This guitar is so inspiring to play because it isn’t really “like” anything else. It’s not a thick, chunky typical dual humbucker sound, nor is it the iconic twangy/bell-like sound. All of those lead me down well-trodden pathways in my playing. This guitar is almost like a palate cleanser from those sounds that tempt me to play my same old noodly Les-pauly or Tele-ish licks, and I make more actual MUSIC.

If you put 11s stock on a guitar you have to route the nut for 11s strings. If you pass from 9s to 11s you ca always enlarge de slots, from 11s to 9s you have to change nut. Beside not every one can fisically bend or enjoy an 11s gauged string set but almost every one can enjoy a guitar with 9s. So is a better choiche to put smallesr strings in a guitar that you have to sell in a store. Good video man!!

Your point about the strings is a good one - it's definitely partly the 'showroom' aspect so the guitars feel good instantly as it will make the instrument feel 'slicker' and people are way less sensitive to having too light a string set vs too heavy (light is only inconvenient, whereas heavy with its extra tension would make it feel difficult to play for some people who aren't used to that), but I wonder too if maybe it's partly shipping/transit issues (ie less tension on necks, etc leads to less sensitivity to heat changes and also fewer incidents of damage). Everybody has their preferences though, and certainly on humbuckers Ive often found 10s seem to sound a bit better.
@davidburke21324 жыл бұрын
To be fair for some people lighter strings than they’re used to can be equally difficult. This is most usually felt in the sense of pushing chords etc. slightly out of tune but whether you actually notice this or not depends on how good your ears are, and I suspect that from what I’ve heard of people demoing guitars in stores lots of guitarists aren’t as sensitive as they should be to being out of tune! 😜

I much prefer your Les Paul style guitar because it's a thicker sound and it has more umphh to it, if you know what i mean. Altough I can see why someone go for the tele. When it comes to string gauges, and preference, you like what you like and there is no wrong, but I’ve come to really enjoy some light .08-.38 or .40. strings. I found there is a cutting quality to the sound. And I’m not squeezing the heck out of my neck as much. Also, that’s a handsome guitar, even if I’m not totally in love with the blue into black, but imagine if the headstock matched the body.

Excellent review my friend, I agree on the strings to a certain point. I personally love 10's but on a couple of guitars, the other 3 guitars sound and feel amazing with 9's. And when playing them, you of course have to have a lighter touch/approach... I tried stringing them up with 10's, but they simply didn't sound as well and the feel was strange. So, I FINALLY gave in and accepted to playing 9's & 10's. It seems that every guitar is just a world, I only have five, which is more than enough for me, but they are sooo different from each other. In 1979, I bought a USA Fender telecaster in black with maple neck and loved it, with single pickups. The one you review with humbuckers and big headstock seems like a dream :-)

I thought they were Wide Range humbuckers but they look smaller. The vintage wide range humbuckers are actually closser to "P90 humbuckers" with magnet rods and wide bobins, but the modern Wide Range are actually humbucker in disguise, a traditional humbucker construction with an alnico magnet underneath and standard size bobins (because I had a 72's classic reissue before).
@OzziePete14 жыл бұрын
OK in recent past, the name "Wide Range Humbucker" has been given to any Fender humbucker that has the split design polepieces. The original Wide Range Humbuckers of the 1970s were very different to the humbuckers we know today. Their pole pieces were the actual magnet and because the magnets had to be machined with a thread to screw into position, Seth Lover had to use a harder magnetic material : CuNiFe instead of Alnico. Fender also used full sized bobbins x 2 instead of smaller sized bobbins like Gibson used. That created a larger pickup and Fender used 4 mounting screws instead of 2. All these changes made a different sounding pickup response. Following CBS' sale of Fender to the Schultz syndicate, the Wide Range Humbucker had stopped being made by Fender. When demand called for a 70s type sound, Fender instead used an OEM pickup they bought bulk. It was essentially a stock design humbucker made with a split polepiece design. These "wide range" pickups were closer sounding to Gibson humbuckers and the same size as them. Only difference was the 3 screws mounting the pickup instead of Gibson's 2. Only just this past year has Fender actually got around to sourcing a bulk supply of CuNiFe and redoing the Wide Range Humbucker properly, and of course, they are the bigger size again. These can be found on the Fender 70s Original guitars & priced accordingly. These American Pro II guitars use the humbucker standard-sized split polepiece design. They also employ other modern aspects of Fender guitar design too. If you want the CuNiFe Wide Range humbuckers buy a 70s Original instead.
@rolanddeschain21204 жыл бұрын
The magnets for WR pickups are CuNiFe pole magnets and the sourcing became too rare and expensive which ended production. Fender has now sourced material and you can buy them for 199.99 right now. The pickups in this guitar are Tim Shaw double tap humbuckers. They are the same as pretty much all "boutique" pickups where it is just aesthetics outside, bar magnet humbucker inside, like the '72 reissue you mention.
@sunlesseffects4 жыл бұрын

They are fantastic guitars. Very unique sounding, but yet retains that classic fender sound that they've become known for. When I bought it I thought it would be kind of a hybrid between a classic telecaster and a Les Paul but it is not that at all. It does its own thing and it doesn't extremely well. Fyi, if you own one of these do not leave it in a hot car. The pickups have wax potting between the metal and the pickups themselves and if it melts you'll get a nasty horrible feedback.

Tele is less muddy than the les paul...interesting overtones on the tele too.

If someone who prefers to play a thicker string purchases a guitar with a lighter gauge then the person could still play it but a person that plays lighter strings cant play a guitar with a heavy gauge strings.
@LivingroomGearDemos4 жыл бұрын
hmmm, how? You could always change from heavy to lighter gauge as well?

@@LivingroomGearDemos I should have clarified, say in a store for example. Everyone can play 9s but not everyone can play 11s.
@davidburke21324 жыл бұрын
@@spudvader not necessarily. I’m much more sensitive to playing electric guitars with lighter strings than I’m used to than playing ones with heavier gauge than I’m used to. Every player is different and their sensitivities to these kind of changes vary too. You may or may not be right that more people struggle with heavier gauges than with lighter gauges but it’s far from a universal truth.

@@davidburke2132 Have u tried to play a set or 11s in standard tuning? Its hard to bend those if you are a 9s player. Going from heavy to light gauge, you have to be more precise and delicate but going from light to heavy, it's the hand strength that you dont have because you are use to light strings.
@davidburke21324 жыл бұрын
@@spudvader yes I have. Been playing guitar for 25 years. I’ve tried most things, within reason. I was just pointing out that your personal experience regarding string gauges, or even the majority experience regarding string gauges, is not the universal experience regarding string gauges. 🤷🏼♂️

companies sell guitars w/thin strings because those strings are cheaper than heavier gauge strings.

It is October 2020. About 3 years ago, I purchased a guitar a whole lot like this but without the coil tapping. The reason I got it was it would replace 2 instruments I had in my collection at the time, a Fender Thinline Tele and an Epiphone Les Paul. Ultimately didn't do what I wanted it to, and I eventually gave it back to the man who built it.
