The old emergency recommendation to have 3 days supply of food, water and medicine is totally inadequate for the scope of some of these climate disasters. I really think it is more like 10-14 days of supplies needed now until a person might expect assistance to reach them. Keeping that much water on hand is impractical....I have an emergency water filter and then always keep a rotating supply of canned food, camp stove fuel, etc. With the cost of housing, insurance, and more of these storms, I think living tiny home style on a trailer base is sounding better all the time. Big storm coming? Hitch up the house (or gas up the RV) and head somewhere else. Migratory lifestyle.

Many devastated areas in the steep mountains of western NC are at an elevation of 3000' to 6000', and the cooler mountain air couldn't hold the moisture. There were landslides up top and massive flooding in the hollows and valleys. The storm didn't slow down; it dumped everything in the southern Appalachians in 24 hours. The Appalachian people in rural areas are from hearty stock, but how do you prepare for 30 inches of rain? Climate Change is here and has been for decades. @joefish4466Ай бұрын
Same goes for certain parts of Vermont which has flooded just like NC/TN, because of the geography. The affected areas are mountainous with flooding occurring in the valleys and people typically build close to rivers in the valleys. Risk assessment will need to change. The same thing happened with "Storm Boris" (2024 Central Europe Flooding), an epic storm. We are all paying for this, so we need to rebuild wisely, because this is going to happen again, real soon.

The FEMA administrator is an idiot or is trying not to insult people for not being better prepared. Tropical Storm Fred in 2021 and Hurricanes Frances and Ivan in 2004 caused flooding in that area. In 2004, over 11 people died from flooding caused by back-to-back Hurricanes, damaging or destroying thousands of homes. Beyond this is The Great Flood of 1916, which was one of the most catastrophic floods in Western North Carolina history, as this event was triggered by two hurricanes in July. The French Broad River and other waterways surged to record levels, submerging Asheville and surrounding areas. Dozens of people were killed, and the damage reached millions of dollars. Another flood, The Flood of 1940, was a major flood caused by a tropical storm in August, which ravaged areas across Western North Carolina. Significant rainfall led to landslides and extensive property destruction. These storms have happened in the past and will happen again.

Every community needs to have an emergency plan in place..staging places, registered medical personnel. BUILDING codes revised , enforced, & readjusted. No, you cannot depend on the FEDS.EVERY RESPONSE IS LOCAL. ULTIMATELY, RELY ON NO ONE BUT, YOURSELF. BE PREPARED, HAVE A PLAN, USE YOUR HEAD.

You say nobody could be fully prepared. YOUR JOB IS TO BE PREPARED. If people who post youtube videos could think outside the box well enough to help fellow citizens, what is your problem? Tractor trailers are bringing in supplies. Private helicopters are rescuing people and delivering supplies. Even mule trains are taking supplies to the needy. They are donating their time and resources. FEMA did NONE of this!! The National Guard is still waiting for orders. Their choppers are still grounded! Maybe you should organize a committee to discuss what is necessary. Y'all could meet monthly. Have coffee and donuts. Or you could do your job. Temporary bridges could be built IF you just let the National Guard actually do what they are trained to do. Hell, even the Coast Guard could help evacuate people. Be a leader instead of a politician. Delegate and turn capable people loose.

@@lindapereboom, This hurricane, fueled by high Gulf water temps, was exceptionally fast moving and instead of expending much of its energy on the Florida coastline and breaking up a bit, it blew right through Florida and up into the Carolinas, where it slowed down and expended much of its energy in the form of heavy rain. Living in a valley surrounded by mountains is always a recipe for disastrous flooding. I live in eastern Connecticut and the western side of my state suffered just a tiny taste of this a month ago ---- there was extensive flood damage in Litchfield County, but it pales beside the destruction in the Carolinas, Georgia and Tennessee, and those areas are much more remote and harder to deliver aid to.

If you look on a map with a terrain view you will see that the Blue Ridge Mountains rise up out of the Piedmont to the south and east of Asheville, NC. When major storms come from the southeast the clouds rise up to go over the mountains and dump tremendous amounts of rain. This storm dumped over 20" of rain in much of the mountains of northern GA, SC and western NC. The steep mountains then shed all that rain into the narrow river valleys and you get what we got. High winds + saturated soils = downed trees = downed power lines. Roads washed out. No power, water systems destroyed ...

By the way, I spent my boyhood summers at a rustic family cottage along Long Island Sound (originally built with wreckage from the hurricane of 1938). It's only on 4 foot posts and amazingly is still standing after Superstore Sandy, although my family no longer owns it, which is probably just as well because I don't think we could afford the taxes, or the insurance, on a beachfront property. The cottage isn't worth much but the land it sits on is worth over a half-million $.....

If Putin gets Ukraine and all of their army's weapons and manpower under his control, he'll have even more power. Hmmm, who should he invade next??? Isn’t the big question in this aftermath, “how do we engineer buildings and communities to withstand the worse?” And not just how to save money on structures so corporations can make profits? 😊 lumber and gypsum is NOT the answer. It’s time for new engineering ideas. It’s time to invest in new engineered infrastructure. Or keep rolling the dice and spend money on reacting and responding.
