One of my favorite memories of my father late in life was when he helped me take down a walnut tree that was threatening my house. He was in his 70s and when he came back in, he looked at my mother and said, "Man I really enjoyed that!" Working outside on your property has a feeling you can't get anywhere else! Having those trees away from the buildings will help you sleep better at night!

Greetings from PEI. Boss, here is something from the 2008 Farmers Almanac for Oct 25th. And today was the day , exactly as this describes it: OCT 25th A day of slate and lead, compounded of blues and grays and mixed by a cold, damp wind from the north that rides along the very edge of snow. High time to get things put away, covered up, battened down, and ready for the real winter that this day presages. The winter's firewood is in the shed. It stands in long, head high racks-ten-foot walls that look a little like enormous honeycombs. They take up about half the shed. Today I must see to the other half. I will put away the chain saw, the axe, the sledgehammer, and the steel wedges. I'll hang up the garden tools on their nails or prop them up in the corner out of the way. I'll put the paint cans, gas cans, and coffee cans full of nails and other hardware on the shelves. After the shed is properly straightened, I'll sweep the whole place, clearing out the blown-in leaves, the sawdust, cobwebs, and other dirt. That done, I'll linger for a moment in the pleasurable contemplation of the neatness I have produced. And I will reflect on the effort that happily spends hours tidying a humble outbuilding, the home of mice and spiders, while the nearby house, where the people dwell, remains an unredeemed wilderness, a disaster area. The paradox of household order is that often you make it most effectively where it's least needed.

As romantic as it is to have a cabin nestled closely into the woods, I think it's best to clear a good big patch around them. We had too many problems in the past with branches and trees coming down during storms, and damaging, or almost hitting the old cottage. I'd love to see what you do with the stumps. I think that can be such a hard thing to deal with. At least without big equipment.

Longing For the Mountains There is a place I long to be, A place in the mountains high and free. Away from the routine, procedures and strife, Where one draws nearer to the beauties of life. Where lonely streams plunge to depths below, Churning from summits of sparkling snow; Where the laurel, aspen and lofty pine Remain untouched as in the begining of time. Where the bright red poppies, untrampled by feet, Lift to heavens above, which they seemingly meet; Where the eagle in his domain so magestically fair, Reels by the hour in turbulent air. Where at twilight is heard the voice of the thrush, Whicn leaves me oblivious to the modern day rush. -Carmon F Becker Cheers!

I cut a big native species like that here in Chile a PELLENE. It was already down from a wind storm in my woods. It was roots up and stuck in an adjoining tree. A huge hardwood tree. That tree tried to kill me until I split it into logs. It almost dragged me with it into a swamp and pulled me under water with the freed end. Hard work but good work. My son and I got it done! Good to see you getting your things square also. We are in Spring here now. Love the warm weather. Nice to see your wood shed and green house come together. The garden looks wonderful. Jim in Chile
