Thanks for the thorough comparison. It seems to me that the Godin is designed to sound more like an acoustic that can do some electric tones. Where as the Fender is designed to be a good electric with some acoustic tones. I think, the choice would come down to which tone you'd tend to play in the most. For me, it'd be the Godin.

Yes, the godin sounds more like an amplified acoustic with a piezo, the humbucker can be blended with the acoustic sound ad gives it a little more "body". Btw, the fender is a little strange used like an electric, first for the acoustic strings and then because the single coil over reacts to distortion, it sounds nothing like a regular tele. I agree with you , Godin wins for what are my needs

For the plugged in "acoustic" sound, the Godin wins, hands down. The Fender takes it on the electric sound mainly because of pickup placement. But I think Godin sacrificed the bridge magnetic precisely to concentrate on that plugged in acoustic tone. I own a Godin A6U and was considering the Fender as a back up guitar for my acoustic act. Had decided against it; this video validates that decision.

Thanks for your comment Bill, i'm glad the video helped. Personally, I think the humbucker in the godin was meant to give more body when mixed with the acoustic tone. Btw, if you want an acoustasonic to backup, check the new acoustasonic player series, the more affordable version, it just came out these days

Thanks for your comment mate! I quite agree with you, it seems to me that the Godin cuts better through the mix, and the Fender sounds a little fuller by itself, speaking about acoustic tones. The electric tones are both a little weird, the Godin seems a little weak but more natural sounding, the Fender is a little too aggressive when distorted... Again , as you said, it' a matter of personal preferencies

I've had the Acoustasonic Tele for a year and a half now. The benefit to me as predominantly electric Telecaster player is that when I want an acoustic sound on stage, it still feels like playing a Tele (except lighter of course!), but live, the range of tones you can get out of the Acoustasonic is brilliant. Didn't like the Godin at all when I tried it, I thought it sounded thin and brittle compared to the Fender. I played a festival at the weekend and through a large PA the Acoustasonic sounded fantastic, all the tone you'd want for picked acoustic sounds and immense tone when rocking out with it still in acoustic mode. I've had no regrets buying it and it has become a valuable part of my guitar collection. I tend to use it as an acoustic, because I normally have two or three Telecasters with me if I want a true Tele sound.

Now that is a review! Thank you friend - really well done! I think it is the A6 for me, way closer to a quality acoustic and the EQ gives so many options. However, this is the first video where the Fender got my attention. It just does it’s own thing - has it’s own tone, especially acoustically. There were parts I heard that I just stopped and thought - “Oh, I like that!” Still, the Godin is more versatile for my needs. Hi Symone - thanks for all the work you've put into this vid. I've got an Acoustasconic that I bought early in 2019, a bit of an impulse buy. The idea is great, and I've been able to record some wonderful stuff on it, but! I'm a leftie player who's always played LH guitars and changed the nut and saddle, or adjusted the bridge if electric (by a really good luthier) and this Fender just can't be adapted like that (I've spoke to Fender at length on the issue and it's a no-way jose - the electronics just won't work properly if you fuck about with the saddle). So having said how much I like the acoustic tones I can get (I'm much more an acoustic player than electric) I've finally given up as the controls are always in the way - so I play lead on it or nothing. I've been looking at the Godin A6 ultra - and then chanced on your vid! It's convinced me the Fender is best for acoustic tone and the Godin for electric (the Godin I'm sure can be adapted if I buy a leftie - might have to buy direct from Canada (I'm in London UK)). I think a lot can be done with fine tuning the settings, but I have to admit I know really don't know what to do!

Hi Jonathan, thanks for your kind words! You can easily find a brand new Godin A6 ultra or even a regular A6 (if you don't need magnetic pickup) here in Europe both from Thomann and Strumentimusicali.net. About the acoustic tone, i can tell you about my experience. The godin sounds very similar to an amplified acoustic guitar equipped with a regular piezo. I have a martin d28 equipped with a K&K piezo passive system, and i compared the godin and the martin both plugged into an SR TECHNOLOGY JAM 250 Wood , an astonishing good acoustic amplifier. Well , the godin sounded better. compared with the Acoustasonic, the godin wins about playability, the electronic is way simplier and reliable than the one on the acoustasonic, and you can adjust the eq on the fly. Plus you have separate outputs for the acoustic and electric tones , so you can process them properly without a line selector to split the two signals. And it is cheaper , on reverb and mercatinomusicale.com there is plenty of right handed , second handed A6 ultra.

