fencekid You inspired me to go to harbor freight and a local bead shop, and buy a mandrel, dapping set, punch set, blow torch and hammer. I just finished my first ring! It's not too great, the hole was off center, but it kind of gives the ring a top and bottom, if you will. Thanks for the videos! I really like doing stuff with my hands, and this seems like a hobby that can fit any budget! I'm looking forward to giving my first ring, and many more to my girlfriend! Thanks for the tutorials! To fix the side you didn't like, leave the ring on the mandrel with that side up. Now take your hammer and lightly tap that edge toward the mandrel while rotating the mandrel. Be careful not to tap the ring further down the mandrel as the purpose is to equalize the ring edges. Tapping too hard could cause separation between the nickel and copper, so go light. The whole ring making process here can be done solely by tapping the coin down the mandrel without using the PVC, but I like the PVC idea, it is very clever

you can get smaller anvils, and you don't even need one. It's just a nice thing to have. I just spent 200 on a slightly fancier set of tools for ring making.
@scottk42475 жыл бұрын
When forming the ring on a mandrel, you can easily avoid splitting or cracking through a simple process called "annealing". The metal cracks because it becomes "work-hardened". Work hardening is the same process that occurs when you bend a piece of wire back & forth several times... the metal becomes physically harder, and therefore more brittle (less ductile). Eventually, it's no longer soft enough to bend - when it's hard enough it fatigues, cracks and breaks. To anneal the silver coins, stop working it periodically and heat the metal to almost Cherry-Red, called Dull-Red (900°F). Then either allow it to air cool or quench it in water. (Quenching can cause metals other than silver to case-harden) Do this a few times (2 or 3) during the stretching /forming process. Each cycle of heating and cooling "normalizes" the silver to its prior hardness... the cracking / splitting can be eliminated. Btw Not "rivets"... the serrated effect on the outer diameter of a coin is called reed or reeding. The taper you've sanded on the outer edges is called a chamfer.
@wowbaggertheinfinitelyprol62625 жыл бұрын
One way you can be sure not to overheat silver for annealing, is to make a mark on it with a Sharpie marker pen (I usually draw a cross) and then heat it. When the mark fades away, you have reached the correct temperature. This can be handy when working in bright light, where it is difficult to see the dull red colour.

@Devon-3point15 жыл бұрын
My father taught me this when I was a lad and I've refined my method several times over the years. One thing that is a big help and timesaver is to use a circular rubber sanding paper holder. Slip your ring over the holder drum instead of the sandpaper ring. After that put the holder into a drill chuck.tighten the drill in your vise and use the drill trigger lock or a piece of wire to hold the trigger on whatever speed you like. You can now sand off the edges perfectly by holding the sandpaper against the turning ring. You can also follow this with some very fine crocus cloth then some polish on a rag.You get an amazing pristine shine this way. This will work especially good on your rings that you take off the lettering and just make polished silver. I have some photos of this on another hard drive in a closet.... If you're interested I'll get them out and show them to you. Peace and be kind to everyone. Devon Etherton

Thanks for your video - it's a great idea. If anyone in the UK is thinking of trying this, I have some info that might help. First, UK coins are now made of steel with copper or nickel coating, so they probably won't be suitable (though I guess you could use them for practice). I'd suggest getting hold of old shillings - they're almost exactly the same size as a quarter, and before 1920 they were made of sterling silver. I've bought them on eBay before now, and they weren't very expensive.

Get a ziplock bag and mash up a hard boiled egg in it. Put the ring in it and let it sit a few days. It will form a nice tarnish on the ring. Then polish off the high points and all the details will jump out and give it a antique effect. It's a nice touch.
@valeriebellflower26669 жыл бұрын
+James, Moore That would work much quicker and better if you use only the egg yolks, since it is the sulfide concentrations which cause the patina affect. Also try doing the same using mayonnaise, it's easier and simpler, and contains the same sulfides, but with slightly different variety of patina, but also allows for a more even coverage and less distorted effect.

I know nothing about making jewelery, but using general metal working skills, I'd say you could use a smaller hole. Obviously that's going to make a really wide ring, but then you can grind it down to your desired width. I doubt the etching will line up correctly, and you'd probably end up sending it all off to make it look decent, unless you just leave it wide, but you'd still have a cool piece.

