I was in the audience. It remains one of the very great musical experiences of my life. In those days a high powered laser would fire a continuous lazer beam of light about 0.5cm in diameter from the back of the pyramid stage towards Glastonbury Tor 8 miles away. By the time the laser hit the Tor it would have expanded to illuminate the entire Tor Tower which is about 15 metres tall. Imagine what that would have looked like from a distance! There was incredible freedom to do things like that in those days. We took all that for granted....they were wild and great days. I've loved Fela Kuti's music ever since. Thank you Fela and thank you Michael Eavis.

@@vnessa33 Dude it was totally anarchic. People would fire rockets at police helicopters. A lot of people would simply be naked and high on the drug of their choice. There was a huge sense of freedom and an alternative way of living....after a week of Glastonbury Festival people would have difficulty re-adjusting to life outside the festival. The young people who now attend Glastonbury have no conception as to how totally off the grid it was. It was like an alternative universe for a week. No health and safety...it was completely insane. People driving Mad Max vehicles at full speed through crowds of people on acid..huge wooden figures being burned in the middle of crowds of totally out of it 'hippies'...a 24/7 week long party...it was insane.

I knew Fela right from my youthful days but never cared to listen to his songs because of his appearance on stage...barely naked and smoking Indian hemp. The very day his death was announced, marked the begining of my love affair with his songs and personality. That time, I was a Youth Corp member serving in his home state of Ogun. That day he died, all the media outfits in the state had nothing to present for their viewers and listeners but only Fela songs and his biography. I just had no option than to watch his shows, and carefully listening to the lyrics, I gradually started noticing sense in his songs. I fell in love with his songs & admired his personality since that very day he passed away to date. He was an emancipator, human rights activist, philanthropist per excellent, a hero, a mentor and a role model...all built-in him! We truly missed a legend!

Fela had such a great ear for melodies and musical rhythms. His compositions are almost classical in their grandiosity, expressing a theme or motif with jazz-like variations, his polemical lyrics aimed at nigerian and african political conditions. WORLD's Greatest SAXOPHONOST...Fela Anikulapo Kuti came to the world to 'rescue the down-trodens', and entertained me and you.