@@SymoneJem Hi Symone - thanks for your long reply! That amp you mention looks lovely, and very expensive. I'm using a Fishman Loudbox mini, which was impressive when I bought it but really isn't up to the job, so I should move up on that. I've also realised the cut away on the right handed is at the 15th fret, so I don't think I'd even need to buy a leftie and convert it for my weird upside down style of playing. Asa mainly acoustic player I rarely want to go above the 15th. I'm now quite keen on getting hold of one (I've looked at other reviews and demos too of course). I'll let you know what I think if I do. Best wishes

@@jonathanwood9314 well, you don't need to get a very expensive amp to sound good, maybe the right preamp or acoustic DI will do the job. when i send the output of the godin to the mixer I use a LR Baggs Venue as a preamp/DI and i am quite satisfied. If you are up to get a right handed A6 Ultra, you can get one very easily in the european market. Good Luck with your research Jonathan, best wishes! :)

@@SymoneJem Hi Symone. I did buy a new right handed one but didn't keep it as the cutaway on the low E isn't enough, especially with the guitar strap taking the useable area to the 12th fret. Luckily (as lefty ones aren't in stock in the UK) I found a 2nd hand one, 5 years old (so the older neck and bridge - it has a rosewood fingerboard and bridge). Had to get it adjusted for my weird way of playing by a luthier, with a new bone saddle and nut. Ended up with two saddles - one for a wound acoustic G and one for an electric set with a compensated G for the plain string (and saddle heights have to be a bit different as you'd expect). Still can't decide whether I prefer acoustic or electric strings on it. But I really like the guitar - fine neck, and much better, in my opinion, for getting a good range of sounds and tones and the acoustic/electric blend. So selling my Acoustasonic now - the only thing I'll really miss is the centre setting on it where it uses the built in mic. Your video has been very helpful. I know you've been very even handed on it and impartial, but I'd be interested in which you prefer. Cheers, Jonathan

Great job on your comparison! I have owned 2 different Godin A6’s. And I have owned the Fender Tele Acoustasonic. I eventually sold all 3. I only kept the Fender for about a couple months. I had each of the Godin guitars for over a year. The Godin to me sounded better with just a little bit of the electric pickup blended in. The humbucker is really too strong in the bass tones. For the price, the Godin is a much better value. Although Godin seems to be raising prices on the A6.
@SymoneJem
@SymoneJem 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man 😊. I agree with you, the godin has the higher quality vs price ratio. And both godin and fender kind of failed with electric tones, i had to put the bass knob on 0 and treble knob on 10 on the godin to make it usable. If the A6 had a bridge pickup it would be the perfect weapon.

@@SymoneJem I have seen where some people have replaced the humbucker with a Seymour Duncan that has a P-90, humbucker and single coil tone all in one. And they love it. They use a triple mount pickup ring to access the different tones. You can try that out if you have time and finances

Hi Lance, thanks for your comment! The A6 is a very good instrument, that is worth the price it sells for. The Acoustasonic is very appealing , the look is very good, but in my opinion it has too much issues to be a reliable instrument. I would’ve like to see how different they sound if you’d tapped into the other positions on the 5 way selector and rolled A & B tests. In position 5 as you have it, you’re only hearing piezo. That’s not how the fender was designed to be used strictly. There are 10 different tone possibilities. I’m not sure on the Godin as that is new to me, but the fender can do a ton in the other positions.

Hi Jody, actually ther acoustic tone of the fender that you hear in the video is always position 3B , the one with the body sensor activated, as I say in the video. To my hear that was the best sound at that moment and so I compared that one. By the way, with the acoustasonic tele you never hear only piezo. You always hear the piezo plus a specific acoustic model taken from the Fishman Aura Spectrum (so , in the 3B position you are hearing Sitka Spruce/Brazilian Rosewood Dreadnough model + body sensor). You can only hear the raw piezo sound sound in one specific position of the jazzmaster model and of the telecaster player series, the one called "lo fi piezo".

