Felling a BIG spruce with the 661c

Putting the new 661 through its paces by felling one of the biggest spruce trees on our lot. This one was way out of my league (for now), so I'm really just the narrator of this adventure. But I always learn a lot watching the guys do their thing, hope you do too!

It's all the hardwood that is too small or not straight enough for the sawmill. It's really great firewood!

Another Great video. I always ask myself - why that cut? Why not a Notch cut - then Hinge cut then Back cut?

Thanks so much! By hinge cut do you mean a bore cut? If so, it wasn't necessary, the tree wasn't leaning much 🙂

I assume that he uses the traditional cut rather than the Humbolt cut because it is more about killing trees than getting lumber.

You'd be right if we could have fallen the tree downhill, but uphill was the only possible direction to send the tree without breaking several mature maples, which are worth more to us than losing ten inches of lumber off the butt. Not only that, but most of the large spruces in that area had been hollowed out at the base by ants, like this: kzbin.infoSKoNyAtV4Rc Luckily not this one, but we couldn't have known that before cutting 😉 Thanks for watching!
