samoan. In fact, his race didn't even enter my thoughts when I saw it. For Wolverine, Hugh Jackman is about a foot too tall, but he otherwise fits the part perfectly. As he bulked up over the course of the movies, it's almost possible to believe the comic was drawn to fit him instead of the other way around. But if they'd cast Dwayne Johnson as Wolverine, I would have had a problem with that too.

Little to no effort is made to produce quality content that viewers will pay to see from these particular content producers. Pushed and contrived outrage flooding the social media space is all part of the strategies to build up the "earned media" - good term in your video. Victimhood/outrage society will end: I'm optimistic this trend will end soon society is gradually getting tired of all this political/identity outrage. Most of this will media garbage will be ignored and the industry will consume itself. Aesop Fable: "The Boy Who Cried Wolf": people are fooled for a while and then it ends.

A valid point well made. I may be in the minority here, but I didn't mind the Ghostbusters reboot film. It was mildly entertaining, which for me is enough for some films. Not all films are meant to be great works of art that stand the test of time.