A thorough comparison of two excellent guitars. To my ear, the Fender captured the sound of an acoustic better, which surprised me. If I'm not mistaken, the Godin has eq controls onboard, and from the sound of things, I suspect they controls were set in favor of bass, which made it sound a bit muddy. As electrics, both had their own distinct sound, and sometimes I preferred the Godin, and sometimes I preferred the Fender. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

@@SymoneJem Well, I've got decent studio monitors, and I listened to both guitars through exactly the same set-up, and to my ears, the Godin sounded a little muddier than the Fender. I can tell that acoustically the Fender articulates much better, is warmer, louder and sounds more like an acoustic guitar. But the humbucker on the Godin is a million times better. The location of the pickup is smarter and just sounds like a pro pickup while the Fender sounds cheap and edgy, but in a bad way. Not pleasant to the ears. That's my take.

Ciao Simone, great review, I am a big fan of the Gidin Acousticaster, I own and have owned many over the years, Godin got there first with the name, selling a few of my original '89s with LR Baggs pickups, on my Reverb shop. I bought my first to relieve shoulder pain from playing dreadnoughts, but the sound of the Godin is quite unique. The new A6 is much broader so puts a but more stress on the shoulder than the original Acousticaster. The A6 here sounds more natural to my ears than the Fender.

Very different guitars in my opinion. unplugged sound in good in both of them although I strongly prefer the fender flavor. On acoustic tones i tend to prefer the fender tone as well, because it has more medium punch and it sound less piezo than the godin. In the strings comparison I prefer the acoustic sound of the electric strings on both of them. I totally agree with you when you say that these guitars are not intended for heavy electric tones, indeed I don't like both but if I have to choose I think the fended does a better job probably because of the position of the pickup which is closer to the bridge. Even if in the solo the godin has a great sound. At minute 8 I see a nice JCM in the background so why you din't use that for the rock comparison??? :) I think you did a great job with this video and with the volume matchings.

thanks for you comment Enri. I agree with you about the medium punch of the acoustic fender tone (it is good to have it , but probably i would use a little mid cut , and i would brighten the sound a bit), but i find electric strings sounding too harsh in the acoustasonic for my taste. The electric sounds are a little bit strange on both of them , the fender seems voiced to play as an amplified electric guitar without the amp simulation to me, and the godin sounds a little more natural but reacts to distortion in an unnatural way. I used the strymon instead of the real amp just to make everything easier and faster :)

I think that the Godin is probably the better instrument but the acoustic modeling in the Fender can't be understated. It can give the gigging musician a much bigger/more natural acoustic sound. I've got a Martin GPC Aura GT and the fishman aura system in that guitar models different mic's and makes a HUGE difference on the sound and sounds much better on stage compared to just the peizo transducer. I blend it about 80 or 90% Aura system and the rest peizo. I want something smaller and more comfortable to play as well as a faster neck/lower action as I'm primarily a rock electric player and our band fills in with acoustic shows on the side. The Martin certainly sounds fantastic but it's uncomfortable to play after a few hours into the night. I think the Jazzmaster acoustisonic, the A6 Ultra and the Taylor T5Z pro are the 3 I'm looking at. They're all in that $1500~2000 price point.

If you play in a band i think the Godin cuts trough the mix better than the Acustasonic, you can hear it also from this video. But if you like the Aura modeling, you will like the acoustasonic. I think both acoustic imagines in the Aura F1 and in the Acoustasonic models are taken from the Fishman Aura Spectrum. For what concernes the Acoustasonic it is declared and well known. Btw the acoustasonic's tone works better when played alone or in all acoustic ensembles. And it is less easy to play and less reliable than the Godin
@FastRedPonyCar
@FastRedPonyCar 8 ай бұрын
@@SymoneJem My playing is with one acoustic bass and our singer who occasionally plays acoustic rhythm and every now and then our drummer will bring a cajone. I've heard some demos now of the Fishman Aura Spectrum box and it sounds like it does something similar to what my Martin's Aura system does (though the Aura system in the martin models actual microphones vs specific guitars) and makes the pezio sounds way more palatable which opens up my options (if I want to use the pedal) to any instrument with a pezio transducer saddle pickup. It doesn't surprise me that with Larry Fishman making the Acoustisonic electronics that he's taking that pezio signal and probably has crammed a stripped down version of the aura pedal into the built-in electronics. If I'm going to go pezio only, the Kiesel Craig Chaquico is another one that I've actually really liked the look of for easily the last 20 years as an old school Carvin player and it's right there in line with the price of the Fender and Taylor T5. For playablity, I read the opposite.. that the fender is faster and more like an electric than the Godin.

