I was cuddling with my cat and she fell asleep. I got up to go do something in the house and she awakened when I was out of the room. She gave the most heart rending cry because she thought she was alone. So after that, I never left the house without waking her up to say goodbye and telling her when I would be home.

As a cat-owner, whose life has taken a turn due to corona, having to leave the house for a week or two (it wasnt planned this way!), i wish the later would REALLY be an option. That's the thing that bothers me the most about leaving my cat: That i cannnot communicate when i will be back, or, in fact, that i will be back at all. It breaks my heart every time. I leave some dirty laundry out on purpose, so at least my smell keeps lingering longer. And it seems my cat is counting the days by not cleaning itself. It's a true conundrum - it deserves better than me, but i cannot give it away, either.
@sheila13664 ай бұрын
@@mrscruffy8045 I used to leave my bed unmade for my cats with the covers jumbled up so they could crawl under if they liked. My usual trips were for a week so that is what I would tell them. They had a regular (professional) pet sitter so I would tell them that she would be by in the morning. I think they knew when I would be back because the day the pet sitter didn't come in the morning, they knew I would be home in the evening. I think with cats, routines, even routines for trips were important. 😻

Mistake #8 actually happened to us. We weren't out of town either. It was getting caught in a storage closet behind some camping gear. It had been the better part of a day since I had last seen my cat and I was wondering if I was going to find a sick or dead cat, but when I turned that closet light on I heard a weak, forlorn meow and as soon as I moved the sleeping bag he exploded out. Close those closet doors.
@scottp3004 ай бұрын
They love those closets. Basically, any place they know they aren't supposed to be, or don't get to go into very often. My cat is so damn stealthy and sneaky, I go around literally every two or three hours and figure out exactly where she is, just in case. Have found her in a bedroom or hall closet several times. Just follows everyone around, and waits for them to open up a door, then dashes right in quickly.

I left my cats 2 years ago in the street. I came back to visit after 1 year, and 1 of them came and then refused the food and ignored me. The other ate. The 1 cat was so attached to me, she behaved like a puppy, always blocking my path so I wouldn't leave at night, after I fed them. I'd typically spent 2-4 hours nightly with her. Sadly I was forced to leave the feral kitties, because they refused to be indoors, there was too many of them, and I had to leave and found myself several cities away, thus unable to go see them much at all. I had 7 house plants when I was given a cat that had been abandoned in an apartment where I live. I researched which plants were toxic to cats, and gave 5 plants away. I use non-toxic bug spray and I gave away a number of candles that had tea tree oil (neurologically toxic to cats) in them, with a warning to the person I gave them to... he swore he had no cats. I always leave blinds up when I leave the apartment, tell my 'baby girl' I'm leaving and I'll be back soon, and I leave a light on in the living room so there's enough light in the kitchen for her to see her water and food dishes and to find the litterbox (cats need SOME light, they do NOT actually see in the dark). However, I have to remind myself to get off the laptop and play with her, I get focussed on what I'm doing and zone out. 8-(

Get "door pinch guards". They are pieces of foam that are kind of in the shape of a "C". You put them over the edge of the door so little kids can't get their fingers slammed in the doors. They also keep doors from completely closing so pets aren't separated from their food, water, or litter box. Mine are solid white, but are also available in all kinds of colors and patterns. I keep them near the top of the door so I really don't notice them. Now I don't need to worry about my cat getting shut in or out of rooms.

Yes, my cat would break the plastic blinds to create a rectangle she could look through. I replaced the blinds with wood. She pushed the slats to the side to create her rectangle. When I switched to just curtains, I made sure to have an open seam for her to get to her preferred spot in the window. She figured out there are a couple open seams and ends, more ways to get there, so she is happier with that. In the back of the house is a flower box window, AKA the cat turret. That is hers. She did let the other cats use her windows. I just put up shutters on the inside that don't close for easy access.

The male is friendly with them, and they often sleep together, but doesn't play as much. We adopted them together specifically so they could support each other. The mother and kitten will of course get along and the mother can teach the kitten how to be a cat. The male was separate, but from the same house; not very close, but familiar. The shared anxiety of moving to a new home helped him bond with the other two.

Under some sinks there is a hole big enough for a cat to crawl through. Many cats have become trapped in the walls this way. Please check to see if your sink has that, and if so, block the hole. Remember that cats can get through a hole that looks much too small for their bodies.

Yes!! This happened to my kitten the night we brought him home! He didn't get trapped in the wall, but he was trapped in an empty recess beneath the cabinets. We were only able to get him out because my Mom brought over her kitten (his sister) and the minute he heard her meow, he came out. It was very traumatic for everyone.

I sew and my cat needs to be in on it. She will put scissors threads whatever right to the floor. Or really anything I leave on the table, sometimes things she has not ever seen. She is very attached to me like no cat I ever had!

My advice is to have more than one cat that way they have a companion when you're out. When I come back home after work and I open the front door three cats are waiting for me just inside and they all look so happy to see me because I will spend 15 minutes to half an hour playing with them before I feed them. And then a bit later I will play with them some more. Then later in the night I become their bed and they all sleep on me.

1. Boredom…needs toys & snacks to keep busy. 2. Remove objects cats might knock over-especially breakables! 3. Water!! The longer Kitty is alone, the more water in various places they can reach. 4. Food!! Timered or key-coded collars to access their food. Or cat sitter. 5. Hairties: cats love playing with them, but can harm themselves-hide those! 6. Eco-friendly?…spare a thot for kitty-they suffer if you shut off the air tempering. 7. Strings: Kitty can get hurt by playing with strings, laces, cords. 8. Doors: insure closet doors, etc. are either closed, or blocked open.

