We had to do it to 'em one time-- the American Acoustasonic Jazzmaster from Fender is one of the newest and most interesting pieces on the hybrid market, which has long been dominated by the Taylor T5z. Today we're talking about the similarities and differences between these very versatile instruments. Take a listen to some clean and overdriven demos and let us know which one you think sounds better!

I have that exact acoustisonic . It is hands down the finest guitar I’ve ever owned. The sounds are absolutely enthralling. I feel like I am in a sacred place whenever I play it. It has revived my love for playing. I have played and owned many guitars over a 30 year period. The hype on this fender is real people. I defy you to play one and disagree with me.

I played both the MIM Player and the American Jazzmaster version back to back recently. The Player model felt lighter and the setup on it was terrible. However, the American model was totally awesome. Everything was better, tone, feel, looks, and setup. I plan to buy a mint condition used one soon. It will be my worship guitar for church. I currently own a Telecaster Player Acoustasonic and it is better than the Jazzmaster Player. I have owned the Taylor T5 and the Godin A6. This Fender Jazzmaster Acoustasonic is my favorite of the bunch.

I've owned the T5Z and sold it. Just played the acoustasonic jazzmaster and ordered one the same day! The difference is incredible between the two. We could never get more than a couple of different distinctive tones from the Taylor, (also hated the placement of the controls on the top of the body), but every single one of the Jazzmaster shines through with impeccable tone for each. I am a tone snob with acoustics, and I have played a Taylor 714CE as my main axe in every gig for over 12 years. That being said, I'm likely to replace it in solo gigs with the Fender. I was particularly surprised by the gorgeous acoustic variances with that guitar and it moved right into a full blown electric sound which was just as rich and good. Well worth picking up and far more worth the money in my opinion than the T5Z. Happy playing!

Great video guys! I have both a T5z and an acoustasonic strat. Must say that my go to is the strat. Especially playing live gigs. It’s just so much easier switching back and forth and finding that tone I’m looking for. I found myself struggling to “dial in” the T5z quickly during a song and usually just gave up and finished the song with a subpar tone.

Just want to Thank You both for your great ‘Run Down’ of these guitars, none of which I knew about before today. To my ears, the acoustic sound of the T5Z did sound great but the electric sound didn’t cut it at all. The Fender Acoustasonic does have more versatility going for it, as Cooper says, especially for the gigging or recording musician. Love your playing Cooper !!

To each his own... I'm happy just making and learning to play with the Taylor and Breedlove acoustics (and an Ibanez AS73FM, to which I've had fun adding Dunlop dual design strap locks and a custom pickguard). I still grin thinking about how Fender swamped KZbin with reviewer videos on this Acoustasonic's introduction. Thanks to Fender and Robert Baker who gave one of these away.

I have heard so many people hate on the most recent Acoustisonic line and it cracks me up. Like, yeah, they may be a little strange looking, but if you play one... goodness gracious are they nice! Thanks for the great review, guys. Out of scores of guitars I've owned, acoustic & electric, my recent acquisition of a used T5 is the one I like the most. I've never tried the Fender Acoustasonic because I do not like the look of it at all. I want good looks AND a great personality. I also prefer the T5 to the T5Z because I'm more into acoustic guitars than electric.

I enjoyed your comparison. However, as a T5 owner and an avid viewer of T5 reviews, I don't think you got the best sounds possible from the T5Z you played. Richer acoustic tones are available using the tone controls and the humbucker pickup in position 3 would have made for a better comparison. Also, it would have been nice to hear more sounds possible from each guitar. Having said all that, the Jazz Acoustasonic made some very nice sounds - despite the way it looks... :o)

I’m wondering if you have videos reviewing or comparing guitars from Godin or their subsidiary, Seagull guitar? I am particularly interested in your views of the Godin 5th Ave Uptown T-Almond, Godin Montreal Premiere LTD With TV Jones pickups, the Godin A6 Ultra (which could be compared against either guitar in this video), various models in the Godin Multiac line, the Godin xtSA, the Seagull S6 Original, and the Seagull Mini Jumbo Performer, as well as other various higher end Seagull guitars. I am also wondering if you have any videos on the 2023 winner of acoustic guitar of the year, Riversong Guitars?

First off, nicely done video. Good info and nice comparison demos. Outside of the sound, I am very curious about the play-ability, which really seems to be passed by with these types of videos. Granted, the sound IS where the versatility is coming from, BUT...I am in an area where the music stores are very small and there just is not a large selection to pick off of the rack to demo, including these types of guitars. I am a lead player, turned into an solo acoustic performer wanting to drop leads into acoustic renditions of cover songs. Based on play-ability, which guitar performs more like an electric lead guitar? This is the first video that I found like this that brushes on it, but it was from the sound perception, and truthfully, as awesome as the guitar work was, it lacked bends, which is where I am struggling on my acoustic. Anyone with input on this would be welcome to comment with great gratitude from me. Thank you.

