when straining barbed wire to a wood end post I like to place the wire around the post and attach the strainer to the end of the wire, not to the post, so you are staining the wire around the post. Strain the wire to the desired tension and then place a staple in the post over the last barb on the post. Then remove the strainers, and friction of the tight barbed wire around the post anfd the staple holds the barbed wire in place and then tie off the barbed wire. This way you do not lose any strain at all and it is easier to tie off with the strainers out of the way.

Hi Tim, thank you so much for your informative videos... I would have been lost without you for my 'lone female' sheep/goat fencing project but I think, I have hit a snag on the final step. So it has taken me quite a few months to get to the fence straining part but I am having great difficulty with this step. I hate high tensile sheep wire, lol! I have got one clamp and one set of hauser fence walkers/strainers (probably not your advised brand) but I can't find any of your videos where by you demonstrate how to secure the chain to the center of the boundary clamp (as I only have one fence strainer to hand). Do you secure the chain around the post and then secure the other end of the chain to the center handle of the boundary clamp/stretcher through a D ring or do I need two separate pieces of chain? Any advice would be very much appreciated on this crucial last step as the sheep are bleating desperate for their paddock to be completed, lol🐑🐑🐑?

Hey there. First, well done! I’m assuming from your handle and your language you are in the US? If so I strongly advise going down to your local big box store and looking for a cheap block and tackle or winch kit. Use this opposite your strainers (put them on the top) and then you will have enough tension to strain the mesh properly. You need about a hundred kilos minimum per line wire (not sure what that is in imperial) but this means that a typical 8 line sheep mesh goes to about a ton! Far beyond safe with one set of strainers. Also, by having one at the top, you can adjust to get your picket wires nice and straight. Don’t be overwhelmed by straining. It’s really rewarding.
@wolfmoon3431 Жыл бұрын
@@FarmLearningTim Thank you for your encouragement Tim😊 It's been a long process, I am just finding this final part very frustrating. I wish I was in the US but I am in England. I thought about getting a come along rachet system to make it easier than the damn fence walkers, lol. Is that what you mean or, is it something different?

Hi Tim ,I have hair sheep would it be ok to hold sheep in with a electric fence as I would like to graze through apart of your orchard , ?if yes what size unit for the sheep to respect the fence , the area would be about 4aces cheers Tim love your videos
@FarmLearningTim3 жыл бұрын
Never done it myself but I’ve heard that the red hot tip is to introduce sheep to electric fencing after shearing. So hair sheep should be ok? Maybe others have experience. Ask this on my Facebook page and I’ll open it up to comments.

Update after having this set of strainers that I ordered all the way from Australia to America very very expensive right off the bat one of the grippers would not grip wire. They did send me a replacement only just to have another gripper fail also instead of swivels and high-quality rivets and bolts to hold the gripper to the chain wire man uses threaded on chain links as you can see in this video those band quite easily another thing that happens is you have to bring Allen head drivers with you to keep tightening up the bolts they typically fall out. I’ve had the gripper fall apart a couple times and lose the bolts while I’ve been out in thewoods working on FENCE I finally just had to order a pair of strain strainers made in New Zealand that are sold here domestically and they’re about $100 cheaper. I do not recommend these strainers to me. They are junk.

Good old WD-40 will give you a little "joy" with those "little buggers" (crimps). Give your crimper a good squirt and you won't believe how much easier that first crushing of the crimp becomes. Guess it removes a little bit of friction that holds you back.
