It has been a heavy week. We got hit with the remnants of Hurricane Helene as the Asheville, NC metro area and took on over 15 inches of rain in 24 hours. My family and I fared well, but others did not. We're super lucky.
Use the link in the video or a non-profit of your choice to donate to Helene restoration efforts. Better yet, bring sandwiches and coffee to a hospital, firehouse, police station, or group of utility workers.

Apparently my very unimportant neighborhood has some important power lines running through it, and so again, we lucked out. From here, I'll try to use every resource at my disposal to help the people around me and then move on to the trails. We don't know the extent of the damage yet, but we're sure it's going to require a huge effort. Thank you all for supporting my platform. I'll do all I can on your behalf to use it for good.

EVs get 80-140MPGe, the terrible ranges and massive batteries are because fossil fuels are far more energy dense than lithium battteries, the best lithium batteries have an energy density of around 2mj/l and a specific energy of about 0.9mj/kg while gasoline is 32-35mj/l and 45-48mj/kg

@@CoffeeCrazylarge watershed, more rain than anyone expected. plus because it was raining before Helene got to the area, major drainages were already blocked.
@orulz1
@orulz1 Сағат бұрын
@CoffeeCrazy three things: 1. Mountains are cooler and when humid air reaches the mountains and cools down, water condenses out in the form of rain (and lots of it) 2. When rain falls it flows down hill to the valleys where streams and rivers are. In the mountains, valleys are steeper and narrower so the water flows deeper. 3. As mentioned in the video, there was a big regular rain storm about a day before Helene hit so the ground was already full of water and the rivers and streams were already running high even before any rain from the hurricane hit. This has been the story whoever the mountains have had devastating floods (as in 1916): two huge rain events back to back without enough time between to dry out

Man-made climate change is intensifying extreme weather events and making them occur more frequently. Tropical storms have never developed in ocean waters this warm since humans have existed on this planet. If anyone says this is political I'd like them to point out where I said anything about the political system. This ain't about politics, it's about bringing in a future where our children and their children can grow up in a habitable environment.

For those who don't know the term, "1 in a thousand" refers to a chance per year, and doesn't actually mean they're spaced a thousand years apart. That said, yes, their frequency is increasing so they're not as rare as they used to be.

Quite ironic to see everyone in big gas guzzling SUVs then... Almost like it's the result of people's collective actions. Americans produce twice the CO2 per year than Europeans, and even them so much CO2 that we'd need 4 planets... I hope everyone the best, but this will just get worse.

I grew up on the Northeast in the early 2000’s, was deep in the downhill scene. I live in Edneyville, just above Gerton and Chimney Rock. We’re in trouble here, supplies are running dangerously low. The shelter in Edneyville has no diapers left. Water and fuel are short. If you could get the word out that we’re looking for supplies across the greater Asheville area, it would be a great help. Thanks man, you’re the reason I found my love for downhill and freeride again.

My family is up near Burnsville. I heard from my mom at 8:00 ish on Friday morning and didn't hear back until Sat night. Power out. Cell out. They were lucky to be up on a mountain where the worst was some downed trees that they had to clear. I can only imagine how bad the flooding was in Asheville and the surrounding areas. The humid air from the cyclone hit the mountains there and just unleashed everything. Flash flood warnings everywhere apparently. I imagine Asheville, especially the areas near the French broad, were just devastated. I'm living in FL right now and while something like 40% of our county lost power, our recover has been fairly rapid. I wish the best for everyone affected up there ❤ I love the area and I know it's going to be hard since y'all don't have the same infrastructure and response for getting hit like this.

Bro, do you even solar? My house has survived several natural disasters and solar + home batteries made a huge difference. The best thing about that setup is that you don't have to run extension cords, it all just works. BTW it's not true that nobody expects disasters like this. Everyone who's paid attention to climate science for the past 20 years expects disasters like this. "1000 year storms" are comparing to the last 1000 years, that's not what our climate looks like any more.

It is mind blowing how we avoided this. We traveled from south Florida to have a mountain bike themed wedding in Old Fort. Us and our friends rode every day in Pisgah and DuPont, THE WEEKEND BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. I am sorry for the people that lost everything, hope they get the help they need. Also, if anyone knows him, I hope Chad from the Old Fort bike shop is well. I saw aerial photos and the whole area was covered in mud. He is the nicest, most pleasant bike shop owner and mechanic I’ve ever met.

