Feiyu Tech G5 vs Karma Grip

I spent some time with both of this highly rated gimbals. It's important to note these were based on what I was looking for in a gimbal.
UPDATE 2018: The G5 died at just under a year of use. Feiyutech support is terrible and they do not stand by their product. I reverse my review of this gimbal. I sold it for parts on eBay for $13.
UPDATE: The Karma grip IS NOT considered "splashproof". According to the Karma "Let's get started" manual. On page 11, there are instructions on assembling the Karma Grip. One of the warnings clearly states: "WARNING: Karma Grip is a sensitive instrument. To prevent damage, do not expose Karma Grip to liquids, submerge in water, or subject to vibrations or shaking."

As far as the noise issues are concerned, there are two quick fixes. When outside of the grip the holes on the skeleton frame do not line up with the microphone holes on the Hero 5. Using a drill they can be bored out to a slightly larger size to expose the microphones. When using the Karma grip the side door needs to be removed which for some reason totally destroys the sound. The solution here is once the Hero 5 is placed in the Karma grip, take some blue-tac and cover up the opening left when you removed the side door, this replicates the condition you had when the door was in place. Once it is sealed remove a circular section of the blue-tac above the mic, exposing it. Works a treat, no sound issues.

Hi Dan - oh man, in terms of stabilization, the Karma Grip clearly does better. I was watching your side by side footage comparison and on the Feiyu Tech you can see micro-jitters the whole time! For sure better than no stabilization, but... you are buying a stabilizer for a reason :) Thank you for the video!

I totally agree about the micro jitter. I can see it as well, but I can adjust the way I walk with it in the future and use my arm to help me stabilize it. I was having a hell of a time making the choice because the Karma was more stable and even felt better. The deal breaker is that the Karma had severe horizontal tilt. On my last test, it did it about 4 or 5 times. I had to continuously restart it. Thank you very much for watching my video and commenting. I do appreciate it.

Geek Detour That horrizon tilt on the Karma makes the footage worst than the little jitters on th G5. That horrizon tilt makes the footage completely unusable in my book.

I wondered if anyone noticed that. I have 3 dogs and had to do a lot of editing to get them out of the video. I recorded a really good "take" and noticed the dog was hanging out at the back door. I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but the gopro karma grip does need to be calibrated for it to work properly. I picked up a karma grip last month and didn't calibrate ituntil last week. It is a night and day difference performance wise. It is much more responsive, level, and smoother when properly calibrated.

You can calibrate it and the problem is solved for Karma...I really have watched a lot of videos comparing all the gimbals and to me the Karma grip is the smoothest. I also want to be able to attach it to my pack via the locking ring....Those two things are the selling point for me. Its also not that difficult to adjust audio in editing software, much easier than adjusting crappy video that is...Lots might care about audio but to me an action cam is primarily for video anyway...Just my thoughts! Good job on the video.

Nice job on the video! As is, it looks like the Karma is more stable. Did you applying the electronic stabilization of the gopro, or maybe adding something in post? Maybe that would iron out the microjitters. Also, do you know of any tethers or straps that would work with the Feiyu? Just something I could tie to my wrist in case someone tries to snatch it.

I'm glad I could help. It really was a tough call because there is such a solid feel to the Karma Grip. You definitely dodged a bullet getting the Mavic. The Karmas were dropping out of the sky before GoPro recalled them. I recently upgraded to the Phantom 4 Pro and really like the camera quality.

