Coro: Wie der Hirsch schreit
Aria: Meine Seele dürstet 6:19
Coro: Was betrübst du dich 12:07
Quintetto: Der Herr hat des Tages verheißen 15:54

La Chapelle Royale
Collegium Vocale
Ensemble Orchestral de Paris
Eiddwen Harhhy, soprano
Philippe Herreweghe, conductor
Coro:
Wie der Hrisch schreit nach frischem Wasser,
So schreit meine Seele, Gott, zu Dir.
Aria:
Coro:
Was betrübst du dich, mein Seele,
Und bist so unruhig in mir? Harre auf Gott!
Denn ich werde ihm noch danken,
Daß er mir hilft mit seinem Angesicht.
Recitativo:
Mein Gott, betrübt ist mein Seele in mir,
Darum gedenke ich an dich!
Deine Fluten fauschen daher,
Daß hier eine Tiefe and dort ein Tiefe brausen;
Alle dein Wasserwogen and Wellen geh'n über mich.
Mein Gott, betrübt ist meine Seel in mir!
Quintetto:
Was betrübst du dich, meine Seele,

In this music there is a lot of faith in God We can not ignore it. Bach, Mendelssohn, Palestrina and many other composers have incorporated their faith in their music ... we should not ignore it!

@@kittybitts9530 wow so interesting! Do you have some references to this? I noticed that if I listen to this piece (Psaum 42) and that it calmed my heart beats which were arythmic after Covid. After Covid I could not stand modern music (maybe because it has no harmony). Now, my arythmia is a lot better.

One can hear how Mendelssohn is inspired by Bach‘s vocal religious music, as the Matthäus Passion. The piece is in a form of a Cantata but is larger in expressive force and performing ensemble than a Bach Cantata. It is no wonder that this link to Bach‘s Matthäus Passion exists, as Mendelssohn was the one to revive that Masterful piece of Bach, that back then in the beginning of the 19th century was already forgotten. I am amazed by Mendelssohn‘s music and enjoyed singing this piece when I was a student at Tel Aviv University in the early 2000s. Thank you for making it available here!

The choir "Was betrübst du dich, mein Seele," sounds quite similar to the one in Elijah " Baal erhöre uns!". Wonderful music; as someone else has commented, you don't need to be religious to appreciate it.

6 Was betrübst du dich, meine Seele, und bist so unruhig in mir? 12 Was betrübst du dich, meine Seele, und bist so unruhig in mir?

Herreweghe is The Best in Bach interpretation! His Mendelssohn oratorium interpretations (for example Paulus, Elias) is also very good and beautiful. This psalm cantata interpretation is not wrong, but the sopran soloist is... the vibrato of the choir is also a surprise... But the Collegium Vocal is one of the best choir. Sorry my bad english!

This work was composed in 1837 when Mendelssohn was 28 years old. At that time Wagner and Verdi were 24, Schumann was 27, and Berlioz was 34. The lovely voice of Ms Harhhy is completely appropriate and compelling, as is the superb performance of the instrumentalists. To cast Mendelssohn's music back to an earlier Baroque style would be absurd. Herreweghe is clearly a master of both styles. Dare I add that vocal vibrato was common in Mozart's time? And even much earlier?

I think the conducter is right (is always right). This piece is just this tempo: only to follow the instruction of the composer strictly could the meaning/beauty of the piece reveal.

Mendelssohn was a better composer than Beethoven, Mendelssohn was a devout Christian and his faith shines through in all his music. I can listen to Beethoven for a half hour, but to Mendelssohn I can listen all day. Beethoven was an angry man most of the time with a fierce temper. And therein lies the difference. No insult, Umatruko, absolutely not, you are so right. God bless you.

I think you're confusing orchestration with composition. If so, I would agree. Beethoven has fairly obvious flaws in his use of instruments, and things are quite often messy and obtrusive.