Seth, I’m very glad you and your family are safe. As soon as I saw Asheville was being hit hard, I thought of you and the park. Just wanted to express how much my heart goes out to you, and the Asheville community. You are a huge inspiration and one of the first youtubers that got me into mountain biking. Wishing you and all of western NC the best as you work to recover

Good prep plan, and nothing sounds better than a generator starting on the first pull. Hope you and all your neighbors are ok down there, I hear the aid workers, road crews, linemen and relief $$ are moving quickly. Stay safe.

This is the type of thing where a transceiver would come in handy. Get your ham license and a ham radio. Most if not all ham radios will run off a 12v car battery, you don't have to worry about cell towers if something like this happens.

James O'Keefe sells this life saving package. It has prescriptions for covid, antibitics of all kind etc. It is about $180.00 and you have to speak with a Dr. before they send it, but it really is a life saver to have that in your home or on vacation for these reasons.

From Bradenton, FL. Man, this storm was one for the history books. The islands down here are destroyed. But the community that came together and continues to help out day and night.. that’s the real story. Everyday people doing Heroes’ work. Thank you everyone 🙏

We have a house on the lower side of Asheville Hwy, in Pisgah Forest. Nobody has been able to check it yet. It looks like you drove by it. It's right next to the rock climbing school and a woodworking business. By any chance, do you know whether the low side of the road flooded? 3448 Asheville Hwy.

As a Californian this reminds me of Northridge. Even if you're fine or just part of your house is trashed, you're still suck. No power, no water, nothing wild but you just. can't. go. anywhere. I live well outside any wild disaster zones now and I still have that emergency kit. Though... do I need a Gator? Maybe I need a Gator....

Glad you and your family are safe. Thanks for the up close reporting and journalism. Your daughter will one day see it as a time capsul. Did not realize Florida was so lush, but then I don't travel much further than I can pedal. Funny how through it all I saw no disaster relief (FEMA) peeps, but maybe they were the ones clearing the roads. Nice to know Starlink helps but what about InReach?

The area is decimated from Asheville and Henderson. There are no other words. Places like Chimney Rock are not even being reminisced of what they once were. This will be many years and billions of dollars just for us here in the western Carolinas. I took footage from the river outside of Asheville the morning after and will keep it forever as a reminder of when things are out of your control and how bad things get.

this just pretty much changed my perspective regarding where I want to retire. Just because I live further inland...it doesn't mean I am "safe" from flooding. Currently live in Chesapeake VA for 10 years now.

My heart goes out to all those going through this catastrophe. After decades of living in Florida and surviving multiple storms, this one was the worst of all. We all made it without major damage, thank goodness, after Hurricane Wilma our neighborhood was without power for six weeks, it's very tough to have to wait and try to survive, but it always takes a few days for help to arrive in full force, hang in there as best you can.

I’ve already donated to Salvation Army. When you can, go to the local feed store and get antibiotics to keep on hand. I learned that from a prepping channel. Praying nonstop for all affected. I used to live on the Louisiana coast.

pointing at this and saying "see? climate change is true!" uses the same faulty logic that pointing at a blizzard and saying "see? climate change is false!" uses. there are lots of good reasons to think climate change is real. a single event is not one of them.

As an Italian this reminds me of the floods we had last year and this year in Emilia-Romagna; unfortunately this types of events are becoming more and more common all over the world. as 17 yo I’m scared of the future and i feel terrified by the idea of not being able to do anything about it. I wish y’all the best, thanks Seth for sharing the ride with us.❤

I’m so sorry for everybody in the affected areas especially since my family loves to visit Asheville and many other parts of NC. We experienced a fraction of this type of damage in Florida from hurricane Ian and I know how hard it is to see so many people around you losing so much. Thanks you for making this video and keeping us updated.

This was to be expected with climate change, lots more water throughout the entire system. Rains, floods, snow, landslides, riding water levels, worse storms. We are there.

As bad as it is, it’s not the worst in 100 years and it’s definitely not the worst in 1000 years. Rural Appalachia see this kind of flooding nearly every year it’s just not usual in this part of Appalachia

I am glad you and your family are safe. It's never the hurricane winds for the most part, they are devastating, but its always the flooding that is the real destructive force at the coast and inland, but this was just insanity, I have never seen anything like this in my 60 years of living in Hurricane alley.

Ever since I heard about what happened in Asheville, I have been worried about you Seth and your family as I have followed your channel for years. Glad to hear that you’re doing OK. I am so saddened about what has happened to Asheville that Paradise in North Carolina. I have wanted to go there and have started tentatively planning a trip there with my motorcycle and mountain bike but now that does not seem like a possibility this year. I live in Virginia, and when the storm took that western hook, we were spared here at my home. But then we were pelted with rain last night. I am afraid to look if that has caused further flooding.
I used to hate QR codes. But they're actually genius
