Joseph Maurice Ravel 1875 -1937. A French composer, pianist and conductor. He is often associated with Impressionism along with his elder contemporary Claude Debussy, although both composers rejected the term. In the 1920s and 1930s Ravel was internationally regarded as France's greatest living composer.
Both Debussy and Ravel were masters of conjuring up a dream world in their piano music. This lovely orchestral arrangement by John Rutter taken from Ravel's 'Sonatine' originally composed for piano, makes perfect musical sense for the the penultimate movement of that work.
On this video a seasonal offering, as Spring in all it's subtle glory creeps slowly onward in the wake of Winter's bleakness. The sense of awakening in this lovely music seems to fit the video's theme.