@@FastRedPonyCar Take in account that the Godin is sold with electric strings , and the Acoustasonic with acoustic strings and those kind of strings are the best for these models.. That means that you can play bendings way more easier with the Godin , as you would do with an electric guitar. With the Acoustasonic you have a wound G string, bendings are very hard to do. Plus if you put light strings on the acoustasonic you can experience low output on the high E string. Even the setup they are sold with is very different, to get an "electric guitar" feel with the acoustasonic you have to adjust bot the truss rod and the tilt screw, the godin is ready to go.

I preferred acoustic strings on the Godin (it gives a bit of low end and takes a bit away the thin sound it has otherwise) and electric on the fender (they fit more to the mid forward sound without so much of the nasal and boxy resonant sound that the acoustic strings have). I was thinking for this type of guitar to record acoustic riffs to my interface without worrying if i bother my neighbours at night or if i pick road noise through a condenser mic during the day, but none of them excited me. I actually paused the video and test my squier jazzmaster through an early 2000's korg ax 3000 multieffect that has an acoustic simulation and it does the job somehow (still not very good, needs more treble something i ll never thought about the jazzmaster lol, but i already have this set up)

Thanks for your comment man :) For the acoustic sound on the Godin , of course acoustic strings are better, the sound is warmer anche richer. About electric strings on the Fender, in my personal opinion they sound way too harsh to my taste. I would prefer a mid cut than having a sound so cutting. BTW averyone has different needs with tone. They for sure are a lot useful to record without bothering the neighborhood, and for what is my experience with electric guitars with piezo bridges and acoustic simulators, they work way better in terms of tone. Of course once you record the you have to tweak a little bit and they take very well acoustic IRs, way better then acoustic simulators. here is an example of the Acoustasonic with acoustic IRs kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmWyp6ijprugppI

The humbucker in the neck position seems to collaborate very well when blended with the acoustic sound, otherwise, unless you play jazz music, i find it a little useless. Especially when played with overdriven sound tends to become muddy . If the Godin had the humbucker in the bridge position it would become the real major competitor of the acoustasonic. you would play litterally everything with it.

Great video and excellent playing. You talked me out of both guitars. I'm here because I just found out the Godin is offered in a baritone, but neither of those guitars sound anything like a real acoustic.

Thanks man 😊. You're right, neither of those sound like a real acoustic with a good microphone in front of it. In fact they sound like amplified acoustic guitars, just like the ones that you would hear in a live situation.

Bel confronto.

I'm a full time professional acoustic soloist. I have a Guild S7CE Peregrine, a Taylor T5 Custom, and a Godin A6 Ultra denim blue flame, among 14 other instruments. I use a TC Electronic BodyRez pedal to liven the transducers on all three. A good friend who recently passed away had a "Acoustasonic Stratocaster". I hated it. It was compressed, and there's a weird latency with the digital modeling built into it's circuitry. And it looked like something from a cartoon, not a serious instrument. The Godin is superior in every way. The humbucker is way too hot to blend well, but if you bury it deep (low strings the deepest) it does better. Install a clean 20K or less pickup and you can really get it going. The Godin is made by REAL luthiers with the finest woods (they do not abide "green" principles and actually give you GOOD wood). and the craftsmanship is obvious. The Fender is made largely by low income local minorities in CA. The video of the factory will tell you what you need to know. Not that they cannot make a decent product, but they will not object to a substandard instrument leaving the line. They are EMPLOYEES, not LUTHIERS. These two guitars are not even in the same caliber. Godin, hands down.

