Note: As of the latest nightly builds for 0.49, OpenMW *does* have support for complex lua mods and shader support. The vast majority of mods most people will want to use now have a version for OpenMW or another modder has recreated the same concept with a different implementation. There are, of course, notable exceptions. Like Ashfall.

@@Bakanlink I wouldn't know, survival mods aren't really my kinda thing. I also doubt it. Ashfall's predecessor Frostwind is *somewhat* compatible with OpenMW. (You can't chop wood with an axe for example.) Taddeus' Necessities of Morrowind is an older mod with a fairly decent survival feature-set and fully compatible. The problem is that additional effort is required to make it compatible with mods that add new food items and the like (such as Tamriel Rebuilt.) Edit: There is a new simple needs mod called Basic Needs for OpenMW which adds basic exhaustion, food, and thirst mechanics. It requires the development build of OpenMW though.

Idk how anyone could think there's anything difficult about openmw, MO2 is probably the best and easiest to use mod organiser and almost everything can be installed on it. Installing almost everything is the same as modding skyrim or fallout nv and fallout4, and those games are crazy easy to mod.

After spending a ridiculous amount of time with open mw trying to set it up and get it to run well i have come to the conclusion you are better off using the morrowind graphics and soudns overhaul. Its simple it installs, it works and looks better than this, at least it has proper groundcover support and does not destroy perfomance due to groudncover or the idiotic water shaders and draw distance and it has much better mods in it that actually work unlike open mw and you dont have to use open mw's awful content installation ui and you get to play at double the fps , sure it crashes but what is the point of not crashing when the game goes from over 100 fps to 20 fps constantly? Open mw sucks, its a buggy broken unfinished engine incompatible with anything and most people dont use it for that reason.

". . .you can install and uninstall mods in the middle of a playthrough." Holy god. Why didn't I know about this when I tried MW for the first time last year? I just came back after missing the game and have no idea what mods I had installed or how to retrieve them. Basically just said "screw it" and started over. I'm also guessing this is why OpenMW didn't recognize my older saves. Really great information that has me committed to installing the Total Overhaul mod list for OpenMW. . . .if only someone could do a 1 to 1 console UI mod (no idea if that is even possible).

I played through the main story on the 0.46.0 version and while I had to cap my framerate at 30 (putting it higher was janky and I would lose frames in certain areas) the newer version runs WAAAAAAY better. I actually can turn the view distance all the way up and I can also enable actors at a very far distance as well and the game runs great. I'd say especially with this recent release "oldwind" is definitely the inferior way to play without question.

I was debating this for weeks now, since I've only ever truly played Morrowind once (main quest + lots of side stuff) long ago, and I LOVE modding my games. The thing that convinced me the most (in your video, that is) is the distant land & landmass mod support. Quite honestly, MGE-XE was extremely laggy and jittery even on vvanderfell, and having to jump through hoops to make distant land work, only to have it run at 20 fps on my modern rig was... underwhelming. But back then I simply sighed and went with it, because the community told me that OpenMW was "crappy and lacked features". The promise of Lua mods was great, yes, but I don't remember one situation where I couldn't have lived without them. Installing the total overhaul list as I type this!

There's also the fact that it has a VR branch and a Multiplayer branch! You can now co-op with someone in Morrowind (or blame them for all your crimes). For me, OpenMW is the best way to play for many reasons, but crashes are one of the biggest issue. With all the fixes and external programs, I still had to save often and not really enjoy the game because I had no idea when Oldwind would crash. It tore me out of the game and made enjoying it more difficult. With OpenMW I had get used to the fact that it wouldn't crash. Never had it crash once, and I've been using it for years. I have no reason not to use it! Great video and I'm glad someone is talking about OpenMW! Perhaps next it would be good to show off the differences between MGE XE and OpenMW. One major flaw no one talks about is the fact that your shadow supercedes the terrain shadows in the game, which can be a bit jarring. OpenMW doesn't suffer from such a bug. There's the lighting as you mentioned as well, and the reflections on water are far better on OpenMW than they are in Oldwind with MGE XE.

I've been using OpenMW for the past 3 years and I can say without a doubt that it's a way better playing experience than Oldwind. I actually completed Morrowind and its expansions for the first time on a single character using OpenMW. I was never able to do that because the frequent crashes and black screen bug would render long playing sessions impossible. I prefer to play with vanilla-friendly texture enhancers (like intelligent textures), but I'm aware that OpenMW can handle higher resolutions brilliantly. The OpenMW team has hinted at lua support coming in the near future so when 0.48 rolls out there's no reason not to use OpenMW instead of Oldwind.

I'm one year late to this, but it was only recommended to me today by YT so eh. While OpenMW is definitely better from a technical standpoint, its lack of support for MWSE is a deal breaker for many and thus the reason why people (including myself) will never jump ship so long as that doesn't become a reality. Yes, it now has LUA support, but it's still "useless" because it's not the *proper* LUA support that would allow MWSE mods to work in OpenMW.

MWSE-Lua mods are too good to pass up for me. Extra performance is meaningless to me if I'm just not having fun with the actual gameplay mechanics. And lua mods have spoiled the shit out of me. Ashfall being the primary culprit. That being said, I finally setup a base OpenMW installation and have it ready in anticipation of the upcoming lua support. OpenMW is definitely the future, and it's getting closer to being the decisive place to play Morrowind. But it's not there yet.
@rosenrot6871
@rosenrot6871 3 жыл бұрын
This is my exact sentiment right now. Old Morrowind might have it's flaws but so many gameplay and QoL mods that require MWSE makes it hard to pass up on. Also I've found running only a few mods in OpenMW with the distant terrain set to the same cells that I would have in MGE XE (5) yields pretty bad performance. But maybe this new method they've implemented addressed that. Either way, OpenMW isn't the most forgiving on my old Gigabyte 980. Also interesting when Mr. Moonshine pointed out his experience with Skyrim LE vs SE. I've found both games to have stability issues, with crashes being the result of mod conflicts (which will happen on either when having a heavy modded build). Also Skyrim Special Edition ENBs still pale in comparison to how Oldrim ones look, even 5 years later and they still are missing features from the ENB binaries of Oldrim.

