A large number of people outside of the queer community have no idea that Matt Bomer is even gay. He first became famous for a television crime drama called WHITE COLLAR where he played a straight character. He’s actually played multiple straight characters. I think he was the absolute perfect choice for this role very much because of that. He is one hell of an actor .

I am really happy. Because this series is considered a revolution in the film industry! And it elevates queer series to a higher level. It is no longer a story about a high school boy who is still struggling with whether he is gay or not. Or he is worried that his family and friends will hate him if he come out.. A very mature story. The choice of actors is great, Because both are actually gay. And I'm here for it...

@@Imetwurld_ unfortunately not. There are still a lot of straight actors cast in really important queer roles.

I understand your point about queer acting representing phenomenal works like this should also receive the honor it deserves, that's absolutely true. But I think it's more important that this barrier should be broken down, that queer characters should be portrayed by queer actors or straight characters should be portrayed by straight actors. I personally find this separation unnecessary, because it meant that for a long time that outed actors only got queer roles and the roles were often written more badly than well and that was sometimes the end of their careers. Which in turn led most actors not to come out at all so that they could get the good roles. As was the case until a few years ago (maybe even nowdays), they were advised by their managers - actor Tyler Blackburn, for example, talked about it in a very personal video here on YT in 2020 (with jeanine Mason). If the actor really has the passion and closeness that it takes to believably portray a gay character and it doesn't look like he's having to overcome himself or is just scratching the surface, I don't see a problem. Likewise, I don't want gay men to be denied heterosexual roles. Jonathan Bailey did a great job in Bridgerton. Or not? This man can make difference. They cast him for more than just his gayness. Many people can't even adjust their accent for 3-4 sentences. And Bailey films a whole series as a Brit with an American accent. They could have used an American, but they chose him. I also think that Gale Harold did a good job with QaF as a straight man in a queer world over 20 years ago, without having many role models back then and I don't think they had any "intimacy coordinators" back then either. When it comes to Gandalf, no one immediately thinks that Ian McKellen is gay. Wentworth Miller also came out on the side when he was invited to Russia but then declined because the country laws are hostile to his sexuality. Before that, none of that mattered, he was celebrated for what he did as an actor and not what he's doing privately in bed. Likewise the guy from 13 Reasons Why who plays the heartthrob there, I forgot his name. And he was also popular in real life until it slowly came out that he is gay, then the most vicious messages endet up on his Insta. But why all this? Because people are disappointed? This thinking should be broken down. It needs to be normalized that everyone can play anyone - If you're freakin good.

I lived through the AIDS epidemic. What sticks in my memory is in those days we used Rolodex (index cards) to keep addresses. As friends would pass, I’d write deceased and the date on the card moving it to the back of the Rolodex. After many years I was adding a name and I realized I’d run out of room, I counted the cards in the back marked deceased and I had over 250 friends that passed away from aids. I found myself in tears remembering one funeral after the next, remembering how amazing they were, some good friends, some like family. It struck me that AIDS took the best of us, the best looking, the smartest, the most open genuine wonderful people. The people whose happiness and joy just shined. I remember one architect who had only designed a couple of houses, but OMG what talent, and no one will ever know what a great career he might have had. Before anyone feels pity, I consider it a gift to have known them, almost all I can say I learned something from, and an honor to have spent time with them.

I had the same reaction watching the first episode of this. Just gorgeous and its going to rip my heart out. I really like Matt and Jonathan so far, I like their personality dynamics between them, Matt's character a bit more confident, dominant, in control versus Jonathan's more submissive, younger, eager view of things. That scene at the end at the diner and the flashback to them just hugging on the bed was so emotional for me. Cant wait for the rest of the episodes. I've only watched The Normal Heart once but I remember it was very good and very difficult to watch. I saw the film at an LGBTQ+ film festival in my city and Matt was there to do a Q&A after which was really cool. He's just as handsome in person! He was very down to earth and relaxed. Seemed like a really nice guy.

The clubs, fire island, Chelsea Gym, it felt like I knew everyone, from hustlers to hedge fund managers, our greatest composers, writers, the Act Up guys.. everyone. More than half of those men were gone by the mid 90’s. I don’t know if we ever stop living through that into something else. It’s always there, if you were there.

Since he continued to see him and not just for the information, for me he began to feel things but he has been fighting all his life for the position where he is and even more so for where he wants to go so he is very careful.

I have to add, in view of your comment about the impact of the episode, that for older gay men, I believe this will be very hard to watch. While I am 15 years short of the age group in the show, I am old enough to have lived thru the AIDS epidemic, and watched a lot of friends, intimate, and casual, fall during that time. Also, during my first year of being out, gay bars were still raided, and same sex couple could not tough while dancing. It **WAS** a very hard time, but we didn't have any other reference.

