To be fair, the music industry nowadays is not designed to create superstars like it used to. Sure, some people have potential to become that, and people are supporting them, but the stan wars, the drama, the lack of support, and the focus more on looks and aesthetics rather than talent is really crippling the growth of people’s fanbases. Edit: Forgot to mention this, but the generation of "I-Pad kids" and TikTok being popular decreasing the average attention span makes it even harder for artists to stick around, as short form content is currently doing very well, so people are often just finding something new instead of going back to the artists they normally listened too.

Female rap in general has never been that commercially viable aside from a few exceptions throughout history . It’s always been limited and even some of the most notable names and pioneers of the genre sold very little (MC Lyte, Queen Latifah.) I was surprised to find out that Missy Elliot hadn’t sold nearly as much as I had imagined. In her prime she felt massive but I think most of her impact is based on her overall influence on the music landscape and not commercial success. Lil Kim wasn’t a big seller either but she had presence and impact in her prime. She changed the image and direction of female rap and presented blatant sexuality and high fashion Lauryn Hill came and shook the game up because she came from a critically acclaimed rap group then she was able to craft a brilliant album that blended hip hop with R&B/neo-soul sensibility and it garnered worldwide acclaim and commercial success . People forget about Eve but she had a very solid run she just bowed out the game early. Then Nicki Minaj came and completely reinvented the wheel as the total package that had never quite been seen before. She had the hip hop credibility (come up dvd & mixtapes), looks/sex appeal, charisma, pure rap skill & lyricism, pop crossover appeal and marketability. She got the co-sign from arguably the biggest rapper in the game up til that point (Wayne) and she emerged at a time when the female rap lane was completely vacant. She had to compete and integrate herself with non-rap female artists instead. Her longevity as a female rapper is also unparalleled.

The Nicki and Lauryn impact is insane. People talk abt Nicki's influence which is undeniable but forget Lauryn's peak, she sold incredibly well and won awards beating Jlo, Madonna and even BRITNEY SPEARS in the pop lane and beating JayZ, DMX, and Eminems in the HipHop lane. Insane impact those two have.

@@craigjones1946 so glad you pointed this out Whenever people say bitter things about Lil’ Kim, I just think about the fact that even though she was never really commercial like that, she had global reach and a huge impact. People like to deny that because of the way Nicki became a commercial success. That’s never been the norm for female rap artists or even required imo. There were others like Rah Digga, Foxy Brown, Remy Ma etc, people liked their music, they just didn’t blow up commercially which takes nothing away from their overall creative output.

The American music industry needs to take notes from the Jpop and Kpop industry when it comes selling physical CDs. The album packaging and everything else is still alive and well in Kpop and Jpop. But that requires harboring a deep parasocial relationship, beyond what western artists are accustomed to. It's not just the fancalls and photocards that you can get with an album purchase (although that would be interesting to see in the west). Taylor Swift is the only western singer similar to a kpop artist IMO and her fans don't even come close to the insanity of BTS Army. Rappers have to be willing to answer to almost everything from their fandom, give them what they want, constant engagement and high quality performance. Zach, someone made a GREAT comment about why it’s female rap is meh right now. They’re all pulling from one fan base. No matter how everyone feels about Onika… the fan base is the BARBZ. Doja , Sexxxy & Cardi are the only girls to escape that shadow.
@randolphfair79153 ай бұрын
People don't want to admit it. But the barbs make up at a minimum of fifty percent of the consumer ship a female rap. That's why it took 6 female rapper fan bases to push Oh girls record in January. They want help from the barbs. Then the moment they feel they have barbs, they show their true colors to Nicki. Then, expect the same support after the betrayal.

I think the problem with a lot of rappers has always been that they aren't very musically skilled. Many of them like Megan and Latto are great at rapping but not creating music so they really need a solid team around them to build the right sound. Doja and Drake are the only two I can think of who pretty much can't NOT make hits because they have actual music/artistic backgrounds and have a good ear for popular music. I don't think many black people like pop music so they are constantly trying to discredit them because they think rap/hip hop is supposed to sound a specific way but they are both the most successful for a reason. If you're relying on a label or others to push you you're just going to be chasing trends because they're more skilled at extracting money than crafting artistry these days. I love Megan, think she's a great rapper but I don't care for her albums. That Japanese song is cringe and a clear attempt to go viral. In fact, i think the thing with most female rappers is they are more influencers than anything else. Latto herself said people didn't start paying attention to her until she became super sexy and she's been rapping her butt off since she was a kid. That lets you know most people don't come to them for music but just to look at, that's why their numbers be so low. They remain popular by being provactive, putting out vibey songs, and attaching themselves to other popular people - bonus points for dating someone who's more successful and well known than you, lol. In the grand scheme of things it's not so bad because music is a job for many and a lot of these girls are doing VERY well for themselves. It just sucks for those of us who really value music as an art form and can't get great art from 'artists' we like. It's the same with singers these days you have to be able to craft your own sound because the labels can't afford to just bring in a vocalist and build a career around them like they used to, there are exceptions of course like Dua, and even Normani seems to have that kind of push behind her - but it doesn't compare to someone like Bey, Taylor, Arianna, or Billie who can create great stuff on their own and just put it out. Those are the artists I see thrive even if on a small scale - people like SZA, Summer, Mariah the Scientist, Doechi, Kali Uchis - they have been consistently successful because they have the skill and creativity to create things that sound good and resonate without a lot of money/help.

The debate was brought on by Joe Budden, he's always had a hard time with seeing Doja as a rapper(I watch his pod) and its honestly due to him just not liking what he THINKS she stands for or represents, same with Drake and dare I say Logic(iykyk). It's not even a question at this point it's always going to be Nicki as number 1,like it or not and I believe Doja has done enough and WRITES enough to where she is number 2,the other girls can argue over the other spots.

I feel like the new girls are at the point right before they’ve matured and really mastered their sound and their style. A perfect example of this would be doja, she as an artist has found that IT factor that is necessary to be a chart topper, and right now the only other young artist (imo ofc) to be close to reaching that point is Megan and maybe some of the lesser talked about girls such as Flo Milli and doechii although even they have some more growing to do before they’re on that level. But overall I just think everyone needs to take a step back and hone their craft.

Would love a Chloe album review. I didn’t expect to replay as much of it as I do!

JT "album" is actually a mixtape. That's not her debut.

@@josiah_crazy7621 y'all just be talking out the side of y'all neck lmao and her mixtape did the same amount of sales that ice spice did and remember Doja Cat only had 4,000 pure sales. Y'all don't be looking at facts. At the end of the day. I'm a Nicki fan but still trying to downplay people on their organic cone up cause y'all used to sympathy and payola lmao

I think the industry is oversaturated. And most of them sound similar. They also haven’t built genuine fan bases.

I have followed Doja from the beginning, n I do mean the beginning, b4 Moo when she caught on. NOBODY can touch her music!! I remember when she would be on Instagram writing a song off her dome n getting feedback from her fans to complete a line or ask for our opinion. We knew then she was THAT GIRL n it was only a matter of time b4 she blew up. Ppl need to stop saying her name when referencing Latto or any other female rapper bc she's in a lane of her own. Period!!!

I wish her well she’s talented . Her style is kinda like a blend of Azealia Banks flow combined with Doja Cat versatility and eccentricity

It’s coming to flop.. let’s be honest. Doechii has no fan base, which is needed! She’ll be doing Lil Kim 9 album number (9,000k) in the first week. Good luck
