My dog started her second heat last week and today she won’t stop crying and she doesn’t want to eat. She looks agitated and is lethargic. I was worried until I did my research and found out all of those are symptoms your dog can experience during heat. This has been the longest couple of weeks. My 10 month old is in her first heat. Almost done now just waiting on the swelling to go down all the way. Penelope has changed a lot. No more puppy nibbles and she seems a lot more sensitive. My lil young lady is all grown up. Now I will get her spayed mid cycle. I am so glad I was able to allow her to mature fully first.

amahler03 Exactly! Not to mention sometimes spaying does more harm than good to specific dogs. The hormones produced by the genitals are extremely beneficial most cases and the issues causes by hormones can be easily monitored. I'd only spay if the dog turns middle aged and the chances of them forming hormonal problems are increased

Good video, but no one talks about how you actually comfort a dog in heat. My dog who is 7 months old now. She got a shot to help her thru this season, like one week b4. However, she is very anxious to mate and not sure how to comfort her as I do not want her to mate. Males Thank God are not jumping over fences or tearing down fences to get to her, which I am very happy about.

Great tips!! Thank you! We needed them!! I had already bought fancy panties & pads to get ready. Things make more sense now in regards to their behavior & not wanting to eat puppy food anymore. This is the 1st time we’ve had a female dog go into heat & we are lucky enough to have sisters in heat. Yay!! lol 😂 We’ve always had our dogs fixed beforehand. I haven’t decided on breeding them since they are purebred Silky Terriers and so adorable. It’s a BIG decision to make. We will need to keep them inside now since our new neighbors have a boy dog. The sisters have been fighting over him. The neighbor dog turns his back to them & ignores their flirtatious barks. I’m thankful for that. 🐕❤️

My female was perfectly fine, it was one of the males that have not been fixed yet, he kept crying and shaking, not eating food or drinking water for a couple of days because he wanted to be near him. Tried separating them and he would be downstairs crying All night. Until I got them diapers and let them be around each other, he would fall asleep next to her and wouldn’t let anyone come near her: a few days later he stated eating again and went back to normal. He kept trying to mark his territory inside the house so the male dog diapers helped out a ton!!

Thank you SO much for discussing the fact that females do lose their appetite. My 14 month old is going through her first heat and I had no idea about the loss of appetite. I have been making their food since Jan. 2024 and they only eat dry kibble as treats and she refuses the home made food and will only eat the kibble and then will only eat 2 or 3 pieces at a time. Everyone saying “just spay her” there are many recommendations of allowing your dog to have her first heat before spaying due to studies showing greater quality of life later on. Each species is different, for example for my golden studies have shown that not spaying leads to decreased risk of cancer, which is high among golden’s. Just putting this out there to encourage research and making decisions for what’s best for the dog as opposed to just straight judgement.

Dogs dont normally pour with blood, the bleed is only usually tiny amounts of blood and or a yellowy liquid, depending what breed of dog and at what stage of the cycle theyre in. Get some washable mats to place around the house if youve got white/light coloured carpets, and put a throw on the sofa and beds. It only happens twice a year, so its no big deal. The pads can be used when taking them out to protect them if a male dog mounts them. Wearing the pads usually lessens the scenting - which really comes into its own at around the second week, thats when they are most at risk of male attention, and of course want it, its natural, its procreation! It is also so natural and important for a dog to lick itself while on heat. The dog has flushes of crucial hormones which should be allowed to happen, especially until adulthood. If you research before taking on a female dog, it helps you and your family understand all of it before you commit. There are so many helpful articles you can read if you google the subject. Ive, thankfully, learnt so much by reading/studying the process of Estrus. My dog is 19 months and coming into her 3rd cycle. I prepare for it, so I know what to expect. It does last for 3 weeks or more, but from what ive discovered from doing research, its no where near as troublesome as some of the physiological effects of spaying too young can have on them when they get older. Their temprement does alter, a couple of weeks before: my dog will become sensitive to loud noises, and bark at things she doesnt normally bark at: a bit like us humans! A calm enviroment..and humans is all they need DO SOME RESEARCH..not just vetinary sites who are mostly pro spaying. Thank you for your informative video. My Tricolour Willow has just come into her first heat today at 6 and a half months, so information very helpful. Baby nappies wont stay on, may have to get pants. Bleeding is for about ten days cant be desexed for a month from start of first season but better to wait 3 months breeder said.

It actually does not. While it can decrease aggression in males, it can also increase aggression in females. It can also make them more fearful. Studies have shown that intact dogs are less likely to be scared of things like thunderstorms. Additionally, if dogs are spayed/neutered before they are 2 years old, their chances of developing bone cancer later on in life triple. Hip displasia has also been linked to early spay/neuter. These are just examples of the negative side effects, but there are many more if you care to research it.

OneLove I wouldn't necessarily assume that all vets are just in it for the money. Unlike human doctors who specialize in specific areas so that they can be truly knowledgeable in their fields, vets are expected to know about many different species. This means that they can't go in depth on anything and only have fairly superficial knowledge. So when a vet recommends spay/neuter, they might genuinely not know any better. Additionally, the research about the side effects on these procedures is fairly new, so older vets might be operating under outdated assumptions.

theirs some debate,it depends on the dog and human custodian.I know some people advocate leaving very heavy weight dogs such as great Danes intact so bone density is also as oestrogen and testosterone affect it.If I had a dog I think if anything I'd get their tubes done so they dont reproduce but leave them intact for ethical reasons (you wouldn't do that to a human) and because gonads severe functions other than reproduction such as having a role in hormonal balances.

Adork Able you are right that getting tubes tied is the ideal solution, however it can be hard to find a vet that will do it, so it is not an option for a lot of people. Unless you are keeping a dog outdoors in an area with a lot of strays, or have two dogs of opposite sexes, it's also not too hard to prevent accidental breedings anyway. Unlike humans who can get pregnant at any time, female dogs can get pregnant for a few weeks every year. If breeders can keep males and females in the same household without accidental breedings, I think it's fair to expect owners of single dogs to be able to do the same.
