Greetings, What gives a more painful shock for the same amount of energy? low impedance or high impedance fence chargers? Edit: I might add; for a small fence system of about 200 feet.

Get a low impedance unit of around 2 joules and you'll be happy. High impedance aren't really made anymore and if you do find one, parts are pretty slim for one.

I have a 10 yr old plastic Gallagher but no info on it. i put my meter on the unit and it reads @ 6.5 does that mean 6.5 K volts? How can I find out how many Joules it has? Why did you mention Amps? 1.2 A will kill a cow or horse. sorry, but you got me confused. thanks for your time.

Can you email me a picture of the Gallagher unit you have, fencerfixer816@gmail.com The 6.5 is 6.5kv or 6,500 volts. On the amperage, it will hurt the animal, but since every low impedance unit made is a clicking type, all it does is give the animal a safe, non lethal pop in the nose or wherever, and allows them to bump off the fence and away from the wire. It's a psychological shock more than anything, and they'll learn real quick not to touch it. If it was a continuous shock, which old weed burner type units were 45-50+ years ago, those could hurt things if the right condition was met, but that's why those aren't around anymore.

I see solar energizers are common between .1 and.75 joules. Is solar somehow different in joules or is it they are not adequate for say goats?
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity Жыл бұрын
The biggest thing with higher joule units and solar is the sizing and cost of the solar panel needed to maintain the battery. The more joules a unit has the more draw it has on the battery and the bigger the solar panel requirement would be. The biggest joule all in one solar unit with a battery is the Gallagher S400 solar at 4 stored joules. If you want more joules for goats, you're going to have to go with a standalone 12v powered unit. There's lots of different brands that make some 5-15+ joule 12v units, you would just have to come up with a good size solar panel and a voltage regulator to maintain the battery and keep up with the draw. For goats, most companies say you need a minimum of around 3-5 output joules. Also, don't look at mileage ratings on a unit, that will sometimes get you in trouble and end up picking the wrong size unit. Also, don't go real large in joules even if you can afford it. Look at around 4-6 joules for goats and you'll be just fine. If you need help with solar panel sizing, give me a holler and I'll bet happy to help you out

I have a Gallagher S12 unit and I'm hoping to keep out rabbits/squirrels from my garden. Will this be sufficient? And should I have more than 3 strands of wire? Thank you!!

If should be stout enough. Just make sure the unit it's well grounded and that the spacing between each wire is set to where the critters can't sneak through the wires or sneak underneath.

I have a Udap BEF Bear Shock Electric Fence with AN20 ELECTRIC FENCE ENERGIZER 7kv, 0.04 J maximum output energy (0.05 J stored energy) for a three strand 25'x25 ' perimeter fence. I want to add three more strands of poly wire for a total of six strands of fencing. I've read that you need at least 1 output joule to keep out bears. My question is by adding more wires and wanting all six wires hot in moist soil with a 5/8 in. x 4 ft. Copper Grounding Bar Rod should I get an energizer with 2 joules and about the same voltage? It's for tent camping.Thanks.

How many joules for bulls and cows?
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity 10 ай бұрын
It doesn't take take that much for them, but it really depends on how big of an area you're covering and if you keep the fence clean or if it's covered in grass and such.

Do you know if Parmak advertises in stored joules or output joules?
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity Жыл бұрын
They advertise their joules very weird. If you look on their website they'll state a unit as say 6+ joules high and 3 joules low, not sure what they're getting at exactly with the high and low. I'm guessing the high is stored joules and the low is the output joules. I've never gotten a good answer from them.

There's not one that I know of here in the states that I can find. They're was a cheaper priced one in the $100+ range that we had, but that dumb thing broke and doesn't work. I've talked to manufacturers about trying to get something from them, but they don't manufacturer them and it's just kind of a one off thing that they have. So you really just have to take their word for it on what the stored or output joules are. And honestly, all the units we tested with the joule meter we had ready fairly accurately of what was stated by the manufacturer is the fence charger, so they're probably telling the truth a good portion of the time.

I have a relatively short fence, to keep garbage bears from our porch, and have a unit that puts out over 8000 volts and is quite powerful in terms of joules (though I do not know that value off hand). It is intended for large farm animals, and has no observable leakage to ground. Do you think there might be an internal resistance (a phantom load) to set a higher joule value, or should I install a moderate load resistor just to ensure there is enough juice to deter a wandering bear? The unit is sealed, so I cannot check inside.

If it's a low impedance electric fence charger, you shouldn't have to put any external resistance to it. When the animal touches the fence, their body is the resistor going between fence and ground which causes the unit to ramp up it's power you shock the fence harder. The unit doesn't know the difference between an animal touching the fence and a human or a bunch of grass, it just feels resistance, so it'll do all by itself.

@@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity Thanks so much. It is low impedance, so no worries. Not being a farmer yet having large potentially aggressive animals wondering by, led me to electric fences, and you have taught me a great deal. Thanks again.

Enjoy all the FFR videos! My question is at timecode 7:36...shouldn't you be getting a higher joule reading when under no load? I have a .2j output charger and the same meter and when I test with no load I get a joule reading of 1.70j at 4.8kv but if I attach the 200ohm across it right on the money of 0.2j at 2.2kv. Would the meter need a load to quantify joules or is the charger actually putting out 1.70j when under no load? Are you then able to calculate the joules when the fence is applied or is this only tested without the fence but with the resistor?
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity 3 жыл бұрын
With no load across it between fence and ground, the unit won't have any stress so they kv should be high and the joules will be low. The resistor going across is just what I use to simulate a certain load on the fence between the fence wires and the ground, like a bunch off grad or something. Typically they won't read much joules at all with nothing connected across them, but with high kv. The output joules won't really start showing up until you get around 500 ohms across it, that seems to be what most brands base their readings off of is 500 ohms. Bigger units will handle heavier loads down to 50-100 ohms, but smaller joule units can't handle it as well. The closer you get to zero ohms across the terminals, a dead short, the heavier the load is on the unit. On smaller powered units, once you get too much of a load on it, it'll eventually drag the kv down too far and you won't get much joule output at all.

So how many joules/volts would you recommend for goats?
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity 2 жыл бұрын
Volts aren't really super important because every brand and model is around 5kv-10kv range, so you take want to look at the joules. Goats need at a minimum of 4 output joules to make them respect the fence. You don't need 15-20 joules because it'll be a waste of both money and shock power that you probably won't be getting because of not having enough load for the unit. So I would look at anything in that 5-10 joule range and that should be plenty enough for goats.

I am pretty certain using the 200 ohm resistor is important for producing a relatively accurate Joule measurement using the Field Guardian Fault Finder. The way it is measuring Joules is by using ohms law and measuring the voltage drop across an assumed resistance load. It converts this voltage drop into Joules using an internal conversion. Using 150 ohms instead of 200 ohms I would almost care to guess resulted in your Joule measurement being lower than the actual Joules. Joule = 1Watt for 1Sec = Voltage * Current * 1 sec = Voltage^2/Resistance * 1 Sec. I could totally be wrong as I'm a little rusty on electronic theory 18 years since I got out of the Navy as an Electronics Technician.

I didn't have a 200 ohm resistor so I used what I had. Every model of low impedance fence charger has it's limits of how much resistance it'll take. The joule output of the unit will increase at the terminals and will go so high until you reach that limit and then you'll start to see the joules start to go back down because you're dragging it down too hard. I don't think the difference in 50 ohms would've made all that much difference in the joule reading it gave. That Field Guardian tester is pretty cheaply made and it finally quit working about 6 months ago. I think this particular video is 2+ years old already.
