Fellini movies made money GLOBALLY . So they knew he was a pretty good investment. Back in the 1970s there were MANy "revival" movie houses as well as ART theatres. So even when the movies "first run" was finished, rentals were still active. But , yeah- they had no problems creating COLOSSAL sets for Fellini's "vision". P.S. You also save a TON of money by NOT hiring "A LIST" stars . Fellini never needed A Listers. HE was the A Lister. So without spending MILLIONS on star salaries: You have a LOT of money for BEAUTIFUL production design and set construction !

What a cacaphonous mess this film was! No wonder Donald Sutherland hated being in it! I'm currently watching the Frank Finlay/Denis Potter Casanova. At least the man takes his clothes off - very nice too - which IS most of the point, n'est pas? Poor Fellini intended his film to be art. Potter (admittedly with Vivaldi's help) achieved it.
