In this four part videoseries we will take a closer look on how to fly a long haul with the Felis 747-200. This flight will take us from Amsterdam to San Francisco using the INS for navigation. In this third part we will take a closer look on the actions during cruise for INS Updating, step climbs, fuel management and calculate estimated time of arrival for waypoints. The video is not flawless or perfect, but I hope it will help you to use this amazing add-on!

wonderful graphics and realism. I flew as a Captain on B747-100's and 200's and I am impressed. This looks like a lot of fun!

Actually...I still have all of my manuals and checklists for the 747 "classics" (100's and 200's) as well as manuals for the old Litton INS's and the Omega's we used to use, (I used the Omega's and early Litton INS's when I was flying DC-8's prior to the 747's. ) Those Omega navigation units were a challenge to say the least and operating them was as much art as it was science ......similar to the early generation weather radars...you had to know what you were looking at It will take some time but I can send you any checklists flows and procedures. I have a lot of stuff about the Litton 92 INS as well. We started replacing the older units with Litton 92's around 1990. They were the peak of the stand alone INS navigation units. They were the first of the ring laser gyros, moving away from the INS Carousels and their electro-mechanical gyroscopes.

11:06. Preoccupied with low priority tasking. The climb and engine performance is the only aspect the engineer would be looking at during the initial few minutes; is ERPL CLMB selected? (no). What performance margin is there between current weight, aircraft performance limit and expected weather during the climb? (not discussed). Cabin pressure and rate are not relevant during a 2 thousand foot step. 1:21:20 During climb the speed lock is not preferred; engine performance limit is sensitive and you don't want the engines hunting a speed and exceeding the EPR limit (not selected). You need to select CLMB.

Excellent tutorial, love it. Would like to see help for adds on that would support any flight such as airports , charts , etc etc. I can't look around the views so it will help to get the adds on for Camera too. Appreciate a lot

Thanks for the kind reply! I don’t use camera add-ons… Just X-Plane 11 default camera system. Charts are just Navigraph charts, there is not a lot to tell about that one I think… Would you like more information regarding charts in particular?

when do I have update the INS? I usually fly US domestic routes with my Felis 747-200.

I don't know if there is a set rule for it, but I try to update the INS when I'm over land with suitable VOR's every two hours.

@@0321Sjoerd oh ok. For me, idk if im doing it wrong, i put every coordinates that my simbrief publish for my route on the Delco CIV-A INS navigation computer. Starting from the SID to the STAR. The only area I need help with in regards to autopilot, is using the ILS landing system. I’m so used to the PMDG 747-400 FMC system where i just pick the SID and STAR and type in the route. Set it and forget it.

Also how is waypoint 5 that you have added for continuation? earlier your comments show that we need to start waypoint 1 again to add rest of the waypoints?

Hello , while looking at the INS unit which is showing the waypoint , the N/E co-ordinates seem to show that the plane is at waypoint 5 which is IDRID ? Your comments saying we are flying waypoint 9 to 1? That means we are at waypoint 9 and we need to update the INS unit to for next waypoints. Please comment. Thanks

Yup, IDRID was waypoint 5 in the first load. We have already passed IDRID (which is over the North Sea) and we can now use INS waypoint 5 for the next waypoint. When you select waypoint 5 the lat/long for IDRID are still in there and in the video you’ll see me overwrite the IDRID lat/long with the Lat/Long of the next waypoint. We are flying from waypoint 9 to waypoint 1. In part two of the series I have already entered new waypoints for INS positions 1, 2, 3 and 4.