Just returned my Feiyu-tech G5 and let me tell you why. 1) Noise. At 3:37, you say you can solve the gopro hero 5 / gimbal noise issue by mounting the gopro the other way so that the microphone on the side nearest power button is not facing the motor noise, however this is not true and I know because I've done this only to find the audio issues remain. There are three microphones on the hero 5: right, left and top. So it doesn't matter which way you mount the gopro hero 5 because there will always be a microphone pressed against the motor. I also tried blocking the microphone by covering it with rubber, but this also doesn't solve the issue. Changing the audio mode to wind only dampens the noise by a tiny bit but the gimbal noise is still loud and annoying. Have to remember, there are 3 microphones and they are quite sensitive. When you are holding the G5 handle horizontal as one would when filming (which also eliminates the center of the mount hitting the top of the pan motor) the roll motor is facing the top microphone that is located right next to the record button. 2) pan follow is very slow. I could only change the follow speed for when I hold the gimbal handle vertical, where following is done by the pan motor; when you lift the handle past a certain point and make it more horizontal then the following happens from the roll motor, and that follow mode is quite slow and I upped all settings in the app but it never sped up. This slow follow is really disappointing. 3) weight. this is heavy. it is 280 grams before adding the gopro hero 5 counterweight and before installing the battery. By comparison, gopro says their karma grip handle alone is 244.6 grams (including battery) and the stabilizer is another 242 grams (no counterweight required). Compare this to the Zhiyun Rider-M wearable gimbal at 180 grams (excluding battery). you can easily add a light pole to that and be under the weights of the Feiyu tech and karma grip. Perhaps the G5 is lighter than the karma, and it feels solid, but it also feels like i'm holding a brick after holding it at a tilted angle for 8 minutes; adding it to an extension tube makes this pain worse. Do I even lift? apparently, no. 4) app settings need more features: what is the point of having the same controls on the app that you have on the stick if you can't set some timelapse settings? They really need a timelapse menu where you can tell it to go from one pan/tilt/roll angle to another over a certain time frame. 5) the 1/4 in screws, one opposite the joystick and another at the bottom of the handle, are great additions and expand mounting options, however the heavy long handle makes it difficult or odd to mount to things like a chest mount or a helmet. 6) I noticed a few annoyances when using the G5. Lock mode automatically unlocks when the pan and tilt motors are aligned. Pan too fast and sometimes the gimbal will follow in the opposite direction I want it to follow. holding the handle at a tilt will often confuse the gimbal as there is a cutoff point where the follow mode changes from pan motor to roll motor, and if you have the handle twisted to the right or left when going from roll motor follow to pan motor follow there will be an immediate move in the pan motor follow and you will lose your subject. Practice makes perfect. While I don't have the karma grip, your karma grip footage shows hardly any gimbal motor noise on the hero 5 (not sure how gopro was able to do this) and also shows a much smoother video when walking thru the woods, albeit random horizon tilt). It would be awesome for Feiyu to reverse engineer the karma grip's noise suppression and include it in their next version of the G5. it would also be great if gopro allowed us to manually adjust each of the three microphone's levels with the ability to turn off each microphone.

The gimbal noise is definitely an issue. That was the main reason I decided to use the Hero 4 Silver with this gimbal. If the Hero 5 was my only GoPro, I would have picked the Karma. Turning the power button mic away from the motors combined with using "the wind only" did make a significant difference with mine (I did a video comparing the modes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2e3dZx_bN-Hebs) but I would only use the Hero 5 with it if I was forced to by wet weather. The gimbal panning is a bit slow, but I learned to twist the grip prior to making a turn. Most of my filming with be walking so I can anticipate my shots. I'm hoping Feiyu Tech can update the firmware to correct this so I don't have to do anything extra in the future. I read (and saw) a few reviews that mention the issue of motor sound from the Feyu G5, especially when Hero5's speaker hole is touching one of the circular motor housing on the side (refer image at 2:06 in your review). Did you notice that problem? Some reviews suggested that you can overcome the issue by fitting the Hero5, upside down (so that the speaker hole is away from the circular support/motor housing). I am about to decide on Feyu G5, and would appreciate of someone can throw some light on this issue.

Hmmm interesting to watch. I just got the G5 (my first hand held gimbal) and I wasn't overly impressed with the stabilised footage. I can see from your side by side comparison that the karma is more stable but the battery issues and sound is annoying. At this point I think I may keep the G5 or return it and get the Evo (which also has sound issues but is more stable than the G5).

