I like your demos. You utilize nice chords and phrasing but mostly you let the notes ring out and don't try to put too many notes out there to try to impress people. I want to hear what the amp sounds like and you were very effective at that. Thanks

Thanks for the comments everyone. Yes it was pretty loud in there and of course that never comes across on KZbin. I made the track up at the session, obviously using a One Of These Nights feel but with totally different chords, melody, bass line etc. I did everything except drums, which Martin Holmes programmed. It was recorded in Steinberg Nuendo. I thought the guitars were appropriate to the track - yes, nice combination the Tele and 335.

The heart of my home studio is two vintage blackface Princetons (one a Reverb, the other an Amp) in stereo. I don't employ the in-cab speaker of the Reverb, but instead use two outboard 12" speakers wide left and right. I do use the in-cab speaker of the Amp, but it sits on a 2-12" vintage Fender cab (with Jensens) in between the right and left speakers of the Reverb. So "stereo" is in to out, not left to right. For two low-wattage amps, the sound is HUGE, wide and throbbing (I LOVE the trem of the Reverb). When setting up this rig (which literally took years, as I slowly re-habbed the amps and acquired speakers) I was VERY careful to phase everything correctly, which is dead critical for an array like this. End result - I have never heard a better in-studio sound. There may be its equal somewhere, but I can't imagine one could be better, for my tastes, at least. The cleans are to die for, and I get my dirt from pedals (a Allums-modded Boss SD-1and a Super Crunch box in series these days). The "stereo" (as opposed to mono x 2) is a product of the stereo out of a TC Nova Delay last on the board. In combination they are sweet enough to put one in a diabetic coma and if you desire, loud enough to make your ears bleed. All of which is to lend credence to me saying that as much as I generally enjoy your demos (I listen to the Les Paul Jr and related guitars video over and over) this one absolutely does not do justice to what the Princeton Reverb has to offer. This is not to criticize, but to sing the praises of the Princeton Reverb as a GREAT foundation for a rig that will yield any sound at all - from crystalline to Zep/Stones/AC/DC (nope - won't quite do metal) and from Nashville cleans to throbbing swamp boogie. Go for it - you won't be disappointed...

Funny that Fender call the amps tremolo a "vibrato" and the vibrato bridge as "tremolo".
@TheAndyroid
@TheAndyroid 8 жыл бұрын
They also included a 'Standby' switch which has led to decades of guitarists (and even amp manufacturers!) not knowing what standby is for. Only radio transmitter valves actually benefit from a standby switch. Oh, and badly designed DC coupled cathode followers. It is cheaper and more reliable to build a proper DC CF circuit, all it needs is a resistor and a diode, much cheaper than a high voltage switch. Fender have a lot to answer for!!
@TheAndyroid
@TheAndyroid 8 жыл бұрын
Plus, over use of 'Standby' actually damages valves! Bloody Fender.
@cbappa2

+TheAndyroid so there's no benefit to a stand-by switch, even when letting the tube warm up for a minute?
@TheAndyroid
@TheAndyroid 8 жыл бұрын
cbappa2 The valves used in guitar amps don't need to warm up before seeing high voltages. (One or two high wattage bass amps are an exception because they use transmitter valves to achieve stupidly high power). Using standby mode can be dangerous due to cathode poisoning and sometimes rectifier arcing due to high inrush current filling up the first filter capacitor. But standby can reduce the time DC cathode followers are run 'out of spec', the max grid to cathode voltage is often momentarily exceeded (in Marshall amps for example) at the moment of power on. www.valvewizard.co.uk/standby.html Should have just posted this link instead of typing all that, oh well!

For a "show" I want that amp on stage and ready to go. When we are announced and hit the stage I turn on the amp and go. For that, 'stand by' is valuable.

I have never really been a fan of Fender amps past the tweed era, but seeing a local band play with a Princeton Reverb opened my eyes to the possibilities of the blackface amps. However, I think what I would probably prefer is a Princeton Reverb with a 12" speaker, over the stock 10 or the Deluxe. It should be a simple matter to make up a new baffle cut for a 12 and fit it with a Celestion AlNiCo Blue. Currently, I play a Rickenbacker 330 into a Mesa F-50 fitted with 12AU7s in the preamp, KT66HPs in the power section, and a Celestion Vintage 30 driver.

