Usually, I listen to a catchy/beautiful song on repeat obsessively for who knows how long. Then, the only way to get it out of my head is to actually play it on the piano, which usually takes an hour or so, in this case, to work out the melody. This might take longer if there are unconventional notes or many chord shifts. From there, after many times playing it, I make refinements, especially in what I play in the left hand, to match certain styles/moods I want to set for each section of the song.
