Fender American Tele Comparison - Pro II vs Ultra vs Vintage II

I bought the Vintage II. It took me awhile to get used to the 7 1/4 radius, but now i really like it. The neck feels like 1/2 of a baseball bat handle and is real comfortable. Mine has a mahogany body so it is real mellow-sounding, which is what i wanted.

I’d like the Ultra body, with the Pro II neck and the Vintage II bridge, tuners, pickups and electronics(!)

That would be a great guitar! Would have to go Custom Shop for that one though! Which is well worth it if you have the budget! PM

I picked the Pro based on specs - playability matters more than small differences in tone that can be eq'd out - vintage was a non-starter, 7.25 radius would be a deal-breaker on its own - the ultra was tempting but the taller frets on the pro were what eventually made me go for that one. Could no be happier - I have Tom Andersons, Suhrs, Core PRS and Gibson custom shop guitars and the pro holds up against them all.

Just got a Pro II and love it! I wanted an Ultra (I have an Ultra Strat and love it) But wanted a more vintage tone! So far I love it!

Nice video. And yes all three of these are great options depending on your taste. I've had several telecasters...squire affinity, squire 50's classic vibe, fender American performer, American professional II, and an ultra. All three of my American teles were perfect...I really didn't notice much difference at all between my performer and my pro II other than a slight difference in pickup tone. I actually preferred the performer... the pickups fit my playing style more for some reason...but both were exceptional guitars. I then bought an ultra... and in my mind the Ulta is in a different league. I noticed that I lost a bit of the magic sparkle in the neck pickup from my others but gained much more everywhere else... especially when in overdrive the Ulta sounds hands down better. In a blind test I'm not sure you could tell the difference between the pickup tone between the noiseless and non-noiseless... except that the noiseless gets rid of unwanted feedback. I played mine regularly against my other American telecasters and my fender American professional strat and the noiseless pickups sounded just as good in every way... so at the end of the day I sold my other telecaster old style canoe paddles and kept the Ulta... I didn't miss the others at all... the Ulta again is a sleek, beautiful machine...on a whole new, higher level. But you get the same old school mentality with Gibson where the purists want to think the first guitar made in the 50's is better than 70 plus years of innovation. All sound great though...if focused purely on tone... but tone isn't the only thing to consider...

I bought a new Pro II the other day and I'm in love with it. That said, I love the American Vintage and the colors and some of the features of the Ultra, so this was a good video to get an idea of their differences. Thanks!

I bought the Pro II today and love it. I was considering the Ultra as I have a Strat Ultra, but prefered the neck on the Pro and got it on special $1200 cheaper than the Ultra. Thanks for the video comparison.

Glad you liked it! Its a tough one. Both are great! I guess if you want as close to vintage as possible go for the VII if you want Fenders most up to date version of the classic Tele thing, with the modern tweaks, go Pro II. The Pro II is arguably more 'perfect' the VII is more vibey and closer to the Custom Shop thing. PM

To me the Pro II has the fattest sound of all of them! Love the Vintage II but it sounds thin compared to the others. Great video guys.

I bought the Ultra. Same as the one here except with a Maple fretboard. Incredible guitar. It's so playable and sounds very good. The S1 switch is actually a big hit and puts it ahead

I have the vintage 2 (bought first) and the Ultra (both maple necks). I prefer the vintage 2 for looks, feel, smell (nitro) sound and case, but the ultra is more playable. The pro 2 is great but now with these two theres no point. I do think that for most of people the pro would be better than vintage and ultra. If its a Tele, I want it regardless!!

Unfortunately the American Vintage ii does not have a vintage finish. It's plasticized "nitro" sprayed over a very thick polyurethane finish.

The 63 sounds the best. At least in a classic sense. I grew up playing a 83 Tele. The others sounded a little muffed to me

The Only way to do it is via the custom shop. We have ordered 63 teles and strats with necks more akin to a Am Pro before and they always work well! The satin style finish is something we often custom order.

I'm a Fender guy looking at a telecaster, I thought I would get a professional 2 telecaster.....then I checked out a G&L Fullerton ASAT CLASSIC and I'm saying goodbye to Fender ‼️ The G&L is a much better built guitar than fender for the money and with MFD , its a telecaster on steroids ‼️👍