I had the Acoustasonic telecaster for a bit and eventually returned it due to production issues - and used my store credit for the T5z. The telecaster has great acoustic sound esp with it utilizing acoustic strings. I owned the original Acoustasonic Stratocaster (the electric guitar sized one not full acoustic sized - seen in many of my videos) - the tele gives you better acoustic sounds but when you swap to the electric for solos it just never felt connected because of the steel strings on them. I wanted to challenge myself to get more electric sounds so the T5z for its size and system was the one for me. I am only 5'5 so its perfect. The acoustic sound is a little hollow in my opinion - but everything else on the pick up is versatile enough with my GT100 / Logic Pro to create sounds you want. For looping I loved the original 10 year old Fender Acoustasonic Stratocaster for a kick drum sound by beating the strings by the bridge - which is still great on the Telecaster (and most piezo pickup guitars like the Martin Jr Ed Sheeran uses) - so I am most likely going to have the T5z + acoustic guitar combo for gigs. Like a Martin Jr again or possibly a Breedlove. I was hoping the T5z and GS Mini would be my combo but the GS Mini pickup sucks horribly for line in gigs and recording. I do with the T5z had a dedicated gig bag like the telecaster does because the gig bag is such a superior and lightweight case - the hardshell case with the T5z is bulky and not gig friendly but I can see why people would want to leave a $2000 guitar home haha. I've sold 10 acoustics to get the T5z and finally find the acoustic guitar to pair for gigging. At the end of the day for gigs most people won't be able to tell the Acoustic isn't a Full acoustic on the T5z IMHO unless you had the tele / Strat / jazzmasster with you haha.

To paraphrase, I have more guitars than I need but fewer than I want. I've have a T5z. I didn't chose it over the Fender because the Acoustasonic didn't exist when I bought the Taylor. Now I want to try one. I don't know that I would buy one right now because there are other gaps in my collection that I would like to fill first but it looks interesting. A note about the T5z. I have been playing it through a few different amps, my own and friends and I've enjoyed it really more for it's playability than the sound. It didn't sound bad, I just wasn't completely satisficed. I recently bought a AER 60/4te compact acoustic amp and all that has changed. It's a great amp and a perfect match for the guitar. The sound is unbelievable. Of course it's pricey. I have a friend who bought a less expensive Fishman acoustic amp to dedicate to his T5z and reports a similar improvement is sound and enjoyability. I suspect the same is true of the Acoustisonic. So if you're trying out either or both of these guitars, find a place with a couple different acoustic amps to use during your tryout. Most of all have fun and keep playing.

Stumbled upon this while researching the T5z. The acoustic sounds on the Acoustasonic are _so_ much better. It sounds much more like an acoustic recorded with a condenser. A nice, tight, coherent mid range focussed sound. A soon as he switches to the T5z all the mojo is gone. It's got a little more low end, but the sound is super scooped, thin and buzzy.

I use an acoustic for acoustic tones, a T5z for what it can do and an Electric for Electric tones: SG Standard, Telecaster, Stratocaster or Les Paul. It IS a freak of nature that the T5z Custom I have with 11s on it is easier to play than any of the electrics with 10s.

The cheaper $1200 Mexican Player Acoustasonics ($800 cheaper than the US made ones) are designed with a replaceable 9v battery, just like the Taylor. Just listening the T5 has a more "muted" electric sound than the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster. The Acoustasonic Jazzmaster is "brighter" and I'm an acoustic Taylor guy. In acoustic Taylors have a bright, high-note sound as opposed to most more pricey acoustics that are very "bass-y." The harder you pound them the more the bass comes out. In this electric comparison the Taylor is muted and bass-y..... a sound I do not like.

I really dig the Jazzmaster. I love the sounds, and it oozes vibe. However, I would only buy it in black, to make the humbucker less noticeable. In any other finish, it lines up with the bridge and the sound hole in a way that looks like a face, which I call "Cyclops Hitler". I can't unsee it now.

I don’t care to hear them with effects! I prefer you playing one guitar and playing the other in the same pickup position. If you’re comparing the guitars I don’t care about how they sound with your pedals , everyone already has pedals. I want to hear the differences in the guitars. It’s hard to tell with the pedals.

I think they both sound pretty good and I "get" their point. But... When I want to play an electric, I play an electric and when I want to play an acoustic, I pick up my acoustic. I think the hybrid qualities would annoy me. I think that if I was in an acoustic frame of mind, I'd be annoyed by being plugged in and having to deal with the electric qualities, and when in an electric mood I'd just pick up my Tele. I suppose the hybrid nature results in compromises that I'd find distracting.

If you're a solo performer at bars and restaurants, it's helpful to have an acoustic that can double as an electric for solos when you use a loop pedal. Or, if your playing acoustic based songs with another acoustic player, it's nice to jump into lead mode before going back to acoustic rhythm--so in those situations, this kind of guitar is clutch.

I try not to focus too much on subjective looks, but that acoustasonic just looks so bad to me. Maybe if they make a version where the front face doesnt look as cheap to me or the sound hole and pickup look more cohesive I'll get on the hype train because I do like the guitar and everything else on it looks so good.

Like a hollow or semi-hollow body electric, yes, you can play acoustically, and tune with a headstock tuner. The difference is that in having an active pickup system, like most acoustic guitars and keyboards, it should be plugged into a passive acoustic amp or an active amplifier with a line level input that does not route the signal through the amplifier's preamp section. I have a Taylor Academy 12e and a Breedlove Exotic Concert E, and both sound great using the Line setting of the Vox MIni3 G2 modeling amp, while the Ibanez Artcore semi-hollow has me stuck (so far) with the AC30 Top Boost model setting, all with a little analog delay.

T5 is analogic and Fender is a digital. This is the most important diference to me. Maybe I like fender more than Taylor cause the jazzmaster vibe, the visual and the sounds.

At a gig, I'd say the Taylor would be the winner. Not because of sound or playability, but because it _looks_ so much better than any of the Acoustasonics. If someone turned up at rehearsal with the Taylor, I'd be interested in its sounds. If they brought an Acoustasonic, they'd be told that it might be ok for rehearsals, but not for gigs.

The only thing that would make the Acoustisonic look good would be if the top looked exactly the same as the sides and back - same wood grain and color. The tops always look jarring with the way the side wood wraps around. Even the "natural" one has this problem. Too much of a clash. It would suddenly be a cool guitar if Fender did this. That white one looks like a formica top or something.
