first of all, thanks for the comparison! i guess the main difference here are the speakers. are you able to test them both on the same cab/speakers? that would be interesting. i predict they will sound much more closely. the bassman appeared kind of short on volume here, too.
@matthewf1979
@matthewf1979 7 жыл бұрын
RorysIrishTour I bet after 58 years of service you'll be short on volume too! The Chicago Jensen's are pretty inefficient, low to mid 80's sensitivity. Those new Italian P12N's are in the high 90's. Basically, the Twin would be easily twice as loud in person. With both amps using similar speakers with close efficiency it would be pretty close. The 5F8A Twin is capable of about 65-70 watts. Limited by the single GZ34/5AR4 rectifier that can only produce a maximum of 250ma and an undersized power transformer.

Johan, there are plenty mustang reviews and comparisons - that's not the point. You most likely played all vintage and/or reissue amps mustang can stimulate, and have proven you can nail the essence of the ones. Others usually fail to do so and hence theyrs comparisons are irrelevant. Even if little of yours viewership are interested directly in mustangs capabilities (or lack of such) - I bet, they will gladly take one more video you passionately jamming a guitar :)

With all respect, I have to agree with Johan on this one. On tape, the desired gain level is most significant. Now, if your room and recording rig can't handle the volume, that's a potential problem but any engineer worth his salt should be able to get a full out amp on tape. Doc, you've got a lot of cool gear and great taste. One thing I noticed in your vids is your time/feel can be a bit wild. Might I humbly suggest playing out a bit more often and focusing on groove/feel in your practice time. Nobody cares about tone if the music doesn't make you wanna get up and dance :) Just some honest constructive critique... take it fwiw. Peace

Justin Shaffer Lol Bro I'm a trainer who loves vintage gear and enjoys what little time I have to play. You can disagree with me all you want, but how you drive the speakers will alter how they sound. Volume does affect everything, the tubes, speakers the trannies specs etc... If you think making comments on my playing proves your point better, then go a head. I also restore amps and do reconing. The knowledge you learn from that is key

I shall agree to disagree :) Should have kept my mouth shut. As a trainer, you'll be aware that even a small time commitment with dedication, mentoring, and good form can go a long way. comparing the schematics, the signal path is identical between the two amps. the differences are in the power section, the bassman has two 5881 power tubes without grid resistors and the twin has four 5881 tubes with 1500 grid resistors going only to the addition 2 tubes. the only other differences i see are the Negative feedback resistor being 27k for the bassman and 56k for the twin, and the HT voltages being 650VCT for the bassman and 600VCT for the twin. the main tone differences are from the speakers and cabinet differences. the twin shoulda been the "bass" amp and the bassman shouldve been the "guitar" amp IMO

Very nice comparison, Johan! Love the sounds! My spontaneous initial thought was that the Twin is maybe the late '60s/early '70s Marshall SL compared to the Bassman, much tighter and more upper mid presence. Makes one wonder how it would've been if Jim Marshall had copied the Twin instead, ha-ha!

Mats Frånlund Circuit wise, the only difference between a 5F6A and 5F8A are two more octal sockets. The Twin's output transformer is literally twice the size of the Bassman's OT. So, Jim would have still built the same amp.

although I oun a 59 twin after listening to your video trying to be as fair as possible.i feel that the twin had much better sound than the bassman.the mids were much cleaner without being sharp sounding.

Missed this one. But I love the LP on the bassman en the Strat on the twin. Not sure if this is because of the classic sound. But I just do.

It occurs to me that they sound a bit like the same amp with different speakers, the Twin with reissue G12M's and the Bassman with late 60's/early 70's G12M's.

I want them both! But for my ears, the twin takes the easy win. The bassman just doesn't have it like the high power.

The Twin HP was surprisingly comparable to the Bassman. The Twin is in great shape, please verify that it's an original 59 and not a reissue.

I think I do prefer the Bassman, it's smoother. The twin has more high end bite. But I think something right inbetween the two would be perfect!

From your many comments on the subject I have noted that you want the amps demoed with a Strat. I will keep that in mind.

Just want to hear the variety and variables.. researching as well as a poor man can..if I eventually get a Marshall, it will be such a huge financial sacrifice, I absolutely have to make sure I get it right..

it would have been nicer to hear the Bassman against the low power Twin, i think it would have been closer. My money is on the Bassman between these two amps. I like the lower power through the 10s.