You beat me to the 'reeding' comment, though i'm sure several people made it, out of the 2800 comments, lol. It's funny when you can tell someone is a not a coin person even though they're doing something with coins. I got into them a little over a year ago and i caught the bug BAD, turning into an obsessed roll hunter and even metal detectorist within a few months. But since then I've gotten a bit jaded about what is more popular (sellable) and less; most of it makes no sense to me. I have access to a couple of amazing coin shops where I can get both old B.U. rolls and amazing old foreign coins from everywhere in the world, for really cheap, but I'm supposed to annoy my bank by requesting boxes of half-dollars to spend endless hours searching for silver content worth only a few bucks, or even sillier (to me) searching 2019 quarters for W mint marks? WHATEVER. So recently I decided to turn away from coin people for now, and make stuff with the incredible array of old and foreign coins I have, and sell them on Ebay. And they're selling like hotcakes! Finally, people who appreciate coins for their overall beauty and history, not nerdy details like mint marks or details that require magnification to see!

What kind of polish did you use? Do you have a video for that? What about smaller women’s rings, size 6-8? Would you still use a quarter?

What happened to the Georgia ring?, one minute it's a Ga. Quarter while he was making it, then when he started sanding it, it turned into a Alabama quarter ring! Now, that is a awesome trick ring! Watch the video close, you'll see what I mean. Not picking on the video, just paying attention....... but, thank you for time and effort in helping me out with this video, much appreciated! I've been wanting one of these rings every since I saw one on KZbin. It was made out of a gold coin, a super nice version of these type rings. I wondered how they were made, now, thanks to you sir, I have a really good idea. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Some of us really do appreciate you taking your time to teach us the trick of the trade! 😁😁😁

What type of polish do you use on the non-silver quarter? I would guess you would use silver polish on a silver quarter. Great job on this tutorial! Thanks.
My wife told me that I had watch a couple of your videos...damn, man, you rock. Now, we're looking to find the supplies and start making some rings...great gift ideas! Oh...and I watched your video on making a forge from a lawnmower--very cool...wish I needed one, because I really want to make it.

I would assume that to make a smaller hole ( ring size) use a smaller punch? with more sanding. seams more like a feminine item. NO JUDGMENT! I would sport a pinky ring like this.
@fencekid10 жыл бұрын
the punch hole size dictates how thick your band will be. the smaller the hole, the wider the band. the mandrel dictates the size of the ring.

@ufochannel016 жыл бұрын
so do you need to punch a smaller hole to make the small size rings? and arent you suppose to fire the ring or coin at all with a torch of some kind? sure looks good at the end. thanks for sharing.

What if I needed to make a smaller size, Would I still be able to make it like that ? If so is it the same process ?
@fencekid5 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. But a compression die would really help. Make it just like this, then press it down to the size ya need

I don't believe it's illegal to turn this coin into a ring because:In Article 1 Sec 8 of the Constitution it says, " - The Legislative Branch Section 8 - Powers of Congress.....To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures;....."This coin was NOT coined by Congress, but by the Federal Reserve, who, on Dec 24, 1913 with only 3 members in attendance in Congress, ILLEGALLY TOOK the right to coin our money despite the fact that the Constitution had given that to Congress alone. What gets me is that our Congress has yet to do a darn thing about it.We have to stop defending the monsters who make sure we are securely shackled in every aspect of our lives.

Its (not illegal) to make rings out of coins, because he does not intend on using them to make purchases. If someone was giving him things at a public vender where people spend actual money, in exchange for them it would be considered counterfeiting. Just like destroying or defacing US currency in private with no intent to put back in circulation is ok but the moment you put it back in circulation you have essentially committed a crime, although it would be hard to be enforced.

Great instruction, but what do you do if need a smaller ring?
@chuckjohnson945410 жыл бұрын
Great instructions, I am having a problem with the quarters & dollars splitting, would you have any insight on what I am doing wrong?
@fencekid10 жыл бұрын
chuck johnson Yup. If you anneal your coin (heat to dull red hot) and cool, it will be much softer. As you work your piece, it will become work hardened. You will feel it getting stiffer, and will eventually get so stiff it splits. Anneal your piece often, and it will make everything that you are already doing, much easier. No such thing as annealing too often. A side effect of this is fire scale and carbon. I just made a video on an acid bath which helps prevent carbon and makes polishing much easier
