Ingrid, I am in my 50's, and don't have my monthly cycle anymore, but I perspire SO much in that area! I find that when working out, I am most comfortable wth a panty liner. The U brand is very absorbent and fairly thin. I always feel dry, even when I'm not, and I think that it helps keep my undies cleaner as well as reducing chafing, since there isn't the extra moisture. It works for me!

Very good video. I always carry female pads in my toiletries bag just in case I come across to a girl who needs it or for ones. I learned from you, Just now, to bring tampons in my toiletries to share with whomever needs them. What is your favorite shelter system? Thank you so much for sharing this video. God bless you.

Brushes/combs are pretty important in tick areas. I always brush out my hair at night to make sure I don't have nasty ticks on my head. I know, gross but I have found a couple.

90-100% Deet may be cancerous, but so is a lot of things, and to an arachnophobe who loves the outdoors, it’s well worth it 😹. I find hats and keep my hair tied up tight for as long as I can until I need to redo it works the best. I spray it on my hat and my hair and I’ve never had a tick really get me on scalp (and I have big curly hair thats to my hips). The only places they have gotten me is my neck and the places under my clothes where I didn’t spray the deet (One place I go is extremely tick friendly almost everyone who camps on our trips there gets typically at least one while there even if they only sleep there 2 nights, when they I spray it on exposed skin and the openings of my clothes and try to keep them tight (tuck pants into my boots, tuck my shirt in, but I can’t tighten around my arms holes or neck line that’s likely why they get through to my back).

Been using a P-style for around 6 years. Beats dropping your pants in 10 degree weather and you don't have to go way off trail or hope no one comes along if you don't . Makes it easy to take a whiz from your tent or hammock in the rain too.

I would suggest that those who are interested from the pee rag will find female hikers blogs about how to use it. It is not actually as nasty thing as it sounds and when you know how to care it it is also hygienic. I know it is something I'm going to learn how to use.

Some great ideas! I love the idea of using a buff for a pillow case, the Q-Tips, the razor in town, and also the nail clippers. I think a menstrual cup is best for me but I've also been using it for over 5 years before the trail - you have to be comfortable with it to be comfortable on the trail - dealing with it and cleaning it and everything. I'm still working on my trail routine with it. I will say keeping it cleaned properly is an important part of the process.

Thanks for sharing! I can only say that a menstruation cup made out of natural rubber or medical grade silicone are the way to go: only one thing to carry instead of many tampons, no soaked tampons to pack out. Wash with soap when done your period and rub some tea tree oil and/or lavender oil on it for total disinfection (also good for sun burn, blisters, zits, cuts etc).

Diva cups are made from SILICONE, not plastic. And they're only unsanitary if you don't wash it ?! Just rinse it with water in stream or wipe with biodegradable toilet paper and then rinse off with hydrogen peroxide. I replace hand sanitizer bottles with hydrogen peroxide; it's more multipurpose.
@KatJaguar1122
@KatJaguar1122 7 жыл бұрын
Jon Rogers Dude, read : hydrogen peroxide. Alcohol works also. If you don't know multiple ways to sanitize things in the wild then you're too stupid to be out there.

Jon Rogers And people BATHE in streams too. Birds sht in it, animals walk in it, I hope you are realistic. Most of the blood gets poured into the soil anyway. I'm lucky to find a stream that I can drink from using just a sawyer water filter or the like anyway; most water in this country is too chemically polluted to use mere bacterial and pathogenic precautions only.

Another thing to consider is to take note of how many women you know that have not had some kind of reproductive issue with their organs. It would be very few. Most of those issues are prevented or improved by NOT using dioxin laden products touching the very porous skin of the vulva and vagina. That's the biggest reason to not use that commercial crap.

Hi Ingred, thank you for the video, really appreciated hearing your personal experience. Not so much a female specific question... but I wondered if you or any body else could help... I am planning on doing the PCT 2018, I am from England and I am on medication. I am not sure how I can get around without having to cary 5/6 months worth of medication with me from the beginning. Because I am not based in the US I understand that pre-sending boxes is extremely expensive, so was planning on restocking as I go, but can't do that with my specific type of medication. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you that is really helpful. Could I just ask... will it be easy to arrange parcels to be sent along the trail before I leave, but once I have arrived in US. I have a question: I will use cleaning wipes for # 2. I know it is not recommended to bury the wipes, I will have to dispose otherwise. Putting everything in a Ziploc bag. But when night comes, when I'm ready to sleep, what do I do? I leave the Ziploc away from my tent to pick it up the next day doing so until I can throw it in a trash bin? Is there a danger that an animal tries to open the Ziploc and then scatters all the contents around at night? I do not really want to pick up that kind of disgusting thing ...