These are great points and I would love to switch. But the lack of LUA support is what kills me. I know the openMW team is working on a way to make lua mods work and as soon as that’s implemented I’ll make the switch in a heartbeat!

It's not so much the lack of Lua support (Lua scripting is being introduced in 0.48+), it's lack of a common API between OpenMW and MWSE, meaning the scripts for one cannot be used with the other. As far as I can tell, there are no convergence plans at this time.

@@billhoggett5918 thats the thing. It would be more work to make a compatibility layer than it would to port MWSE-LUA to OpenMW-LUA.

@@icyjiub2228 Obviously, you're right, but the compatibility layer is a one-shot solution that doesn't require the individual mod makers to put in the extra effort, whereas porting the scripts themselves needs doing every time, assuming the mod maker is sufficiently motivated to bother. Unless I'm missing some simple solution that I'm not aware of, of course.

Well, I'd certainly encourage people to use OpenMW. For me, the fact it has a Linux-native version matters as I often use Linux, but it is equally usable for Windows users, and far, far more stable. However, the MWSE incompatibility is a pain, because a lot of very cool mods depend on it. It's not that "Oldwind" is better, just that the unavailability of these mods is frustrating. The other annoyance is that sitting NPCs are a major problem. I won't go into the technical details because they're discussed in the OpenMW development community, but in effect sitting NPCs need to be individually patched to work with OpenMW, putting the onus on the mod authors to make their mods compatible. Most won't, because they either don't use OpenMW or don't have the time to support two separate versions of the same mod. So OpenMW is fantastic, but not quite a fully-fledged replacement yet. Users will experience big benefits but will need to compromise too. Depending on what's important to you, your mileage may vary.

The problem is that most mod creators don't actualy play the game they just like modding it (which is a running 'joke' among them too) so consequently they dont give a hoot about stability or playability what they care about are "cool features that they can implement" or at least features that look good on paper or in a showcase video... Which is fine realy, on an individual level. They should do what they like, and to be fair what they do are sometimes seriously amasing... its just ... well...

Eh i think you're overstating how unstable oldwind is. Also there's a mod that lets you monitor how much memory you're using. It's an inconvenience yes, but the benefit is getting access to some of the best Morrowind mods available that require lua. Also when I first got back into Morrowind I went with witha OpenMW first and installing mods was a pain. I think it took almost a day following the complete overhaul guide on the website. By contrast, modding using mo2 in oldwind is super quick and easy. Generating distant lands takes five minutes at nost. And I don't need to create folders for each mod type, or edit an textfile to add the mod path. Anyway, if alternatives to the Lua mods i use become available on openmw, and if there's an essier way to mod similar to mo2 i will jump back to openmw. It's pretty clear to me that openmw is the future it just needs a bit more time.

Now that i have a steam deck, ive been trying to get the Morrowind to work. After installing Mod Manager and trying the game, the engine just stutters so much loading content, so im trying to use OpenMW since its native. The issue i have now is trying to get my mods to work. Ive tried the MO2 conversion tool to convert create an OpenMW.cfg to target the location of mods, but its only wants to partially detect some mods given all the data files show in OpenMW Launcher. Texture mods arent loading and grass mods are the main indicator in the opening area so ive been dealing with that for a couple of days. I cant find any videos or tutorials on it on how to correctly do the process on linux systems.

My first playthrough was in OldWind with MCP, MGE as an Imperial N'Wah in the Legion, Fighters Guild, Redoran, main quest and finally Tribunal and I loved the shit out of the game but after getting a taste of the way moving the mouse feels in OpenMW and its Alchemy/Spellmaking/Enchanting UI, expanded map window, keyboard-looting and item dropping, it's hard to go back even as a purist. One thing that kills the immersion, however, is OpenMW's lack of rain/snow collision (i.e. rain and snow pass through outdoor shelter) which is a built-in feature (or a mod, I can't remember, it's been years) in OldWind with either MCP or MGE XE . On my seqond playthrough as a tree-hugging Bosmer s'wit, I did have a problem progressing one of the later Hlaalu quests (in OpenMW) because I had somehow received a quest before meeting the minimal rank requirement (thanks Odral), yet Uncle Curio wouldn't advance me despite having more than enough in the favoured skills, which after a lot of unsuccessful experimenting with the console made me drop the game for a year because I feared that other quest-lines might break the same way. Now having decided to play the multiplayer mod, I managed to fix that problem by increasing my rank through the console and everything seems to work perfectly.

Although I also have some problems with gameplay (as someone who cought on to Elder Scrolls around Oblivion and has that as the favourite from the series), my biggest problem with Morrowind was definitely the crashing. My two cents: When I prepared for a Tamriel Rebuilt playthrough in 2020, I ended up using Oldwind. It never crashed on me during 80h of play and back then, Oldwind with MGE looked far superior to OpenMW distant land. It was an easy choice when side by side. But it was 4 years ago.

I agree that OpenMW is the way to go. However, I've been using Oldwind and Oldrim for years and never had all these crash problems and performance issues mentioned in the video. Then again, I didn't install 400 mods. I think 30-50 is my limit for mods. Even if I could install more mods, I can't be bothered because at some point you just need to play the game. I don't have a current install, but if I go to play Morrowind again I will definitely be using OpenMW.
