Two things: It may not be apparent because I raised the mic pre level, but the amp was very quiet in the room. I should have done a “this is what you hear and this is what you can do with what the mic hears.” And I thought the lav mic would pick up the acoustic more. With the channel’s focus on amps and electronic gizmos I don’t know if I’ve ever recorded the acoustics in any of these videos. But I can and get great results. But the lav mic here wasn’t.

I used an app to measure db in my apartment and the exhaust fan for the range is louder than I like to play at. I don’t know how accurate the db readings are I suspect close enough for this use case. I am definitely leaning towards an ox box or two notes then get the amps I want.

I like your approach of not having a separate practice amp, and just turning a relatively low watt tube amp down. Of course you might not hear it in all its beautiful sonic detail, complex harmonics and bloom… but again practice and home playing. Also, the concept of playing an electric guitar without the aid of an amp is important. I think playing that way can help you become a better player, where you can’t rely on the amp or pedals to aid your playing or help bridge your shortfalls technically. Also if you can work on making great sounds acoustically with an electric guitar, and pulling tone and sustain out of the instrument, that is going to make your technique and tone better when you plug in. And then there’s the acoustic guitar versus the unamplified electric guitar. I tend to play differently on one or the other. A plus and a minus, as each instrument inspires you or pushed you to do different things. Great video.

I changed the speaker in my 1977 Deluxe Reverb from the Jensen C12Q 35 Watt that was in it (not original) to a Fender (Eminence) Gt12-8 100 watt speaker. This makes the amp considerably heavier to carry, but gives it a lot more clean headroom. Plus it looks better from the rear seeing that Fender Special Design label on the speaker. The Jensen now resides in a Carvin Vintage 16 amp.

I had a neighbour in an apartment building in the '70s who complained my D35 Martin was too loud and I was a floor below him and one unit over. I suspect if I had invented a reverse amp to suck the sound back out of the room, he'd still have complained.

I tamed my DR to bedroom levels by using an Eminence Maverick speaker set to full attenuation, and then using a Weber mini mass to dial the volume down a bit more as needed - usually just needs a light attenuation setting of around '8' on the dial.

I disagree on low wattage amps not being a good investment. I would agree if we were limited to 1 amp but even then I'd say a low wattage amp is better value. I traded my ÷13 ftr37 for a carr mercury, its absolutely the best decision I made. If I play out twice a week then the big amp is only getting a few hours use each week. My mercury gets an hour a day at least, its my most used amp. Its brought enjoyment back to playing at living room volumes, not to mention it records great and still works for song writing sessions and quiet rehearsals. I have a few 'big' amps of ac30, jtm45 type volume and because I have a selection they end up being seldom used. Investing into a single really good practice amp for home use I think is the best way to spend your money on amps, its what you'll spend the most time with and anything that makes you want to practice more has got to be worth it.
@PsionicAudio2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure we’re disagreeing here - the Mercury is a 16W amp. I meant 1W and even 5W tube amps can be very limiting.

@@PsionicAudio thats fair. I just consider it a mistake i made when younger, spent my money on a nice gigging amp that I hardly got to use and using it barely on for practicing at home
@michaelinglis5676 ай бұрын
Ive been saying this for years. More often then not these high wattage amps sound excellent at lower volumes. Its only a few early circuits that truly needed to be turned up a good bit. Pretty much all modern amps with good master volumes are gonna sound great at low levels. And higher wattage gets you more clean headroom which is absolutely nessesary if you want to be heard playing clean with a drummer. I think its very coear anyone who thinks you need low wattage amps to sound great at bedroom levels just doesnt understand why people started saying that to begin with and likely has never actually heard a high watt amp at bedroom levels.

@@johnnyt599 loaded with the eminence I presume? It makes a cool studio amp and yes it is relatively heavy but I hear heavier with the speaker upgrade - and that handle is not the most comfortable! Both are. I had my guitar guru friend do the frets right up to the edges (while still being nicely rounded over) so there was as much playable fret as possible, allowing a slightly wider string spacing than normal. Running a 100 W amplifier through an attenuator is gonna be rough on the quartet of tubes (and on the transformers as well). Considering the cost of replacement tubes these days and the stress you're putting the amp through, you'd be better off just buying a smaller amp for practice than buying all that auxiliary equipment just you can beat up on and "tame" your big expensive amp down to bedroom-level SPL's.