Not helpful to know but, wetwipes, most actually contain plastic and apart from being anything but biodegradable, they are especially bad for the environment. Um...tampons aren't so sanitary either AND can cause TSS which is a fatal infection that works quickly! Seriously, like 2 seconds on Google and you would know menstrual cups are one of the safest things out there. Plus they are silicon, not plastic.

Another great video! Helpful info even if you're just planning a few nights on the trail. I have to say I can't see how anyone would want to use those "cups" out on the trail. It seems like they would be really hard to keep clean plus the mess on the hands from dealing with it. Ew! (not bashing anyone who does use them) I am prone to uti's so the cleaner, the better, as far as I can see. Tampons would be the lesser of the two evils and forget pads! Like you said, just a big bulky diaper to rub and stink. Thanks for covering these topics.

Madalyn Clark It's only unsanitary if you don't wash it ?! Just rinse it or wipe with biodegradable toilet paper and then rinse off with hydrogen peroxide.

KatJaguar1122 wiping it with biodegradable toilet paper won't clean it well enough and you can't pour hydrogen peroxide into the environment and fuck carrying it around as well
@KatJaguar1122
@KatJaguar1122 7 жыл бұрын
bcobaindoll Of course wiping it with toilet paper is not enough. You only need a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. I empty hand sanitizer bottles and put it in there, that's how I carry it and it's more multipurpose than the hand sanitizer. Rinse with small amount of water, and then use the hydrogen peroxide OR alcohol. You only need to carry enough to do this twice per day for maybe 4 days. Sure it's not "convenient", but menstruated is not convenient. To each their own, but the cups rock in my world. One can also use liquid natural tea tree oil concentrated soap for washing when you have enough water to rinse with, which is the soap I carry or something similar.

Both hydrogen peroxide and tea tree oil will do detrimental damage to your lady parts if residue of those remains on the cup, pleaase don't do that!

There was just a long discussion about this in one of the pct discussion forums where I'm. The thing is that big portion of PCT is desert or rocky terrain where it takes ages for anything to decompose. So it can take years from TP to get back to dirt in there. One person told how her friend had hiked the PCT year before and on next year they took section hike and passed a place where she had pooped and hided it under the rocks. Everything looked like it was done yesterday still year later, including the TP. That combined with the fact that people are lazy with digging proper cat holes and how much there is now hikers and quite a lot of them newbies with hiking, it just means trouble with these issues. Specially with wild live digging things up. There was a lot of talk last year from it how common it was that the TP was decorating the trail. I'm sure it wasn't very enjoyable sight. That is why they recommendate now that you pack your TP out too. If I remember right it is actually mandatory thing to do on this year on PCT.

evilherbivore exactly, for a 5 month internship I was requierd to be on a small boat with up to 10 people and no toilet facilities for full workdays so I just kept taking birthcontrol. Now I still take them because I really dont see why I should get my period. There is no health risks and it just saves you so much work

hate to be the Debby downer! but ! COUGARS, COYOTES and BEARS! they are on the PCT. the potential is there for them to pay a visit. odds are low but the potential is still there. so one may want to think of getting some scentless bags for the monthly fem time products. if for what ever reason you want bring disposable vamp bags, bury them like a 100 yard off trail! go with scent less bags, there safer! for a quick clean- No Rinse made by CleanLife Products the shampoo(at the roots/scalp) and body wash(pits and privets) the small 2oz bottles last a while. they make wipes as well. there a bit batter then regular baby wipes(i think).

You can't hide scent from a bear their noses are incredibly sensitive so the so called scentless bags aren't. As for cougars and coyote encounters that are attacks you have a better chance to be hit with a meter from space.

She was on birth control (I assume) so she didn't get her period that entire time. It's not unhealthy, and you don't actually have to get your period at all if you don't want to if you take the pill. No issues whatsoever. Your body only bleeds due to withdrawal of the pill anyway
