I'm convinced. Had a workman use these strainers and can't recall any of the fences we've built having strainer posts pulled out of the ground. Has quite a lot of issues with other fences doing this, so overstraining fences must be quite common. Time to invest, I think.

I have always believed its time for improvement and safety of strainers. These strainers are brilliant. Hayes are and have been my main stay in strainers. Absolutely first class review Tim, you guys in Oz certainly know a thing or two about fencing. I am in the UK and got Fenceline to ship me a set a couple of years ago after seeing their video and been delighted with them. Need another set and not sure if they are available in Europe yet so guess I will get another pair shipped. Totally agree about the cheap ebay copies….always spend a bit more and get quality, you will never ever regret it.

Great review fella. I’ve had a pair of Fenceline strainers for a few years now. Absolutely brilliant. Like you say so much easier to use and so much safer. First set of pressed steel strainers I bought as a kid were a literally a couple of quid. The box was better constructed than the strainers. Bought some Hayes with my earnings from the first paid fencing job in the early 80’s. Still have them a d still like to use them. But the Fenceline strainers are dope. Them Kiwi boys have always set the standard in good work practice. Remember a couple of shearers did a New Zealand dropper fence for a neighbour on the Downs near us in 78-79. I had the honour of replacing that fence a couple of years ago. We were taught to make a fence last at least twenty five years. That Dropper fence was over 35 years old. There are fences round about my neck of the woods I did back in the 80’s still earning their keep. All the best.

The fenceline strainers are excellent, but are quite pricey compared to a basic set. If you're only doing a small/medium amount of fencing I'm not sure they pay for themselves. But if you're a contractor, doing a lot of fencing, or just like to have good tools, they are worth the investment.

Great review - thanks Tim. Another item for my (rather long) shopping list. I have found a good use for the older style - with the wire clamp on one end and the chain slot (for going around a post at the other). It is very difficult trying to tie new cordon wires into a vineyard that's full of vines (a lot of fighting through shrubbery while trying to install the strainer and not knock too many branches and bunches off). I've found the easiest way is to attach the chain to the post at one end, carefully thread the chain through to the wire I'm trying to strain, attach the clamp on the other end of the chain to the wire and pull the wire through by hand as much as possible. I've now got a cordon wire and chain that is under some tension, no loose chain dangling into the foliage, and can (at a more leisurely pace) attach the wire strainer and strain the wire. Of course, the Pro solution would be - get your cordon wires sorted in winter! Keep up the good work

Thanks Mate. Have been 'sitting on the fence' re a what strainers to buy. I have an old set of Hayes; They do the job but dont love them. I like the look of the lever block styles but $600 and a complicated straining mechanism is a deal breaker. Fenceline Strainers look to be a proven concept/style of strainers that have been refined. Your review has convinced me that Fenceline strainers are the go.

Hi mate, now you've gone to far. I use my Donald strainers that my grandfather gave me 34 years ago as my secondary set and back up set. What you are saying I find completely ridiculous, to put my 22 year old Hayes strainers on the back burner for these, I just can't believe it. Ha ha great review mate, they certainly have spent some time analysing, in my opinion, the only 2 strainers to have, and have addressed the little niggling issues with them. Worth a try, I reckon I know a bloke that will lend me a set to try (hint, hint). Great job mate as always.

G'day Tim. I'm about to take the plunge into fencing, and I'm happy to pay for good gear and these are obviously top of the line. But I'll be doing sheep mesh, and in one of your other videos you recommended two sets of strainers to do top and bottom of the mesh strainer. 400 bucks is one thing, but 800 is a whole other thing. Should I go a cheaper (but still decent) set for straining mesh? Or is there another approach? Cheers

Hi Lachlan. Use a block and tackle for the bottom until you get going and can afford a second set. You should be able to get a decent block and tackle (hand winch) for much less than a hundred bucks.

You need to review the Wireman ratchet strainers and strainer board. These strainers are good. Wireman strainers are better and the strainer board can also pull multiple plain wires at the same time.

Picked up a set of fence strainers from Bunnings a few months back only cause the local farm stores were out of stock, worst buy ever. Get the wire up to tension so that it can tied off and then the fun starts in trying to get the fingers/claws off the chain, almost like there's not enough movement between the fingers to release the chain when you go to walk it back down.

G'day Ross. It was another of my strainers, as you need two if you are going to strain at the top and bottom of a set of boards. It was a wireman strainer, I've reviewed these before. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Hey Tim I’ve been building my diy fence. I found the these strainers are hard to release and need a hammer to hit them loose. Am I straining to tight? I’ve gotten a really tight strain on my first fence I made, it feels nice. Learnt how to do it with your videos. Thanks

I haven’t had that problem with the fence line strainers, but have experienced it with thin wire (2mm) with the wireman ones. Normally you only go to about 1/3 breaking strength of wire, which is 2.2KN on the built in strain gage. Going beyond that will only stretch the wire and weaken it. Hope that helps.

You can attach them to the central bracket on most strainer plates and just use the one set, but top and bottom Allows for adjustment over terrain. Hope that makes sense.

Ordered a set on Tim's recommendation. $358.00 Au. I am in Canada and the listing definitely said that shipping was free. I paid the purchase price through PayPal and at no time in the charge was there an additional shipping fee added. Next thing I know I got a bill for $94.00 ish AU. Was not impressed and felt ambushed by the additional charge. I wanted those strainers and was willing to pay the expensive price, but not when I felt used with the hidden shipping fee which should have been placed on the order at the time of purchase. I sadly cancelled the order and Fenceline has indicated they will refund the purchase price. Too bad. There were other products that I was maybe willing to purchase and they did list a shipping fee. Customer lost.