I have always found the sweet spot on either channel of the DR to be 4 on the treble and 5 on the bass. Clip the bright 75pf cap that is on the volume pot on the vibrato channel. And put a Celestion Vintage 30 8ohm replacement speaker in there. You can also get a nice tonal improvement by replacing the output tubes (valves) with new Tung-Sol output tubes and have them biased to 65% of there maximum output dissipation which is 14 watts. Obviously if you’re not used to this kind of work have a qualified technician do it for you. The combination of all these mods that I listed will make a huge difference in tone. All for the better. Also an Eminence Cannabis Rex is a great sounding speaker replacement that sounds great in the Deluxe Reverb for a bit less money. Especially in the DRRI.

for new amps they sound great. the differences that folks notice between the originals and the reissues it the originals are well broken in. the speakers are worn in and the componets have drifted over time but these offer up great potential at a fraction of the price for a vintage 64 or 65 version.
@rolux4853
@rolux4853 4 жыл бұрын
Goobie Caro I get what you mean, but the „fraction“ of the price is still a hefty price tag for the most of us. That being said I’m in the process of trading my MIA Blues DeVille for a 68 Princeton. After watching lots of KZbin videos I’m a little bit concerned that the 65 Princeton or even a Deluxe Reverb would sound better for me.. But since there’s nobody willing to trade any of these amps for my Blues DeVille I think I should try to get happy with the 68 Princeton and maybe in the future someone is willing to trade a 65 Princeton or a Deluxe Reverb for my 68.

@@rolux4853 you'll be pleasantly surprised that the '68 with a different speaker will offer. The celestion in the '68 is great just pick up an eminence. I believe the vibrato channel is voiced like s '65 then you'd have a '65.

The original amps may have that nostalgic vintage vibe, but they are also completely problematic with old circuitry and components just waiting to leave you in a bad spot, because they’re temperamental and break down. I opt for the new reissue over an old vintage amp.

Deluxe wins in bar gig hands down. Try that Princeton next to a drummer, no bueno, the DRV is dimed, using guitar volume/tone pots for drive. For gigging the DRV is only one that can barely do it. Still wish I'd lugged the Vibrolux to most gigs, cleans and nasty, 40w with 5AR4 rectifier. Princeton is terrific for recording and if you're Mike Campbell and have a dedicated PA guy who's fired if you're not high in the mix, but dont as a regular joe guitar player ever count on soundman, bring enough watts yourself, then mic once you're guaranteed in the mix. Lessons from the road.

It uses a 40w Jensen alnico speaker instead of the regular 100w Jensen ceramic speaker, so it has less headroom and less overall volume…and breaks up a bit earlier and more so than a regular model.

Keeping the bass so high (with a modern guitar and recording gear) results an undefined sound whill the speaker is compressing in an unmusical way. I never understood why people are setting the bass over 4 ever... that way those amps would not cut through any mix since the speaker is too busy and tired. Sounds ok in the studio since you can edit the sound.

+Scott Card had the same thought, i own a deluxe reverb and i can barely play it at more than volume 3-4. its a shame because of the distortion once it breaks at like 5

+Addictive4real You could change your preamp tube to a less high output one. It will give you more headroom and push the drive threshold to a farther limit. I use a 5751 tube for the first gain stage and it works fine for me: cristal clear output at high volume and a nice crunchy breakup following. \m/

+Scott Card The room you are in will have the most impact on how loud things seem, in my studio I frequently crank my princeton and it has a celestion gold (more efficient speaker). I find with most valve amps, at around 5-6 they peak on volume/headroom and after that the amp will just start overdriving and compressing rather than increasing in volume. As for the deluxe vs princeton, the bigger cabinet and 12inch speaker contribute more IMO to the higher headroom. Through an external cab or with a more efficient speaker the Princeton has plenty of volume on tap though.

I have watched this before ( I re-watch a lot of your videos) but I missed when you said the 65 deluxe reverb is the big brother of the Princeton, is that in theory or... I have always wondered since I love the Princeton in all its configurations what if I wanted the same tone but more power/volume what is truly its big brother in that sense ? Thanks david

Both are so great!! I like the tone of volume 10 absolutely but when I use a Fender amp something like Twin Reverb in a music studio, I can set the max volume is maybe around 4 and half. Otherwise my ears hurt and I can not stand it.

Very pleasant demo (aah... Tele + 335 !!). When you push the bass on the Princeton, it shows the limits of the 10" speaker... The Deluxe has a more "nasal" sound, but overall better mainly due to the larger headroom and speaker. Both are nice little amps, but I definitely prefer Dr. Z's Maz 18 in that range. Cheers \m/

@@clivemcdaid8817 The Princeton 10" can accommodate a 12-inch speaker. Someone has to make a larger, plywood board for it and then install it. But the amp will work with a 12" speaker. Not sure that the factory-made 12" Princeton is still available.

musket 0402 The demo/review amp has a 12” speaker. I have the same amp. That’s my point. The comment I replied to suggested it had a 10” speaker. I was offering a correction.

Wow, never had my DRRI over 5 without loudness complaints, I can’t imagine being at 10 and that close. I used to have a Pro Jr I could push to 10 but it was loud even not playing it. Good clean up on any ambient amp noise at those volume settings.

Anyone care to explain why the Princeton and the Deluxe get totally different watt rating with same output tubes? Both use two 6V6 power tubes but the deluxe is rated 22 watts the Princeton is 12 watts. Is it the long tailed thinga magig?

I am wondering if the pots are connected to the control panel with washers and hex nuts, or are they just poking through. I had a fender blues junior and the circuit board mounted pots without being secured to the control plate was a poor thing for an amp that costs $600.