I’ve never left my Bobo alone over night,and I will never do it,I would feel like the most horrible person alive if I did.If I have to stay over night at the hospital some time,my mother who only works 4 hours a day will be staying in my apartment with my Bobo so he doesn’t have to be alone(we have talked about this just to be on the safe side since I have some health issues)Bobo loves his grandma and because she is the only person he is comfortable with(except from me)I am only comfortable leaving him with her.Bobo is a rescue I adopted,he was sent from one fosterhome to the next for months before I adopted him(no one else wanted him when they heard that they couldn’t pick him up…)so he doesn’t trust people at all,he always looks at me first if someone wants to say hi to him,and if I say it is okay he will go and smell their hand and maybe let them touch his head,but it is only my mother who are allowed to pet him more than once.It is my responsibility to make my Bobo’s life as good as I can,and I try the best way I know to make him feel safe and to let him know that his feelings matter and that he will get a say in everything that includes him.We live together,this is Bobo’s home too. I love my Bobo,no one is more important to me than he is.If Bobo has a bad day and just wants to snuggle,I will cancel my plans for the day and stay at home in the couch with him❤️🐈⬛❤️ Im sorry,this got a little bit off topic but it was about my cat😊

We have had a cat, our first, for about a year and a half. Now, I can't bring myself to be away for long because I am constantly worrying about (ah... and missing) her. She is a really sweet cat and incredibly well behaved. But cat being cat, there is no telling what she might get up to while we are out for long periods of time. Anyone here feels like this, too?

I think the water concern is overblown, as long as you leave the toilet seats up. I freshened up my cat's water dish religiously every day, yet I only once ever saw him drink out of it. It was far more often the case that I'd walk into the bathroom and see him pull his head up out of the bowl.

This may not apply to all countries, but here in Europe by far the most dangerous thing to do when you leave your cat alone for a few hours or more, is when you have leave windows open in a tilted position. I'm not sure how to explain this but we have windows that can open in 2 ways: wide open (=fine) or in a sharp angle that only leaves a gap open at the top. Some cats have tried to jump or climb out of that gap, getting stuck, and some of them died because their intestines got squeezed... So when we leave the house we make sure that we don't leave any windows open, except the one where they can't possibly jump onto (and no, they really can't).

Have two cats. Keep your glasses in the cupboard. When I had single cats and was working I put the radio on so they’d hear music and voices talking. If you need to leave your cat for a long time board them at the Vet. They’re well taken care of. My two mostly sleep so when I come home after an errand they didn’t even know ai was gone.

My sister just recently got a black cat. As I am writing this, it's on my bed. This cat follows me around everywhere I go throughout the house. She bites be though, and I don't particularly like that very much. There's even times she draws blood whare she bites me. Not wild about this, however what am I gonna do? Then I can't sleep very well when she's always in my bed when I want to go to bed and get some sleep.

I leave on trips where I’m gone for several days. if I’m gone for a long time I have to board them. It breaks my heart. I live in a rented house on a working farm. They are occupied all the time. They can come in and out through the door. The house, despite being only 295 ft.² approximately, have their own places in the house. Multiple high shelves and beds just for them. But when I’m gone the cat hair in my bed says it all. They are free feeding on dry food. In the morning and in the evening, they get half a can each…. With one cat preferring dry food all the time. (Hey it’s a cat… they are individuals) Besides, there are multiple feed troughs for the cattle, supplied by my landlord for his well cared for cattle. This is where my cats love to hang out and supplement their diet…. As well as my little dog, who thinks she’s a cat.

Everything breakable has long since been knocked to the floor. The cat insists that we are not allowed to have any vases, candles, photo frames or other ornaments, especially on window sills or radiator covers. Doors to upstairs are routinely to be closed at all times to prevent terretorial spray marking. Water bowls are ignored at all times, only running water from the drips of the outside tap is acceptable
@annaolsson54412 ай бұрын
In Sweden the law is that you have someone come and feed and hang out properly at least twice a day and it should be someone the cat knows and trusts ... So cuddles and playtime is on the menu as well as fresh food and fresh water. After 24 hours according to our emergency care hospital without food it is seriously dangerous that also goes for if the cat is not eating.

This guy's first tip (leave them with toys like pompoms on an elastic rope) that thing almost did lose one toe of her. She was playing with and it got around her toe and she was literally hanging on that rope on a higher level of her scratch/climb furniture. Very big luck I was home because it was tied up double around her paw. No way she could get free by herself, I almost had to cut it off.

Interesting. What kind of cat toy is recommended? I know they have different attachments for the wand. I have used stringy ones in the past. Would feathers be more appropriate?
@jakevendrotti14963 ай бұрын
Ours loved and demolished both the string and the feather attachments, but we put them away when we were not home because the feathers and string could both be choking hazards. Probably a good toy that could be left out will be those fuzzy balls for the younger kitties, or something you can manipulate electronically from afar for the older ones.

I have a stretchy line with a stuffed mouse at the end. It hangs in a doorway from a big clip. So she can pull to get any claws out and it bounces away. I also have thick pipe cleaners. She scrunches them up, bats them around, and carries them to different rooms to play with. They are too big to eat but soft, pliable, and strong enough to play with. She used to steal regular pipe cleaners from my craft area but I thought the thick ones would be safer.