Thanks for your comment, mate! I don't feel the latency you mentioned, but i am not a professional musician... About the wood quality i totally agree with you, Godin is far better. And most important to me, the Godin is a reliable instrument, i can't say the same for the Acoustasonic.

@@jefferywhidby2407 apart from battery life, it's the the type of battery that i am concerned about... you can always bring a spare 9v battery and finisch the gig with a Godin... some times the lithium battery on the Acoustasonic leaves you without sound and even if you can play while recharging, if it dies you need a spare guitar.

@@jefferywhidby2407 the American Acoustasonic uses a lithium battery made by Fishman, it is not easy to find and it is not immediate to swap. With the Mexican version the changed the circuit , it not have the body sensor e most important they use standard 9v battery like the Godin a6 ultra does

I have had an A6 for three years now. What you didn't cover in your video is playability; I find the A6 to be one of the most comfortable guitars I've ever played, which is not something I've heard about the acoustasonics from friends that have owned them. I tried t o keep my ownership bias out of the equation while listening to your comparisons, but honestly, the A6 made my ears perk up every time you played it. Keep the A6! Also, try it with DR Zebra strings; they're a good balance between acoustic and electric strings, and will give you a good tone one both pickups.
@SymoneJem
@SymoneJem 3 жыл бұрын
Well, that was meant to be only a tone comparison, so i didn't mention built quality, reliability, playability and so on. Btw i totally agree with you, the godin is way more comfortable to play! About strings, i am forced and happy to play elixir strings, i litterally sweat acid. In my hands, regular strings get rusted in a week. I love the godin because i can play electric strings and still get very good acoustic tones, and i can bend notes like i do with an electtic guitar. Best of both worlds

Just bought the sunburst A6 Ultra. Picking it up tomorrow I’m so excited. I will take your recommendation on the zebra strings if they sell them at guitar center. A guy at another music store recommended fender electric strings because they have the most similar feel of acoustic, so I’ll try those too

Thank you Peter, I'm glad that it helped you! I still haven't been able to try them at gig volume and to choose properly, so for now I am keeping both of them and trying different solutions. Just a piece of advice for you: if you play in a band and play solo sections, maybe the Godin it is better, if you play without a band or as a "loop" artist maybe the Acoustasonic is better.

@@mikenguyen9683 I did get the American Jazzmaster. I do like it very much. It feels great and sounds great. Love the versatility of the guitar and the lightweight. With so many upsides. It does have downsides which can be overcome. Will cost you a little extra money. I have overcome the issues. First a must for all types of Acoustasonic owners. The charging port for the active circuitry. Is on the input jack. It is a mini usb connection. It was not designed right to continuously charge by a tiny jack. So Amazon sells a magnetic micro usb charger that just attaches easy in a second. It’s only $20 usd. While you leave the micro plug in the jack. It looks nice too. Another issue is if a string breaks. The ball end or small metal pieces of that string can break and fall onto the electronic circuit shorting out. They sell what is called Power Pins 2.0 for acoustic guitars. Easy to install with simple video for the jazzmaster on KZbin. I have them but have not installed them yet. People have complained about rattle noise while playing. It was only because the screw was loose on the humbucker. I know to unplug the input jack. It will disconnect power. Leaving the jack in will drain power. My original AJ had an issue where you touch of move the jack it cut out. But Sweetwater had a replacement for me the next day. Great company to buy from. They have sold many and don’t have as big of an inventory now. But the Jazzmaster is the best of the three models. I would not buy a used one. I would also not refrain from buying one because the sound and playability is best with this model Acoustasonic. I would strongly suggest joining the Facebook group Fender Acoustasonic Jazzmaster. There are other groups like the Acoustasonic Tele. I am in both groups. I encourage you to look over peoples issues. But remember Fender has sold thousands of these Acoustasonics. There are some bad apples. But the majority of the owners love their guitar. With the small fixes. I hope it will last for years. I play mine through a Boss Acoustic Singer Live amp and the electric humbucker through a Yamaha THR30ii. Love the amps too.
