I was at the music festival that Kira's parents were heading for when they were killed. Although I didn't know them personally, it's a very tight-knit festival, and we shared many mutual friends. I'll never forget the sadness at that festival, and I still think of them. It helps me to see how Kira handled this monumental tragedy and kept hiking. All the best to her and their family.

A beautiful story. I found it especially moving since Kira's mother, Elise lived next door to me and she and Gary were two of my earliest childhood friends. We lost contact and when I learned of her tragic death I was so very sad. Watching this story indicates the type of mother she must have been. What a wonderful, strong and determined daughter she has given the world. Thanks for this wonderful story.

Jon MacDonald I’m a lot of things but racist isn’t one of them and it never ceases to amaze me how horrible people can be when they can hide behind their computers. I thought she had an inspirational and tragic story and I have a right to have an opinion. Obviously something offended or angered you and for that I sincerely apologize.I certainly don’t want people out in the world thinking false & negative things about me such as racist, twat, & the other mean hurtful things you throw out of your word hole towards total strangers you know absolutely nothing about!
@harmony3310006 жыл бұрын
Jon MacDonald but what he said about and to this young lady is fine😳?! And I apologized! And where I come 🇨🇦from it’s not THAT bad of a word for eff sakes so I didn’t realize how it was going to be interpreted as RACISM (strong word for which I’ve never associated myself with in my life!!)but really, did you read this losers comment in the first place🤨!! I’m guessing I hit a nerve on him for one reason only😐🙄and his comment also leads me down the same path...🤷🏼♀️maybe I should have just said troll🤦🏼♀️....

@brandon91728 жыл бұрын
Krister krimm Well when you hike in summer you can get food from berry bushes I'm guessing. So it's best you learn about the native plants around the trail before going. Possibly small game hunting also. (IDK if that's allowed)
@iltre90238 жыл бұрын
You prepare everything beforehand, and you get shipments you prepared from the mail at various outposts on the trail.
@niixxz948 жыл бұрын
Most people do a combination of what filtre said and also resupply at stores in the towns along or close by the trail. Some don't prepare shipments at all and buy everything as they go. While the entire trail takes the average person around 5 months to complete, most times you only want to carry about a weeks worth of food.
@Ureyeuh8 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of preparation for the trail ahead of time. You pick out gear, factor weight, study the trail VIA guide books and websites, and plan for food resupplies wherever you can drop the food VIA mail.
@SirPajamaBottoms8 жыл бұрын
No.. to everyne else who's commented. You buy food in towns along the way.

Kira first I would like to extend my condolences for your loss. My brother and I were on the PCT last year and we were fortunate to be able to see Rob playing in Kennedy Meadows when we passed through. I only recently found out what happened, otherwise I would've sent a message sooner. My brother has made an attempt to contact the family on the facebook memorial page regarding his performance there. If you would like to know why we are attempting to contact your family please feel free to message me back. Again we are deeply sorry :((

Oh, that money :) People doing the PCT or the AT usually start preparing for it at least a year before leaving. Think of it as a long term project. So they put all the money they can aside for it. Some people spend time in towns along the trail (some sleep in hotels) other just spend the bare minimum.

So how do women keep themselves clean on the trail? Specifically, all the parts that need to be shorn on a daily basis? Seems it would be a pain.
@Toyon957 жыл бұрын
The same way men do it? What parts are you thinking of?
@Chantwizzle6 жыл бұрын
You stink and you get hairy like everyone else on the trail. If your main concern is hygiene on the trail you should probably stick to day hiking. I'm a woman and I don't need anurging ”shorn" on a daily basis. I assume you're talking about genitals, legs and armpits.

I think these people are a little nuts to go into wild wilderness areas with no weapons of any kind. The also look as though it will never rain on them and never seem to have enough equipment to survived below 60 degree temps. Take a couple of TARPS with the tent with you at least and a shovel and a machete. The machete can be used to cut wood to make an a frame over the tent then cover the a frame with a tarp. Dig a ditch about 10 to 12 ins vdeep and wide lay the tarp edges in the trench and cover it all the way around so animals and insects can't get in and in case of flooding rain it won't get in. Take a whole lot of rope too to tie evey thing down because of wind. Stakes are also needed and they should be over 18 inches long and steal. A solid steal or hardened aluminum hiking pole about 5 feet and pointed on on end would help. Take tape duct tape or 2 in electrical tape to tape rips and holes. The tap can be used to seal up your ankles in cold and seal your waist in snowy weather. I lived out side in wooded areas for over 20 years alone and I know other secrets too and I have live through 20 below temps in a tent for 6 months without heating or fires. Believe me these people are not what they claim to be.