Luke Mallinson I agree the Karma Grip stabilizes a little better. I noticed jitter in my G5 video... however the my Karma grip had to be restarted 4 or 5 times during the testing due to the horizontal tilt. I should have stated that in the video. I really like the Grip, but too many factors pushed me to the G5.

cool video! try to make them shorter :). also the karma gripo is not! splash proof! if you want to get rid of some of the motor sound from the g5 just off set it away from the motors a little. it will make ur motors work harder and kill the battery quicker but it does work. I recorded about 4 hours of battery having the hero 5 sit about 3/4 of an inch away from the motors. that also enables you to charge the gopro directly from the gimbal,you have to buy the proper male to male cable from amazon. sorry for the long comment. but finally I would like to add the the hero 5 doesn't allow u to shoot for a longer time if you u use a lesser quality than 4k,2.7k,1080p or 720p the same amount of memory will be used. I hate that part about the hero 5. on the osmo I get about 2 and half hours in 4k or about 3 hours on uhd and on 1080p I get about 5 hours from a 64gb card.

I don't know, my first impression is that the micro jitter gives a more "handheld" view. I mean the karma has good stabilisation but its a bit too perfect and smooth for "action" footage. Feels too cinematic.

Hi, concerned about the audio noise with the Feiyu Tech and Hero5, I'm getting hi motor noise on playback even with wind suppression on. I'm even considering using a piece of rubber and place it between the gimbal and Hero5 to stop the excessive noise.

It's bad. It's one of the main reasons I chose to use my Hero 4 Silver in the G5. I did a comparison video to show the difference if you want to check it out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2e3dZx_bN-Hebs I moved the microphone near the power button away from the speakers and enabled "Wind Only" mode. That seemed to suppress it, but not eliminate it.

I did notice that if I moved the Hero 5 away from the motor it flipped the camera upside down on the gimbal, I wondered if this might burn the motor out as it's out of balance. If I am not wrong the Hero 5 has a built in digital image stabilization, that's why the result karma + hero 5 looks more stable....although not horizontal (!). Personally I would choose the Hero 5 + FY G5 combination

It does have built-in stabilization, but it was not turned on during the testing. I did find the Karma Grip provided a more stable platform, but there were too many other factors that made me choose the G5. After a recent trip to Central America, though not as bad as the Karma Grip, the G5 developed a tilt as well, and calibrating hasn't solved it yet. I was a little disappointed, and am going to contact Feiyu Tech about it. All my DJI drones have a horizontal lean as well. Maybe all gimbals do? I know how to correct it in post production but you usually will some screen size and sharpness, because it requires straightening and cropping your video.

I think the problem little tilted image is quite common and difficult to avoid, I have got it with my G3, except if I totaly stop moving while powering it on, and also with the dji mavic pro when a bit brutal with the commands or if the wind is strong... Personnaly, the trigger for the G5 would be that it is spash proof :-) yes...it is always possible to correct it in post prod...but what a loss of time !

Hi everybody can you please give me some suggestions on how to verify with videotape and a go pro hero 4 silver my 1299S when it intermittently and randomly and unexpectedly stalls out? Every time i take it to the dealer they said they can't duplicate the problem and Ducati of North America video taped my bike with no problems. But my 1299s still stalls out on me in congested stop in go traffic all the time and when I feather the clutch and drive between 0 to 15 mph on the street or freeway. However I'm an amateur and I just purchased a hero 4 go pro silver camera do you have suggestions on how to mount it to the 1299S gas tank ? I'm concerned with losing the camera what type a suction mount the go pro hero 4 camera? Should I use the 1 leg big suction cup or 3 leg suction cup or mount the camera on top of my helmet I want to hear the bike shutting down in my video, and I want to show myself stuck in stop n go traffic on the freeway or the bike shutting down on the street as I slow down to make a turn or come to a stop. Or mount camera or under my chin mount? Or on top of helmet mount. I want to see the road speed displayed on the dash to verify the bike stops when I drive 0-15 mph. I want to show the lights going off when the bike shuts down at night when I drive at night. I want to show me pushing the start button and going into neutral gear to restart the bike in the video. What I should I use and what can I use in case the suction loses its grip to keep the camera from damaging the motorcycle and the camera in case it falls thanks advance for everything. The dealer said prove the 1299s is stalling out with video verification because they claim everything is checking out A ok on the computer test sheet with Ducati engineers and Ducati video tape that they won't show me What would you do? Thanks in advance for everything. I have adobe creative suite I don't know how to use it for editing any suggestions?