Gay relationships (sex) without an emotional reaction were prevalent in the late1970s when I came out in the gay community. I, in my late 20s, was naively looking for love and affection but never got it. The frustration of being used and the other guys expecting me to use them caused me to stop having relationships. Today gay relationships with emotional entanglements can more easily be found thanks to same sex marriage being legal.

One thing that surprised me is that the author, Thomas Mallon, is a conservative Republican. That's not surprising on the surface, as the characters are as well. But I'm amazed that he wrote about the Reagan/Republican administration letting hundreds of thousands of gay men die, which is explicitly called out in this episode, and yet Mallon himself remained a Republican all through that right up until 2016. Marcus says "I'm just tired of going to funerals". I came out in the 90's, only met a few people affected by AIDS during the 80's. This is part of why shows like this are important, unlike a national culture, you can be gay & know nothing of gay history. One person I did meet when I came out gave me the image of, imagine, you go out to gay clubs & know a extensive group of people this way. An unknown disease will kill 2/3 in 18mnths. There was a period where people may not go to a funeral, because they just couldn't handle it, and that was ok, people got funeral fatigue. Other recent shows that make a good companion piece to the 80's part of this show include "Pose", about the Voguing culture in New York in the 80's & "It's a Sin", for the UK experience, written by Russell T Davies & for the Australian experience, the event that would lead to the forming of the Sydney Gay Mardi Gras, "Riot" (2018).

How Hawk is, I can do relate too. I grew up living a life that wasn’t me, because I had too, so I separated my gay self from the rest of me. In doing that, you become a confident player and you live without attaching yourself to any other man. It works, until you actually fall in love with a man. Then it completely destroys you.

This show is gonna hurt my feelings so bad, but I haven’t been this pleased with a show in ages (in that it is high budget, high quality, and clearly made by queer men with ZERO concern or consideration for making it ‘palatable’ to a str8 audience - at least so far)

it’s going to hurt but in the best way. the fact we are getting such a huge show telling queer history is massive. And I couldn’t agree more it feels even better knowing both Matt and Jonathan are gay.

1 second in and I just said, yes. There's no way you haven't seen Matt Bomer before. He's everywhere. Especially on TV. Very icony gay because also openly gay. Married. Kids.... Yes, Hawk is very cocky in a way that you dislike but totally agree about the voice. Funny your remarks, as I saw a comment praising his acting for being able to play a top, convincingly. 😅 Skippy is adorable 😭 It really is a lot to watch him suffer. I wish he'd locked that door and shut him out when he had the chance. Hawk doesn't deserve him at all but he's also his best chance at happiness. 💔 It was fun watching this since I've already seen all 5 episodes so far. Agree with a lot of the things you said including the colour grading 🔥 and the paving. I'm needing all week to process each episode (there are 8) and overcome it before I can face the next one. (I wasn't terribly impressed with the Red W & B film personally as I expected this type of quality and though maybe not as deep, most certainly not as shallow and silly like it was.) So happy this one is out for the world to savour. We deserve this.

@@JackieRossLavender it's true. I myself am always surprised to find out that I've never heard of someone that everyone else seems to know. At times it turns out that I really had never heard of them them. I've just arrived on this channel and saw you react to queer films. I assumed that you've probably seen him though maybe you hadn't noticed. I'm not mad that you haven't and am fine to stand corrected.

Did you say you didn’t know who Matt was? He starred in a tv series and was a regular on American Horror Story. One of the biggest openly gay stars of all time. His piercing blue eyes… Boys in the Band was a stage play and it reads and watches like one but it’s good. It’s not as good as “Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean.”

American movies and series (and most British) are so well done that they cannot be compared to any other country. The cinematography, costumes and music is excellent. However, as a 76 year old Gay, who has had an entirely different life than most Gays, I probably will not watch this film. I steer away from most American gay films and ironically, I am an American. When it comes to Gay films, good or bad, along with most Spanish speaking films, I cringe at how toxic they are and aggressive, and slamming against the wall. They are as toxic as a father in Romania or eastern Europe finding out his son is queer. That's how toxic and ignorant they are. I started watching Asian Gay films about six years ago that did it for me on gay movies from the west. Asian films are not nearly as sophisticated as we are.....BUT....... everything else is there, at least for me. I don't watch for the looks or for the sex or sometimes, not for the story lines. Then what do you watch it for you ask.......watch them and you will see.

I love the fact they use fictional characters with real life characters like they did in Angels in America which the tone reminds me of. One of the most evil persons back then was Roy Cohn who in real life was queer as once can be but despicable. Died of AIDS in the mid 80s but never admitted to having it.