In the long run, the G5 is not a good product. It bricked in under a year and FeiyuTech was useless. Buy the Karma.

I had a Karma grip that was damage when my worthless Karma drone crashed. After researching, I'm going to give the Feiyu G5 a try as well as a DJI Mavic drone. While I've been impressed with my GoPro Hero 4 & 5, I'm totally unimpressed with Karma grip and the junk drone. Did I mention that the Karma drone is garbage?

I agree, Dan, and thanks for your review! The battery only gave about 15 minutes flight time max. And the controller was very apt to lose signal from the drone at very close distances. I flew it straight up and it lost signal and returned at about 700 ft. I flew it straight out over a mall parking lot so not to have a lot of interference and it lost signal at returned at about 100 yards. Last week it lost signal and flew into a tree and crashed. I'm replacing the drone with a DJI Mavic and the Karma grip with a Feiyu G5 that I just ordered for $169 from GeekBuying.com. I'll let you know my thoughts on the Feiyu G5.

Does battery life really matter that much when you are limited by the battery life of the GoPro itself? If your screen is always ON, it's life is even worse. Unless I'm missing something???? EDIT: Is there a newer G5 model? Feiyu's site: www.feiyu-tech.com/index.php/Product/detail/pr_id/77.html shows it attached to the opposite side where it might power the a Hero 5 Black as well but there's no chance for an external mic! Unless that can be done "somehow" with the G5?? Ah, I see now that it can be mounted either way.

I see the benefit of the external battery for the gimbal the same the external batteries for the GoPro. If either die, you should have fully charged back ups ready. So a dead gimbal or dead camera should never be a problem with backup batteries on hand.

I believe Karma has the manual correction you have to physically position which I think is quicker than pressing button 4 times on G5. But like Geek Detour said stability is way better on Karma as well. I'm so confused I really want Karma but people always say better things about all other gimbles :( why can't they just make Karma Grip Black version all new and improved haha

DarkAngel The Karma is awesome. You can't go wrong getting one honestly. I haven't been using my G5 much lately if I using my Hero 5. I find the motor noise more and more distracting.

I have Hero 4 so yea only downside is I would have to spend extra on harness :( as for battery, I think it's a good idea to carry external power bank that way both get charged at the same time where with g5 you will need spare batteries for go pro itself. I'm just trying to make more reasons to get karma hahaha but I see why you kept this one. I just hope nothing goes wrong with it as I heard some people had issues with karma but I think ill pay extra for extended cover.

SergioRuiz Yes, that was a huge thing to me. I'm not sure why GoPro would go that route, because you can swap the GoPro batteries out if you drain them, but have to stop whatever your shooting to recharge the Grip. On a side note, I have 2 batteries for my G5, but the battery lasts so long I never had to swap them.

Karma way more stable. And they both have really bad audio. Karma is muffled and feiyu-tech you hear motor noise. So either one your screwed

Robert Castillo I was less screwed with the Hero 4 in it. The sound was 10x's better than the Hero 5. if I could go back in time I never would have "upgraded" to the Hero 5.

I really wish GoPro could release a Firmware Update allowing us to piggyback the USB-C External Microphone adapter at the bottom of the KarmaGrip. I don't think the Karma Grip's sound is unusable as ambient sound, but for vlogging/speech a Lavalier Mic would make it just perfect.

+KLProduction Kris L I turned the "image stabilization" off during testing on my Hero 5. Though the G5 won out overall, I did find the Karma Grip produced better stabilization. After months of using the G5, I'm a little disappointed in the extra effort it takes to get really smooth shots.
